Almost all of the MCs always make a big deal about how they are going to spec and "not wasting" their skill points and such...

But don't most MMORPGs now these days offer a Respec system, and often very cheaply. Heck, alot of the Novels tend to mention P2W items and such (I.E. like how the richer players [in rl] always have access to some special items), so even if its not a normal part of the game, you can't tell me its not in the cash shop.

=___= I don't know, just little petpeeves like that get at me....

Just remember the further you go in, the less and less the skill point trees and such matter, at least that's my experience from most cn VRMMO novels and the few I read on RRL

These novels are often about games that are semi-games, like a virtual reality but not completely a game. Even leveling takes them forever, the penalties are tremendous etc. They're also games that are controlled by some A.I. and not exploited by corporations to make money with cash-shops which is totally unrealistic in current games.
The p2w in these novels is people buying game currency with real life money, not 'cash shop items'.

there are a lot of absurdities included in these stories, mostly to achieve the drama the author is looking for. I often wonder at all these authors somehow trying to make us buy into the idea of a player whose character never dies. sometimes my character dies just because I am bored and decide to see how high up a building I can get from the outside, hop hop fall die, hop hop hop hop fall die, hop hop hop fall die... some dude comes along and says, "why the hell are there so many corpses here?"

Respecs are a lot less common than you’d think, actually. Although things like that - QoL improvements - have been more frequently picked up across the board as time goes on, it’s still extremely common to find MMOs that don’t allow you to respec, limit the number of characters you can have, limit inventory space, etc, etc.

Other supposedly novel-specific gimmicks like the overused and cliche “hidden classes” are things you’d never expect to find in a real MMO, yet you do. ... Even more common are things like extreme balance issues that make one type of character absurdly overpowered, or limit the number of viable progression paths a character can take.

In ways like that, novels aren’t too far off from the reality, I’m afraid.

They only really fall short because they underestimate players. So many “impossible” things only the MC can do... yeah, right. But that’s a problem with all novels. Every character other than the MC is essentially incompetent.

Really? I don't think I've seen "hidden classes" outside of single player game. At most, maybe some Subclasses or Professions.
Do you know of any off hand?

it's mostly the english based games that're horrendously casual like that. the few novels i've read that have a cash shop seem to stick to potions and buffs rather than god tier equipment or free stat points for wallet warriors. it's the RMT aspect that tends to make it seem pay to win. it's not that the game itself is implementing the imbalance, but that the world has acknowledged that game content has actual real life value and the games have adapted to profit off it.

Usually, respecs in Eastern Games are only free at the start, and then requires cash shop items (or is impossible). Since VRMMORPGs in these stories don't usually have cash shops and instead have currency conversion, they do away with those completely.

    Hi Osa! It's me, Lillimeter~

Why don't you write a vrmmorpg novel and see how detailed and interesting you can keep it?

Never played it. I’d imagine it’s like most other MMOs, though. Plagued by balance issues, weird design choices, bots and in-game currency sellers, and an abusive micro transaction system, subscription service, or both. All of which are most likely built on the foundation of a decent core game with a few really good concepts baked in, but which is hindered by developers that spend too little time fixing bugs and listening to player feedback and too much time working on the next chunk of new and thoroughly unnecessary content.

Or so I’d say about any given MMO.

i think this is one of the changes that writers do to make the story more interesting~
i mean if the story was like an actual rl mmo, would you really read it?? the answer is no. it will be boring :blobexpressionless:
