Recommendations MC with greatly exagerated reputation

I'm looking for something similar to Mx0, where the MC has a reputation as an unbeatable badass while actually being relatively wimpy. MC doesn't have to stay a wimp, but it would be best if their actual abilities never caught up to their reputation.

Please no harem, horror or excessive gore.
Comedy preferred.
Female protagonist preferred, but I understand how unlikely it is to exist.
RRL (or similar) is fine, but please no series whose authors don't understand, or don't care about, grammar and/or spelling.
Edit: Please no licensed series either. I don't really have a legal way of obtaining them at the moment and I dislike stealing. I can justify it to myself with unlicensed works since the creator isn't willing to sell in my country anyway, but not otherwise.

 

World of Cultivation. While our MC seems like he's an unprecedented Genius, he has many, many problems. First and foremost, his ability with all of his skills is wide and scattered, jack of all trades but Master of none. He also has a weakness for money, but loves his own life the most. He's more willing to back out to avoid dying than anything else; bad in a Xuanhuan world where everyone is a battle maniac.

The worst part is that his sect understands most of his personality. Using stuff like "if you don't win, your master-uncle will punish you" is enough to scare him to submission. They also understand he's in love with money, but they're too poor to go down that route.

Add in a sadistic demon that's kinda helping him and you got a pretty funny Xuanhuan.

World of Cultivation is the best.

ANGEL DENSETSU
otherwise, I don't know about a novel like that.

 

If you don't mind manga recommendations, read Angel Densetsu if you haven't read it.

 

And that one reminds me of "Transfer Student Storm Bringer."

I guess Japanese series are the only ones with kinda wimpy characters.

I almost got all the characteristics.. Zero no Tsukiyama

There is one more that seems to match your specs to a great degree [But Male MC, with haremish elements though there is no real harem] - Chrome shelled Regios

Another one with male protagonist and limited harem is Mushoku Tensei

 

Conquest might fit the bill.

 

Whew.. Mx0 is probably one of the few manga i am literally cursing at the publishers for ending such a good story.

Not a novel, but there's an awesome hilarious webcomic called "transfer student storm bringer". It's probably one of the funniest comics I've ever seen, right next to one punch man.

Yeah, but after the author bent the whole story out of shape in a desperate attempt to turn it into a generic shounen, it was pretty much expected. Still sad though.

If you are fine with English Novel, try "Lies of Locke Lamora" by Scott Lynch.

It is a fantasy novel comprised of magic and underworld empire mixed with Ocean Eleven-ish plot.

Summary: The Thorn of Camorr is said to be an unbeatable swordsman, a master thief, friend to the poor, a ghost that walks through walls.

Slightly built and barely competent with a sword, Locke Lamora is, much to his annoyance, the fabled Thorn. I'm mainly looking for series that I can find legally for free on the internet. My local book acquisition options are inadequate far more often than not, I don't really have the patience for Amazon and I'm honestly too poor at the moment to buy anything anyway. Thank you for replying though

 

It kind of flip flops. At times he is under estimated, but at the same time here and there its reverse. Not to the same degree as mx0 and such.
