We are born as a blank sheet. We have no memories, but as we grow up our personality forms and the brain collects and stores memories. They are saved in a part of our brain called hippocampus. If your brain is damaged you can loose your memories and even your whole personality can change to a very noticeable degree. It can be literal physical damage like in the case of Phineas Gage or it could be due to an illness like Alzheimer or simply due to old age. Sometimes the brain alters or deletes memories by himself. Without certain influences (memories), you could be another person. Of course there are also other factors, that can determine your personality, such as hormones etc., but memories are a very huge part of who you are and consequently you need a storage, that saves the memories, to make it even possible to form a personality. If your brain is dead, your storage and memories are gone. Let's assume something like a soul/ghost really exists and you are dead. Your storage and your memories are gone and you are already only an empty (shell) soul. Why is there a need to drink a soup of forgetfulness?
If memory dies at death, then there would be no malicious/vengeful ghosts ?? Cos the ghost already forgot their grievances so there's no need for vengeance since it's supposed to be deleted and thus as if never existed...

You could compare it to, eh, computer data. My computer keeps a backup of all the data on it, so if my computer dies that data can normally be retrieved and uploaded to a new working computer, and bam! It's almost exactly the same as the first computer! You can think of the soul as the backup data. But humans aren't computers, and newly created humans don't have the mental capacity to store/process all the data they could in their past life, so a reincarnated soul needs nearly all the data removed or it will probably be dead before birth in the new life because the brain automatically tries to do things it just can't do, at a basic level like trying to make a fetus's heart beat the same way as an adult's.
