Hey, everyone! I'm looking for novels that involve ancient Chinese myths and figures. I like novels that mention mythological characters such as Houyi, Nuwa, Laozi, etc. If there was such as thing as a modern remake of 'Journey to the West,' that would essentially be it.

    Here are some examples:
    The Spiritual Attainment of Minghe
    The Magus Era
    Desolate Era
    Rise of Humanity
*Edit: I prefer a historical setting.

Not quite sure since I only read a few early chapters, but maybe Red Packet Server?

I guess that technically works, although the setting is modern.

If you can read Chinese, the genre with mythological beings most prevalent in them is traditional/old-school xianxia. It's not a popularly translated genre. If you read "female-oriented" xianxia, I reckon you might find some that are translated. Having said that, if the cultivation tag is meant to be the equivalent of modern xianxia/xuanhuan, you'll unlikely find a traditional xianxia style series with that sort of cultivation.

Journey to the West belongs in the "mythical" genre (a.k.a gods and demons). You're going to have to read something old, like "Investiture of the Gods," because they're hardly written anymore, let alone translated.

    Unfortunately, I can't read Chinese...
Also, the cultivation tag is mainly there so that I know that there is power growth. It can be any type of cultivation: Celestial, Daoist, Buddhist, body-refining, Demonic, etc.

I haven't read it either, but the part of the title that says "Genes" implies a futuristic/Sci-Fi setting. I'll take a look at it anyways. Thanks.

I usually dislike novels with Chinese mythological characters but Everlasting Immortal Firmament, Immortal and Above the skies are some rare exception.

Not sure if it's to your liking but try Heavenly Curse , a nice cultivation novel in the 19th century with many references to taoism and budhism
