I am a newbie here and i want to try my skills in translating novels from English to Tagalog. How and where am i going to start? Seeking for some helpful advice. Thank you.
Most original English novels are under some pretty strict copyrights, so I'd suggest being really careful with what you translate. You can take some public domain novels (like H.P. Lovecraft's works or Lewis Carroll's works or the Brothers Grimm) and consider translation of those
I don't really know, but it would be good to have a cat tools that provide a powerful tokenizer for your language pairs that you are going to translate. Then look for dictionary and thesaurus for the language you are translate in to. After that, for beginners, look for a professional translation memory from http://translated.org/ with fuzzy string match those professional example can give you some references how the word is translated by other translator. Lastly get a machine translator, it help when you really got mental blocked. Knowing the meaning but just can't think of a right words. You might want to join a well established groups and ask them teach you, or just hire a freelance professional and ask them teah you their basic workflow. Easiest way would be joing the Alta or some other world wellknown translation groups. Or go to translation workshops like this one.
Depends on what you are translating. But as said by the other NUF guys, ask permission first from the English translator. And try not to make dough with it. Or you'll be in deep shit if the author finds out. Well philippines doesnt really have internet laws so no worries.
Ask permission from the English translator? Chances are, people will never know you’re not translating from Chinese to Tagalog unless you tell them otherwise.
Well, it's still a question of ethic and manners regardless, but as the translators themselves don't really ask for permission from original author to translate, screw ethics and manners!
