Any of those, as long as there's a decent plot behind it.

i've tried watching both Macross and Gundam before but... it just wasnt able to catch my interest. Dont know why though. :hmm:

Try a Giant Robo. You will like the intelligent plot.;) Be warned, it starts cheesy looking. But in the end, it’s a tale worth watching. I like how the death among the Experts of Justice are poignant...

Some of the Gundam series may appeal to you! Try some of the OVA series for a start to get a feel for the franchise. I suggest Gundam Thunderbolt (most recent entry that is rather representative for the franchise's core themes).

Kakumeiki Valvrave is a tragedy. What about Fafner Exodus and Cross Ange?

Cross Ange would usually be my thing (you know, with all the yuri) but it's basically tragedy porn. Tons of uber-drama shitting on the protag and her comrades along with, i believe, some rape and sexual assault tossed in for good measure.

It's not actually tragedy and it's not yuri. Did you ever watch it till the end?
I agree on the porn part, though.

Might wanna try Iron Blooded Orphan, but only the first season (first season has decent mix of tragedy and good story)... the second one simply jumped the shark...

I am also looking for a mecha anime series. Here's what I know:
    1. I watched it when I was a kid, so it's 80's or earlier
    2. To get into the mecha suits, the guys would slide in pods down from the base to the suit. The track was a square tube?
    3. It would often end with a huge explosion that was very simply drawn like something between a volcano and a giant laser shooting upward.
    4. I had it on VHS and the background of the cover was akin to an olive green with hexagonal mesh over it.

I know that's not a lot to go on, but someone might have some ideas!?

I also love that to sign up for this forum, I had to tick the box 'I am not a robot'

    Ironic!

Not quite sure TBH, but if it's more than 1 pilot for 1 robot/mecha, then probably 1 of these:
    Combatler V
    Voltes V
    Getter Robo
    Golion
    Dairugger XV
    God Sigma
    Goshogun
    Dancouga
