I couldn't believe when i see Notre Dame legacy wood construction to be not as taken care of as well as the Japanese old temples which was less grand than itself. Turned out it seems the building and it's caretakers are living off donations. Little care were paid to the building by the french government until last year when money allocated to repair it's spire.

It's a church. Why should the country pay for the care taking of a religious organization? Most countries of the world separate church and state for a reason.

It's more taking care of a cultural and historical building then it would be anything with religion

As long as it belongs to the church, then it's still not property of the country. In which case any government that's not an idiot isn't going to start handing out hundreds of millions to take care of old buildings that don't belong to them. Since once they do that every religion is going to start asking for larger handouts than most already ask for.

If that were the case then almost no cultural building would get taken care of unless they belonged to the state. And most do not. No everything is about religion when it comes to the churches, hell some churches dont even belong to the religious group that meets there

Churches built before 16th or the 17th century (don't remember which one) are owned by the State and not by the Vatican.
As Notre Dame's construction ended during the 14th century, it's owned by the French government.

True, but you're forgetting european history at this point. There was a time when the catholic church literally ordered the life and death of everyone around. No one today is going to ever give them a chance to revive the ability of power over them. Once you start handing them large sums for one thing, it will let them worm their way into things again. It's better to brush them off to the side, ignore them as much as possible and hope they do what all religions do when enough time passes. Just fade away and be forgotten or replaced by something new that's easier to control. That's more or less how history has shown religion in general.

It's based on the French political culture, there's a policy that says that all religious buildings should be funded by its faithful and the government should no longer be in charge of paying for the places of workship (since France wants to welcome all religions and do not favouritise one religion over another).

The Cathedral of Notre Dame is an important monument of the French History, but it is run as a church, not a museum. So, it does not wonder the government never took care of it, the ministry of culture tried to push the upkeep of the church to the Christian authority in France.

It's wholly owned by the french? Or owned by them but still ran by the church which just makes them responsible for it but influence doesn't lie in their hands?

The cathedral is owned by the French state, but under law, the government must remain neutral in matters of religion and as such the Roman Catholic church is the sole and exclusive beneficiary, with rights in perpetuity to use the building and its grounds for religious practices. The caveat is that the church must be made open, for free, for visitors and expenses related to the use of the church, such as security and cleaning is paid by the Archdiocese of Paris.

because of the age [and history] the building is actually owned by the French Government which they allow the religious institution to use the building. Furthermore since the government owns the building the cathedral isn't insured, so any damage is payed by the state and not a company

I'm a french, the reason why we are paying for Notre Dame is because it's an historical monument, and the most visited monument in Europe. Yes it is used by the catholic church, but the state use it too, for example to bury presidents or former presidents.

For the lack of money for the care of historical monuments in France, you can thanks the EU policies for that, it forces governments to cut budgets in a lot of areas, and then give this money back to the rich and big corporations.

    Well it doesn’t matter now.
The Notre Dame Cathedral is receiving 100millions in donations right now. The Churches rebuilding is a matter of time.

And the government shouldn’t have been responsible for the upkeep of it. The French Monarchy is a stain that is forever tied to most French citizens. The French Revolution was one of the bloodiest wars in history, and seeing as how the church has had such close ties to the monarchy, it is perfectly acceptable for the French government to maintain its view as entirely neutral. If they started favoring the churches, a possible monarchy could happen or maybe even a reminder of the dark times. It’s amazing churches survived during that time as well.

Actually, it functionally extends to most churches built before the 1905 separation of church and state. Of course, the funding is horrible so upkeep is questionable.

While technically true, the 1905 law actually de facto favors the traditional triad (Catholicism, Protestantism and Judaism) over more recent religions in french culture. At least, that's what seems to be the case when i look up the 1905 law.

According to looking up on things, it's self-insured by the state itself but there is an exception to that. If it is found that the contractors doing the restoration are found to be at fault, then the insurer that covers the contractors will be liable.

It always boggles the mind how Euro governments actually agreed to the ridiculous monstrosity that is the EU. Did all the leaders at the time have a gigantic collective brainfart?

EU helps a lot but over all, it is the biggest fraud in democracy.

They easily destroyed fair use, internet freedom of expression & internet rights for the profit of billion dollar media companies, 1,400 artists & directors that promoted & supported article 13. Those politicians acted like they were clueless about the internet but they surely were not clueless about politics or the interest of the people... they used stupidity to trick people. Are they that stupid that they will risk their career as politicians by destroying freedom, fair use & copyright on the internet? If not, why would humans sacrifice a career or future for something?
The EU is about trade & trade is about billion dollar companies... that law is for the greedy rich celebrities & media companies, for the every little profit. The same is with the so called fuel regulations on cars... they want to ban cars older than 10 years as an excuse about polutions but the average person would not afford newer cars, this will force many to buy newer cars, thus the demand for newer cars will rise & the prices of newer cars will go up, it will create a gate or wealth gate where the average person would barely able to survive if they have a car. Pure corruption... I bet most of them are bribed by billion dollar companies.

It's not as extreme as we're making it.
This cathedral receive millions upon of millions of visitors and tourists every year.
You're telling me the French government don't make enough money for renewal!?

I’m French, atheist (though Jewish by birth) and totally allergic to religion (please, do not take it to heart, I can understand believers but personal experiences made me at odd with religion in general) but Notre-Dame is still very important to me. It is not only about the church but for us French people, it’s part of our cultural identity. It’s even older than the Eiffel Tower and it kinda represents our country, so not much to do with religion
