    If phoenixes are supposed to symbolize the pinnacle of pure yang laws, why is it that nearly all phoenixes in xianxia novels are female? Or am I misunderstanding something and phoenixes aren't pure yang but just fire laws in general?

    I believe it's usually dragon = yang and phoenix = yin, since they are often juxtaposed. It varies by novel though, so there is no perfect answer

    Yang Qi or energy is normally affiliated to fire and sun. But I've never heard of a Phoenix being related to Yang x.x
    There are also Ice phoenixes after all.

    And honestly, a lot of the novels have male MCs and meeting a male phoenix will not help in selling the story.

    The phoenix fire is strong but it is NOT a yang fire... It is actually YIN (at least in the novels I´ve read)

    the golden crow, is the emblem of Yang as it represents the sun.
    the phoenix represents fire and rebirth.
    the vermillion bird represents the south.

    (all 3 are common fire creatures in xanxia)

    In some novels there's also yang fire and yin fire. So dragon's yang and phoenix is yin

    Turtle=Greater Yin (also water)
    Dragon= Lesser Yin (also wood)
    Phoenix=Greater Yang (also fire)
    Tiger=Lesser Yang (also metal)

    In Chinese mythology to my knowledge these are the four winds and heavenly generals that serve the Jade Emperor (earth to complete the five elements).
    The Turtle, Tiger and Dragon are all depicted as male while the Phoenix is depicted as female.
    Dragon and Phoenix is often contrasted to complete Yin and Yang. It used to be the Tiger and Dragon but homophobia tore them apart.

    Yang is represented by the sun. Hence male power.

    But like some novel said, woman live longer than man cause man have to endure and will die faster cause of grief.

    And they need to make the pheonix lay egg for the mc for some novel. Maybe that is the reason?

    Yin represented by moon. Hence female. But almost all good ice user in xianxia or wuxia is male. Novel logic dude.

    Every time Chinese mythology starts making a little bit of sense it all collapses in on itself.... Geeze... Between Chinese mythology and Chinese medicine I'm starting to believe the ancient Chinese just loved over-complicating everything
