There is one small problem with that line of thinking however.... we would need a hammer

    Planning on buying:
    • 16 oz Hammer - $2.88 (Walmart)
    • 26" Hand Saw (Stanley) - $6.96 (Walmart)
    • 5-Tine Manure Pitchfork - $29.69 (Midland Hardware)
    • 5 lbs 10d galvanized nails (3" length, quantity: 371 nails) - $12.96 (Home Depot)
    • Total: $52.49
So the simplest possible composter design I found was this one: https://learn.eartheasy.com/guides/how-to-build-a-compost-bin/
    • Using the cheapest possible untreated lumber (pine):
      • (8) 2 x 6 x 3' lumber = (2) 2 x 6 x 12' lumber = $7.56/each (Ghent Wood Products, Rough Cut Pine)
      • (4) 2 x 2 x 3' lumber = (1) 2 x 2 x 12' lumber = $2.92/each (Home Depot, #2 Common SPF)
      • Total: $18.04 (+32 nails)
    • Using the recommended untreated wood (cedar), which doesn't rot
      • (8) 2 x 6 x 3' lumber = (2) 2 x 6 x 12' lumber = $22.20/each (Mill Outlet Lumber, Rough Cut Cedar)
      • (4) 2 x 2 x 3' lumber = (1) 2 x 2 x 12' lumber = $10.20/each (Mill Outlet Lumber, Alaskan Yellow Cedar Smooth)
      • Total: $54.60 (+32 nails)
    • A typical composting unit contains 3 bins, so multiply both of these by 3 to get an approximate price per unit.
This is a more advanced composter design: https://www.rodalesorganiclife.com/garden/how-to-build-compost-bin
    • (7) 1 x 6 x 12' lumber - $11.40/each (Mill Outlet Lumber, Appearance Grade Knotty Cedar)
    • (9) 1 x 6 x 10' lumber - $9.50/each (Mill Outlet Lumber, Appearance Grade Knotty Cedar)
    • (2) 1 x 2 x 10' lumber - $2.00/each (Mill Outlet Lumber, Appearance Grade Knotty Cedar)
    • (2) 2 x 6 x 10' lumber - $18.50/each (Mill Outlet Lumber, Rougher Header Cedar-Appearance Select Knotty)
    • (2) 2 x 6 x 12' lumber - $22.20/each (Mill Outlet Lumber, Rougher Header Cedar-Appearance Select Knotty)
    • (2) 2 x 4 x 12' lumber - $14.40/each (Mill Outlet Lumber, Rougher Header Cedar-Appearance Select Knotty)
    • (1) 50' x 3' chicken wire - $12.99 (TrueValue)
    • (4) 4' metal fence post - $2.94/each (Lowes, Blue Hawk 14-guage)
    • Also requires 2" and 2.5" wood screws, staple gun and staples (not included)
    • Total: $304.25 (3-bin composter, ~$100 per bin), plus screws and staples
Each one of these bins can hold 1 cubic yard, so 3 bins = 3 cubic yards = 606 gallons

In comparison, a plastic composter you can buy online is usually around $100 / 50 gallons

    -----------------------------------

So I googled online, and on average people generate about 1 lb of compost-able waste per day (e.g. food trash), and 1 cubic foot = 30 lbs.

    Therefore, 1 bin = 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet = 810 lbs of trash

As for weeds... let's say that one plot makes 0.1 lbs (1.6 oz) of weeds per day. Therefore, in one week, it's about 0.7 lbs of weeds.

    In short:
    • Every person can add 1 lb of trash (food waste) to the composter ONCE per day
    • Every time you weed, calculate the number of days since the plot was last weeded. Multiply that number by 0.1 and that is the lbs of weeds you can add to the composter.

    -----------------------

I changed some of the minor mechanics of the game on the first post. Things I've added:
    • You don't have to water crops if it rains (check the weather!)
    • Crop HP (percentage yield) and soil quality is shown on the list
    • Composting system (add your food trash to the composter every day to make compost)
      • You can put weeds into the composter too (they grow at a constant rate per day)
    • Soil Quality (Good/Fair/Poor) system
      • Soil quality is either "good", "fair", or "poor". Freshly cleared land starts at "good" quality
      • Soil quality declines one level after growing crops on it for 4 months
      • There is a penalty to the harvest yield if you plant crops on bad soil
      • Increase soil quality by one level by adding 5 cubic feet of compost
    • Fertilizer system
      • If you follow the fertilizer instructions on the wiki correctly, there's a bonus to the harvest yield
    • Explained how you can buy/build things in more detail

    Advanced Manual
    Topic: Watering Crops and Rain
The wiki page for each crop says how frequently each individual type of plant should be watered.

You can water crops by using the "Water" Action (watering can). If you choose this action, you can water up to 3 Plots in one day.

If it has rained (>2mm) in Manchester UK, all the Plots in the garden are considered "Watered" for the day. Note that <2 mm of rainfall (e.g. "scattered showers") will not count as "rain" for this game. This link has a 10-day forecast of rainfall in Manchester. You can find the amount of rainfall on past days at this link.

