NUF's Programming Club For the curious newcomer, bored techno-wizard, rusty practitioner, or even the battle-hardened enterprise veteran, welcome to NUF's programming club in which members can discuss their current projects, talk about up-and-coming technologies, ask for help (although you might want to try StackOverflow first), or pitch ideas to collaborate with other members on. This club is inspired by the NUF Book Club and made in hopes of getting users excited to learn and collaborate in making projects with each other. The plan is to have one major project up at all times, which can be broken into smaller projects or tasks that anyone can pick up. All code will open-source and hosted on github and we'll be using Trello as a scrum board. Current Projects: Given what everyone knows, we're thinking of starting off with making a website. Idea pitches are currently requested. Spoiler: List of Ideas so far: Challenges: For those that aren't particularly interested in collaborating in a project, waiting for project details to flesh out, or still learning, every once in a while a challenge will be posted here for you to attempt. There are three levels of challenges: easy (meant for beginners), medium (meant as a somewhat difficult, but brief challenge for someone more experienced), and harder (a challenge may include several different medium length exercises). Post your answers in a spoiler in the form of a code snippet or external link. While it's encouraged to go out and look up tutorials on how to do things, try not to cheat. Spoiler: Current Challenge Easy: Make a heads or tails simulator (bonus: with images or animations) Medium: Make a tool that encrypts/decrypts based on the Caesar Cipher Harder: Make a tool that composes a poem out of inputted text. Here's one project that I can think of at the moment. 1) NUF currently has a currency system in place, but we can't really do much with it. How about we design a fun money-sink, like a game, for NUF users to throw their money at? I'd love to hear other ideas.
pay $$$ for emojis you can forever use in the forum. not really a money sink, nor a game but its something
Club? You mean sect. If you are making sect, you better be prepared for war. Kidding. Looking forward to what ever you guys doing, I know nothing about coding.....
I thought about doing programming once but considering what happens.... I realized I don't have any talent at it.
@R0ro @Fish Aristicrat @pentadrian @TheLazySphinx @OverlyFriendly If ya'll are interested in projects, actually how about we see what we all know to see where we should start off with our first project. I know python, javascript, java, html/css decently well and have a bit of working knowledge of sql and c as well. I'm pretty comfortable with making interactive websites, although design isn't really my strength. As for desktop applications I've got next to no experience with guis, but I can do some of the backbone work. And, I'd love to learn how to make mobile apps. and @Siceraria It's totally cool if you know nothing. I can help you get started if you're ever interested in learning, and I'm sure there are others out there willing to give you a hand as well.
usually more of a lurker on the forums, but I love programming. would be fun to see what happens. I'm comfortable with node servers, plain javascript in general, java, and c and have woking knowledge html/css. I can work with some other stuff but that's the basic.
Lemmy join in. As IS student, imma really really suck at the practice. only a bit better at theory and the management. Too many algorithm is maybe the only thing that make my head crash early on... lemme join this club for make me became better to understand things'.
You know what? We ought to come up with a data driven bot that can spin reasonable xianxia tales with a given input set. Like if we enter terms like "young master","I, your father" etc., and supplement with grammar rules and a dictionary, how readable would those outputs be? Jokes aside, I'm comfortable with C++, Python, Typescript and general java
Dang I might join. I was taking a java class in community college but only passed with a B and couldn't take the second class because it requires calculus so I stopped and went to networking. Just bought my books for ccna so hopefully I pass that. How important is math if I do want to back into programming. I'm been pretty interested to learn again. Been seeing some cool projects with pic uC so been considering picking up C or assembly
I know Java, c#, c, UNIX shell, windows form applications, assembly, and I have a bit of working knowledge in Python, SQL and HTML/CSS
Having good management would be a godsend, to be completely honest. While I think that'd be a real stretch to do, because we'd have to go over tons of novels and annotate grammar rules (I've kind of done this before and it was a pain even in a small setting). It definitely sounds interesting. If you're interested check out: https://github.com/Lasagne/Recipes/blob/master/examples/lstm_text_generation.py I've heard some people have generated poems in a Mark Twain style doing it? Or maybe that was something else.
