I am translating a novel, and I am very new to this, so I still have a lot to learn. Here's the question : Some words in Chinese can be replace in its English version. For example, 珊迪 (Shān dí,Shan1 Di2) = SandyI am curious, the intonation of Sandy should be San1 Di4. So why didn't they use some word else. I am just intrigued about the above one, but this one stunned me. 人间冰器1号——加斯普罗斯…… = Extra-dimensional machine no.1 – Galactron First, can I interpret 冰器 as ice-cold device = machine, robot? And 间 has a meaning about between space, and 人 is about people. So, 人间 = relationship between people? Then, 加斯普罗斯......Google and Bing translated it as Gaspros! If I don't know what I'm translating about, then I won't even know what the hell this is! I searched for robots' name in Ultraman's series and if Gaspros can become Galactron, then it could has so many identities. So, Please enlighten me! And Thank You!!
I wish I could help. I have to say thou. Your thought process is shocking. It’s so professional laid out that I had to do a double take. I can’t wait to see your finish work. Good luck.
彼德 (bi 2 de 2) = peter 大卫 (da 4 wei4) = David Why? I don't know. Because it sounds better in Chinese probably. By the way. I couldn't find any westerner's name that could start with San in Chinese. 人間 is one word, you can't separate them. the human world; the world of mortals.
I might be wrong but it is possible for it to be 兵器 instead of 冰器. Human weapon number one- Galactron. It is possible for author’s to use wrong characters that sound alike sometimes so you must read and see what fits best sometimes as you translate xD I wish you all the best! Just giving you heads up in some cases that you don’t understand what the author is saying. It might be exactly what they want or can be a typo. You should also keep a name and term glossary for future reference for readers and yourself. Like 山地 (Shan Di)- (short summary of the character-eg. main lead’s bro/ main lead’s enemy ) (chapter number of his first appearance )
Doesn't know one word of Chinese... But takes out the proverbial whip (when someone wants to be "EDUCATED") ...uhaWhahaha ^^
I tried to Google "加斯普罗斯" however, nothing came up that relates to the ultraman's series. Is it possible that it was a new character that created by author?
San-cheese~ San-chus Santos. . . argh. . . to hell with this. . . . just name it yourself since your the one translating it. . . and make sure it sounds close to the Chinese? name of the character. . . . oh and don't forger to tell the readers about it. . . good luck!
加斯普罗斯 罗斯 - there's precedent of this being the translation for Rose 加斯普 - this is how Gasp is translated into Chinese, apparently (Terry Denton's Gasp! book, as well as a geographical location, at least)...*scratches head* but I think it can also be Gasper or Jasper? ¯\_(T_T)_/¯
ermm. before that, i think u have to understand how chinese people talk. they speak using different intonation. example, ( a ) -can be said in 4 different intonation a, a, a, a now try reading it in a different tone, like a e i o u, it has the up and down and flat. like music or singing. trust me, im not kidding, but it works this way...... next... to began forming sentence. as you know. different languages borrow words from different language ~~to adapt / simplify uses. there are no chinese names such as sandy. therefore, we got 珊迪. why d4 not d2? reasons, author read it that way. like asking chinese saying russia. majority will say lussia or japanese saying aeroplane. they will say eloplanto however, we will still understand, if i tell you lussia has a eloplanto. you can oda fly rice in it, it taste like foshumushu. gud gud. 人间冰器1号——加斯普罗斯 冰器- ice machine. a machine to make ice. 人间 - human world. a world where human live in. as you can see, chinese language is kinda special. they have a word for everything. i emphasis, a word. what happen if they dont have that word? they borrow it / steal it from other language. or they got really really confusing. chinese word do not have something call as dimension. they call it "different world" ghost world (hell) . elf world. orc world. or even space. it all tend with " world behind" its kinda direct. example in english we have a box. and box cutter. box - usually brown container made of cardboard cutter - a tool for cutting something = box cutter - knife to cut box or paper this actually is very similar to chinese language. cn has 1 word for box, 1 word for knife. - joint together. it became box cutter. or paper cutter. now. back to our case. 加斯普罗斯, is a word borrowed from other language. - i guess the real name might have loss in translation. to solve this. many translator will translate further / read up the novel first as to know how the plots thickens. or if there is any changes to the galactron character in future? so that the word can be safely use and no contradiction. i believe that those machines translation name is gass pro because of direct translation. 加斯 - gas 普罗斯 - professional or (pro - as in short form) 加斯普罗斯,which turn up to be gasspro wish you goodluck in your translation. if you are having difficulty, try translate word by word. it might be easier.