For simplicity's sake, it is not possible to "over-water" crops in this game, so it is fine to use the watering can as much as you like......

Failing to water crops by the deadline (see wiki page for each crop), causes the final crop yield to decrease by 20% for each day you forget to water the plant.
    Topic: Weeds
The wiki page for each crop says how frequently each individual type of plant should be weeded.

You can weed Plots by using the "Weed" Action. If you choose this action, you can weed up to 2 Plots in one day.

Weeds grow on all Plots at a rate of 0.1 lbs per day. The number is important if you want to throw your weeds into the Composter (see Composting section). To calculate the amount of weeds you picked, calculate the number of days since the Plot has last been weeded/plowed and divide this number by 10. This is the lbs of weeds you have picked.

For example, if today is Apr-3, and Plot #1 was last weeded on Mar-31 (3 days ago), I am able to collect 0.3 lbs of weeds today. This link has a date calculator if you have trouble with dates.

Failing to weed crops by the deadline (see wiki page for each crop), causes the final crop yield to decrease by 5% for each day you forget to weed the plant.
    Topic: Bad Weather
Different crops are able to tolerate different kinds of bad weather. See the wiki for each individual crop.

We monitor the weather at Manchester, UK. This link has a 10-day forecast of weater in Manchester. You can find information about the weather on past days at this link. Pay attention to the temperature lows.

    Types of bad weather:
    • Light frost: −2 to 0 °C (28 to 32 °F)
    • Hard frost: Below -2 °C (28 °F)
    • Snow: Check weather
    • Hail: Check weather

Plots that have greenhouses built over them are immune to bad weather.

Each bad weather event causes the final crop yield to decrease by 50%.
    Topic: Soil quality
This game has a simplified soil quality system, where each plot either has: "Poor", "Fair", or "Good" soil.

Freshly cleared plots start with a soil quality of "Good". Soil quality declines one level every 4 months while a crop is planted on it. For example, if a crop was planted in April in "Good" soil, then by August, the soil will be "Fair".

Soil quality affects the yield of the crop. The quality of soil at the time of planting is used to calculate the total yield at harvest:
    • Good soil: +0% bonus to harvest yield
    • Fair soil: -10% penalty to harvest yield
    • Poor soil: -40% penalty to harvest yield

Soil quality can be improved by adding compost (see "Composting") to the soil before planting using the "Fertilize" Action. Add 5 cubic feet of compost to a Plot (~1.5" of depth) to raise the soil quality by one level. Add 10 cubic feet of compost to a Plot (~3" of depth) to raise soil quality by two levels.

Compost cannot be added to Plots after crops are planted.
    Topic: Fertilizer
Fertilizer is nutrients for crops that increase the yield at harvest. Every crop has different requirements for fertilizer (see Wiki page for each crop).

If the wiki instructions for applying fertilizer is followed correctly, the harvest yield will receive a bonus:
    • Fair Fertilizer Use: +20% bonus to harvest yield
    • Excellent Fertilizer Use: +33% bonus to harvest yield
"Excellent" fertilizer use means that the soil quality was "Good/Fair" at the time of planting, and that no steps were missed during the application of fertilizer.

"Fair" fertilizer use means that the soil quality was "Poor" at the time of planting, OR an attempt was made at applying fertilizer (but some steps may have been missed).
    Topic: Composting
Composting is the method of converting organic waste into fertile soil ("compost"). The amount of time it takes to convert organic waste into compost varies from 1 month - 1 year, depending on the equipment we have.

Each compost "pile" holds 810 lbs of organic waste and produces 1 cubic yard (27 cubic feet) of compost. Currently, since we are composting in plain "piles", it will take 1 year to convert waste to compost. The "pile" should be turned with the "Turn Compost" Action once per month.

The 1-year timer does not start until the pile is at least 75% full.

Adding material to the compost pile does not cost any action points, and can be done for free.
    • Food waste - Every NUF member can add 1 lb of food waste once per day.
    • Weeds - Weeds can be added to the composter (see "Weeds" section)
Compost can be purchased from the store for $50 per cubic yard.
Topic: Purchasing Materials and Selling Crops
Since this game is a semi-realistic simulator, it is possible to purchase essentially anything you think is necessary for the garden. If you are able to find a link online selling it (preferably in USD), we are able to "purchase" it.

Shipping costs are free... because this is a magical garden. :blobpats:

To purchase something, find a link for what you wish to purchase and post in this thread. Please ping @lychee so we can discuss whether it's a good idea to buy it for the garden, and if it's approved, we'll add it to the inventory.

To gain money for the Garden, there are two ways:
    • Sell crops (see the wiki page for each crop -- the retail price per pound is set)
    • Donate nuffies to @Get Tony To Tease Parth Fund. For every 1000 nuffies you donate, the garden will gain $10. You must contact @lychee to redeem nuffies that you donate. If a NUF member doesn't redeem it, it isn't counted.
    Topic: Building and Construction
Since this game is a semi-realistic simulator, it is possible to build practically anything you want so long as we have the materials and tools for it.

