So as i was skimming through lnmtl because of reasons, i saw the cover page for PDG and noticed i found it familiar.

I just realised it looks a bit too similar to the book cover of Prince of Thorns from the Broken Empire series.

then I also noticed Novelupdates has the same cover for this CN,
    this is the Novelupdates version,

just wanna know if this is fine? I love NU and i don't want it getting in trouble for copyright or stealing works from a published book cause of something like this.

This is nothing new, 90% of chinese covers are stolen copyright stuff.

Even more odd, Qidian (owned by Tencent which is one of the largest corporations in the world) somehow lets that pass.

They're not copyright'd in China and I imagine its difficult for foreign markets to get copyrights over there. They only use DMCA stuff against TL's and such because those TLs and such are under governments that enforce DMCA. China, internally, only cares about their own laws and customs.

There is such thing as international treaties which cover copyrights from other countries and China has signed them:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berne_Convention

The only thing China is famous for, is that they only enforce copyright when something is EXACTLY the same. So changing 1 letter and you can get away with it most of the time.

But that doesn't change the fact that it is a violation of copyright.

Actually in most countries copyrights r only considered violated when there is misrepresentation/confusion to the customer
Eg. U can have a similar logo just enough that people can still tell the difference

Similarities: many swords in rubble on the ground. That's it. People sometimes have similar ideas, there's 8 billion of us. It's already debatable if this is plagiarized in the first place, how would NU who only use the image get in trouble for this? That's a far stretch.

I think you both are confusing something. What is going on is COPY and PASTE of an image that is copyrighted. Not "similar looking or similar idea", we are talking about COPY and PASTE with change of text.

Oooh, I took a second look and you're right, my bad.

Still isn't anything NU will get in trouble for, at most the publisher would ask NU to remove the image or something.

Does the image make u think u r looking at The Broken Empire series , does it make u believe u r reading that series , No , then it is not a copyright infringement I don't care how they did it

You are aware that copyright law extends not just to books but to images right? Someone paid an artist to draw said image, you can't just take it for free.

You are confusing TRADEMARK laws with COPYRIGHT laws. Two different things!

Yeah china signs those treaties and uses the DMCA because its convenient for it to do so because it lends legitimacy to its own enterprises externally and its economic adversaries adhere to those treaties amongst themselves. But reality clearly shows they give zero fucks about enforcing international copyright law just their own when its some foreign copyright being infringed. Like if an american author stole a Chinese national's art-work they'd dmca/sue you etc... and you'd have to take it down if not pay fines etc since you profited off another's work etc...

At best the creator of that cover image in this case could hope for is them switching to some other stolen piece of art. lol

It's even worse that they just put a Chinese title over the original text.
