Yeah I found the direct karmic rewards from teh tree to be such an interesting concept that this story could almost do no wrong with me. the idea that he gets direct rewards for doing good was so unique. it was precisely because of this that the attempted rape scene was so disturbing to me. Yeah, @youseiki, I think it is very interesting that anime/manga can be so different from what I have experienced in LN. I tend to think it is a difference in target audiences or perhaps an appreciation of a different form. furthermore, it could merely be the fact that people that translate japanese stuff like certain types of stories/mcs while people who translate chinese stuff may like a different type of story/mc. speaking of which, Sword of the Immortal came out in theater this week.

Third there's a lot of variety in Mangas, especially Shoujo mangas that even the boys read, now I don't think majority of Shoujo Mangas has Dense Male Characters, mostly they are alpha and too much alpha. Seinen, Adult and Mature mangas has a lot to offer. Anime and Hentai has a lot of history, but all in all, they adapt a lot of quality stories like Mahoutsukai no Yome. Light Novels are mostly straight wish fulfillment, but since we're talking about Light Novels, they are bound to be relaxing than having heavy plotted novels... that's they are called light. Now Web Novels, these are written by aspiring Light Novel Authors, or hobbyist. Their Creativity surpasses the Light Novelist, but at the same time, they copy a lot of elements. In these Various Forms of entertainment, "Slice of Life" is what they are looking for since most of their people are overworked. In conclusion, Japan has already a lot of stories to cater those people who prefers alpha protagonist, while some people uses dense protagonist to drag it and milk it. Well, dense Protagonist like Neon Genesis Evangelion is a big example of dense protagonist sells a lot.
