I thought a thousand gold was supposed to be a small fortune at this point in the game?

Money talks. They never actually expected to have to pay anyone for succeeding in accomplishing kill count incentives.

This whole mercenary contract Skies Above Skies agreed to is so incomprehensible. Ch-52 says Guildmaster Chunwoong owns some buildings in real life, so as a businessman, he shouldn't have been unfamiliar with constructing contracts that are favorable to himself. I can't imagine any shrewd businessman wouldn't have his danger sense tingling if someone comes to him with custom, outrageous conditions and had the apparent confidence to uphold it (ch-48). :hmm: He should have put in some additional exit conditions of his own.

What would a "standard" mercenary contact consists of? Ch-48 only tells us the Guild agrees to pay the mercenary 4000 gold for some unspecified period or until the mercenary is killed. This unspecified period seems to be what trapped Skies Above Skies to Blake. I can't imagine that the period would be indefinite, so how long is it? How long does a Guiild War usually take? How long would a player want to play as mercenary before they get bored and want to go back to grinding levels instead? One week? Two? At most a month? According to ch-52, this one lasted about a month, but that was mostly due to both sides running out of money. Chunwoong should have shorten the contracted period to perhaps a week (if it was normally longer) just as a precaution under the pretense of needing to evaluate Blake's performance due to his unusual contract conditions, and then only renewing it on a weekly basis if he could continue fulfilling his kill counts or if they felt like it. (!!!)

In addition, was there no clause in the mercenary contract for firing the mercenary? Even employees at real life companies can be fired at (almost) any time for due cause, and the cause could be anything the company can creatively justify. If there's a severance payment for cancelling the contract, just pay it and kick him out. (!!!)

Also, when Skies Above Skies started to have trouble paying Blake for his kills, why did they keep deploying him with their patrols and raid teams? If he doesn't kill any enemies, then there's no cost. :notlikeblob: While Blake got them to agree to let him fight freely by himself, that's only during their team battles. Outside the battles, Blake agreed to follow the Guild's mission orders. Thus, they could have just excluded him from their pvp activities and commanded him to not "recklessly" engage the enemy on his own time. And I'm sure if they had asked politely, Gold Rush would have agreed to avoid him too in non-contested areas. It's so simple: if no missions, no kills. (!!!)

And all that being said, why didn't Chunwoong or Taemin just approached Blake to ask for renegotiating or cancelling their contract? Again, were there no exit clauses?

My guess is that being a merc is basically a quick money making route for players down on their luck. Standard contract is paid 4000 for recruitment, and contract ends with death. So a player is being compensated with 4K for level loss and time. This way, they can fill the ranks with bodies, because better players have MUCH better ways to make gold. Obviously the quality of mercs is just not high.

Also, they need to hire a lot of people, so they're not going to be picky.

They just didn't realize that a very high level player with a major grudge is trying to game the system...

    New chapter, just a filler.

Well, maybe because Sky Above Skies didn't think that Blake would perform as spectacular as he did. I mean you gotta pay premium for the best right?

Yes, Sky simply lacked the imagination that someone could dispatch THOUSANDS of players...sounds super impossible...

They never worried about the contract because it would only bite them in the ass under specific circumstances...which were engineered by Blake.

The Sky guild probably thought that Blake would only kill 100~ish people, not 1000~

Not expecting Blake to exceed the norm is not the problem. My question is why couldn't the SAS Guild get out of their contract with him? And if they couldn't for whatever dumb reason, then why did they keep asking him to join their activities? If they had just told him that they didn't need him or kept him out of the combat zones (like have him be the security guard for their HQ in the City), then Blake wouldn't have been able get more kills. No kills, no bounties.

    Scroll of Oath.

Also, as much as they couldn't afford Blake's bounties, they NEEDED him. Remember between Gold Mountain's prices and facing superior resources of the Gold line, their ONLY hope was a decisive Quick victory. Blake was killing more enemies than their entire elite squad. He was their only chance to win this. This was also the reason why Blake didn't target the resources until SAS betrayed him..had he done so from the beginning, SAS would have quickly won.

Of course, only Blake knew where those resources were, so only he could have quickly won...and his scroll of oath with Gold Line did not prevent him from smashing the resources himself..,

I think Blake was riffing a lot..going with the flow..add his natural cunning, and hate for both parties, and he managed to screw them both.

I believe SAS became SkyTelecom in the previous timeline...otherwise, why would he try so hard to screw them BOTH?
