Mussel hair

So Ai-chan ate mussel just now and Ai-chan noticed these black pubic hair-like hair attached to the mussel's meat.

Is this something like a contamination, a mutation or a parasite? Or is it really pubic hair? It's like when you go down on a girl and a bunch of hair got stuck to your teeth.

If this is really mussel pubic hair, is this a gender thing? Like boys have hair and girls don't? Because Ai-chan noticed that some mussels don't have hair while some do inside the same batch.

Additionally, is it safe to eat this hair?

Not quite. It doesn't extend out of the shell, just a tiny tuff of black hair between the meat attached to the meat. Ai-chan can pull it out, but it also pulled out some of its guts.

 

Some of my family eat that mussel "hair" but I don't. I feel that its not safe to eat

 

Most mussels usually come debearded but occasionally some slip through. Try gently cutting it off with a knife or pull it with your hands

Or are you talking about the belly of the mussels?

 

It's not hair, but more like algae or some plant stuff that those mussels eat and it's still not completely digested. That's the reason you can pull out their innards lol

Yeah, it's between the flap. Not outside the flap. If you push aside the flap, you get to the innard, the hair is in the innards.

 

don't think i can look at mussels with the same eyes after reading this..

 

no worries, thats safe to eat. it doesnt really add anything to your body but its safe to eat... unless theres some creepy stuff stuck to it :y
