Mods making exceptions to rules

    (from general novel rules) - Other Rules:
    • No Spamming and/or Hijacking
      • Spamming is any irrelevant/unhelpful post
        • Irrelevant posts will be deleted and warning points will be given, in increasing amounts for each post deleted.

    (from looking for novel rules) - Unhelpful responses will result a warning and getting your post deleted.
    • e.g. posting only "I don't know" or "Why?"
    • Trolling


    Now I'd rather have made something more like a whiny complaint status or replied to the actual thread related to this specific case, but a) status word limit and b) I'd be doing another off topic post in a thread just cleansed from off topics with a complaint about mods not completely removing all off topic posts... yeah that would be pretty ironic...

    Ok so in the thread Lightning Power MC this post was made following which the purge happened (Which I've got no problem with, it was made rightfully so. Honestly it's incredibly annoying when you're looking for help but you get nonsensical replies instead that sometimes even spiral out of control.)

    @Parth37955 , @remy911 and @Shio Ok so after this I had my post removed, and that's fine, I've got no qualms since it was off topic and I was breaking the rules.

    (I didn't get any warning, but I can see how that could be difficult to with all the repeated "offenses" spread across the entire NUF population. That said a short "thread has been cleaned" post with related user links or something would've have been good)

    Anyway, the actual problem related to my title that I'm trying to bring up here is that the post I replied to wasn't removed, which wasn't following these same rules either. (And for the record mods making exceptions isn't the first time tbh, and sometimes they're right in making them, but imo often times not.)

    Now I don't have anything against Skoll and you can argue that it was indeed a helpful post. (Either way I think most can agree that at least it's intended purpose was to be helpful, which is probably why it was left off the hook to begin with by the way.) But if my post (as well as other's) were removed because the looking for novel section already has the equivalent of the "serious" tag attached to it inherently, then said post is both off topic and also is not helpful, thus it shouldn't have been an exception to the enforced rule, it should have been removed along with the rest.

    I'll be honest, I probably wouldn't have bothered if it wasn't because I got a bit upset to a lesser extent, partially because it's happened a couple of times by now that some posts receive favouritism. But I don't think that I'm wrong in saying that if rules are to be enforced and followed then you shouldn't just decide on whether or not today is a "follow the rules day" depending on your mood, if you thought the post was funny or not, you like the user who wrote the post, you agree with what they're saying, and most other reasons you could possibly have to make this exception.

    p.s. By the way I could've sworn that I'd read that double posting wasn't allowed, or maybe it's just that every other forum does not allow it...

    Double posting isn't allowed iirc. I'm pretty sure I've seen the mods doing it too.
    Mods are allowed to do whatever they want, nothing we can do really.

    Havent seen any favoritism though. Maybe they just see the post before you as unescesary for removal.. And double posting isnt unallowed.. as long as it doesnt reach the spam level. Or so I think

    My bad, meant to write off-topic while deleting when I accidently hit enter.
    tbh I was mostly skimming, but I usually only take stuff that is purposely off-topic and keep the stuff that tells other people off. now that I see he included something about grammar, I'm going to go delete it.
    *shrugs* I tend to be more of mood-based mod. Others mods, like @Shio and @remy911 are more responsible

    no one gets warnings if they are new or if it's not common. if you keep doing it, then maybe a few points but nothing much. We just tend to quietly merge posts.

    the bans arent perma ban I think.. it just lift itself once it is off cooldown.

    only if they're spam bots and spreading porn around.

    You mean with all his "Boku no Pico" suggestions? xD

    I do think people should be allowed to troll slightly (provided they do make a serious suggestion too)

    Not for calling out names but the other day what's he called from xianxia world? Second something? Anyway, 3 posts in the same thread replying to other people uninterrupted and if you looked in the recent activity all three posts were in succession even when counting all the activity across the entire forum.

    And while this is the example I can think off the top of my head this honestly isn't that rare of a case. (And btw people who have the enormous gifs as signatures that take up 500% as much space as their actual post double posting is...)

    I think and hope not, it says right there "only" spam bots.

    to be honest, I'm tired of those and the euphoria ones. like, for read, just tired of the whole thing.

    read the post.
    it's not like mods police every thread. as for the gifs, we have a rule yes, but first we have to see it to tell them to take it off. PEOPLE, THERE IS A REPORT BUTTON FOR A REASON, USE IT!

    I thought he was a mod incognito, since the amount of times I've seen him seriously post can be counted on my hand, yet he's allowed to keep doing it.

    In that case, please report them. it would be much appreciated. Same with signature. There's two or more user that has got warning for them, but some might slipped. I have the tendency to merge all double post that I encounter, unless the text is really long.
    Sorry that it might be seen as favouritism, but I tend to only check one or two sub-forum & latest post. A lot of post might escape from observation.

    Believe me, the list of wp given to him is pretty long :p.
    And nope, not a mod.

    The trick as to why "certain trolls" still aren't banned yet is because they usually haven't done anything too malicious within a short period. And people don't seem to really care about reporting them.

    Bans are considered pretty serious and so there has to be a justification for them. A few troll posts aren't going to get someone banned and I'm not going to go out of my way to look for posts to justify a ban. Now, if this person had tons of reports on them, it'd be another story...

    Use the report button, if you want a mod to 100% look at a problem. And please be specific about what's the problem.

    I think something perhaps on the mod end we should be doing is sending notifications when a report is rejected perhaps? I would need to test if and how that function works.

    I'm mood based too. Though I'd like to think I'm pretty consistent when giving out "punishment."

    My modding styles works based on how annoyed I am by the offense and how serious, combined with how much of a "disturbance" the post is making. For sections like the "I'm Looking For," I tend to enforce the "helpfulness" rule by how much effort and participation OP puts into their thread.

    The reality is, the amount of low quality posts have jumped and I'm just being more selective on where I'm putting my efforts. If no one gives a shit, I won't either. But here are things that always get "modded" when I see them:
    • Long or annoying signatures
    • consecutive posts, repeatedly (a double post here and there depends on my annoyance level as it's not technically against the rules)
    • sexism, racism, etc.
    • malicious comments directed at other users, even if just "joking"
    There are so many times I want to argue with someone or be just plain mean, but I can't because I'm a mod. T_T

    EDIT:
    P.S. Just because a mod posts in the thread, don't assume they "approve" of what's going on. I don't always read every post.

    TIL mods are actually also human beings.

    And really, people who blatantly derail actually decent threads and then claim it's ok because there is no 'serious' tag should be given WP. It's pretty easy to tell which threads have direction and which threads don't.