If you wish to build something (e.g. a chicken coop), you must:
    • Find a guide online that explains in detail how to build it. If an online guide does not exist, you must somehow produce a blueprint that provides sufficient detail that you could actually build it in real life.
    • Acquire the exact materials you need to build it:
      • E.g. Lumber, nails, tools, with the quantities you need.
      • Provide links with prices for every item you require.
      • You can check and use anything from the Inventory on the wiki.
    • Calculate the total cost to buy the materials/tools required.
    • Calculate the number of "Actions" it would take to construct your project.
      • Each "Action" is about equivalent to about 1 hour of volunteer labor.
      • E.g. If you think it would take you 3 hours to build something, it would take 3 Actions (3 days) to complete your construction project.
Please post in this thread and discuss with @lychee and other gardeners before you start construction projects or buy materials... the garden only has limited money, and building things can be expensive too.

However, if you donate money to the Garden (see "Purchasing/Selling"), @lychee will probably be okay with it if you spent your own money (converted from nuffies) to build whatever you want.
Topic: How to get new seeds or crops
To get new crops, first you do your research on your proposed crop. Please see the Turnip (Purple Top) wiki page as an example.

    Required information includes:
    • Planting Dates: What seasons/dates can the plant be grown in?
    • Growth time: How many days does it take for the plant to grow?
    • Seed Bag Price: How much does it cost to buy seeds (find an actual link on Google)
    • Seed Consumption: How much seeds (in grams) do you need to plant in one "Plot"
    • Crop Yield: How many lbs of crop does one "Plot" produce?
    • Retail Price: How much can one lb of crop be sold for?
    • Growing Instructions:
      • Please convert the real-life growing instructions into "game actions".
      • How frequently do you need to water the crop?
      • How frequently do you need to weed the crop?
    Keep in mind that:
    • 1 Plot = 1/1000th of an acre = 4 square meters = 43 square feet
    • The climate of this garden is about the same as the Manchester, UK
    • For "Seed Consumption", you can look up "Seed Rate" on google
    • Please provide references for all the information you collect
It sounds like a lot of work... but good luck! This is a somewhat realistic simulation though, so try your best to get somewhat realistic information.

After you have collected all your data, post in this thread, and if @lychee approves it, it will be added to the Wiki.

    Buying:
    • 50 lbs (800 oz) of Potash fertilizer (0-0-60 NPK) - $18.99 (Standish Milling, it's cheaper in bulk than in the smaller quantities...)
    • 10 lbs (160 oz) of Urea fertilizer (46-0-0 NPK) - $9.99 (Walmart)
    • Total: $28.98
Added both of these to the Garden inventory. Garden bank balance is now: $1190.02

...So for those of you who were waiting for fertilizer to be bought to plant things, well, there it is! I did quite a lot of research to figure out what should be the balance between compost vs. fertilizer, but I think the values are all finalized now on the Wiki. T___T

The Wiki pages for each crop should clearly say exactly what to do in the Instructions section, so it should be easy to follow.

If you use fertilizer, remember to update the Inventory on the wiki.

The challenging part is that commercial farmers don't actually use "compost", and they fertilize with chemicals without composting. However, this is looked down on by organic farmers and home gardners because it's bad for the soil. Home gardners, on the other hand, usually have no idea what they're doing with fertilizer and most people add too much of a default (e.g. 10-10-10 NPK) without even bothering to test the soil. Too much fertilizer isn't good either because it accumulates over time.

So I managed to find regional soil test values in the Manchester UK area (regional average): pH (6.25), P Index (3 = 35ppm), K Index (1 = 90ppm), Mg Index (3 = 150ppm).

In short, the natural soil in the garden is low in Potassium. Then I did a little number juggling between the exact nutrient values recommended for commercial farmers and subtracted a constant amount (50-50-50 lbs/acre) to account for the compost.

    ----------------------

    Tips:

    • If you "weed" a plot, you can throw the weeds you pick onto to compost pile (Plot #1)

    ---------------------

    Questions for everywhere:
    • Is it inconvenient for the Inventory to be on the wiki main page?
    • Would it be easier if everyone just copy-pasted inventory with every post?
    • Something like this?:
    Today is Apr-4 (Heavy Rain - 8.9mm):
    1. Composting Pile [1/810 lbs]: Built (Apr-4)
    2. Turnip (100 HP): Plowed (Apr-2), Planted (Apr-3), Watered (Apr-4)
    3. Soil (Good): Plowed (Apr-2), Watered (Apr-4)
    4. Soil (Good): Plowed (Apr-2), Watered (Apr-4)
    5. Soil (Good): Plowed (Apr-2), Watered (Apr-4)
    6. Soil (Good): Plowed (Apr-4), Watered (Apr-4)
    7. New Plot: Clearing (2/3 progress)
"Built" a composting pile on Plot #1, though it's just a pile.... so it's not like it took any effort.

Free action: I also added my food leftovers (1 lb) to the composting pile

---------------- copy above this line ----------------

Let's try out copy-pasting the Inventory along with the game. This way, people don't need to edit the wiki when they use seeds or fertilizer.

Feedback on whether this is easier/harder is welcome!
