I just assumed they would both be gay, honestly. Why wouldn't they be, if themselves are all they know and accept?

Yeah but if something is maintaining it, that just makes the population of the islands even more retarded. There would have to be someone or something that ensured that whenever one side had an advantage they received a setback and that being the case how often could that happen before anyone reasonably intelligent realized something was off. Though assuming that is an issue it might offer an alternative to my genocide route, the edumacation (misspelling intended) and history route. Ironically, instituting said policy on one island would almost necessitate that whatever was maintaining the balance act in such a way to prove that it existed.

Considering intimacy wouldn't be needed to reproduce why would pairing off ever occur to either society. Both are essentially asexual. The threat of the other gender force cooperation and companionship between members of the same gender but as presented there is no reason for either side to pursue intimate relations in that sense. I said it before and I know I'm being a dick, but there are so many .. holes in this particular hypothetical that there is basically no reasonable way in which to answer it. It's to the point where finding the holes in it is more entertaining the hypothetical itself. I mean are all male babies given animal milk or ... ?

Humans need intimacy to be healthy. That doesn't have to be in a romantic sense, but people become extremely depressed if they go too long without basic skinship. If they're getting close to each other, it will probably lead to romance, even if there isn't sex.

You can also consider monkeys, who use sex as a way of getting along. Humans would likely use it for bonding no matter what, because who doesn't like intimacy and pleasure?

I did mention in the prompt that the magic is deity-driven, and each island has it's own deity, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that each island has its own deity invested in its own objectives. If the deity was more likely to intervene in crisis moments for its own island, then you can mathematically model this equilibrium state.

I'm not sure if stupidity is the only conclusion. The islanders would have faith in their religion (there's the common belief that "God is on my side" or "God is (actively) helping me" or "God will make my skin bulletproof"), and seeing the underdog pull through at the darkest hour will add a lot of faith points, right?

Succeeding a defense adds more to morale than failing an attack damages morale.

Again, genocide seems to be the easiest way. Shouldn't be hard, desecrate the water supply of the opposite tribe. Wipeout, instant peace. If the remaining tribe start turning on itself, desecrate the water supply too. World peace achieved.

Except we aren't exactly talking about humans anymore are we? Besides even if there was a sense of intimacy the drive to produce children in numbers enough to keep the conflict going would likely result in more communal or polygamous relations than any sort of pairing off. Not to mention that the lack of pregnancy would likely void many taboos that exist within our own societies. For example is there any reason for said society to expressly forbid incest or pedophilia (maybe more so on the male side but basically little reason on the female side). For that matter how often would 6 year olds end up producing children ... . Like I said the hypothetical has so many holes that are quite frankly terrifying and outlandish once you really consider them.

... Deity driven magic on both sides. You don't see the problem with that?
What you are saying is there is evidence that the other side has a deity, and reason to believe that said deity will step in to protect their island at crucial moments. My question to you is how many times could you have an absolute advantage be completely nullified before you started to question your own god or just outright realize that conflict will get you absolutely fucking nowhere. And since in your initial premise stated the lakes provide babies and that the conflict has persisted long enough that producing people to take part in it has become a thing you are likely talking generations of conflicts where every advantage has been nullified and every time one side was on the verge of complete victory the tides turned. Given those conditions not realizing that victory is unattainable is downright idiotic. Or at least easily provable.

    1. Could you be happy living your entire life on an island of only your own gender?
    Yes, I could be.

    2. Would you try to change the widespread hate against the other gender? Is so, how would you approach it? Is there any way to stop the war?
...I would try by becoming a healer and start from there. I would advocate peace without violence, no matter the gender or differences in body.

    3. Your senpai tells you they are going to preemptively attack the other island. Would you join the raiding party? What are your feelings on war and violence in general?
I dislike violence and war to a great degree. I definetly would not join.

    4. Suppose there is a war prisoner from the other island on your island. Would you help them escape but risk being caught yourself?
I don't know...I'm quite the coward. I'd try to help passively by not 'seeing' or reporting them. If they deliberatelt approached and asked for help, I would be obligated. Perhaps this could help us establish peace with the other planet knowing that not all women are witches who can ensnare the mind. Although I'm not going to hold my breath if they use that as a reason for their sexual attraction. I am very much in favor of the lake babies. Maybe I can be the first to have a son by bathing in the other planet's lake?! Ah, but only if my son would not be negatively impacted all that much...

Well, I think we can use sports games as analogy.

Suppose we define a "total complete victory" as a pro soccer/football match with an overwelming score of 20-0.

This kind of "complete victory" occurs... maybe once in every 500 years?

Certainly not frequently enough that it would be in recent memory.

It would take a genius who is able to plan a 20-0 strategy with 100% certainty to realize that the 19-1 score (instead of 20-0) isn't a fluke, and actually there is a divine power who is stacking the cards so winning is impossible. And even if the genius realized it, is s/he able to convey this realization of nihilist futility to the rest of his countrymen/countrywomen? Everyone else is driven by revenge and hatred, right?

Of course, an extremely detailed (and accurate) recording of history could also reveal this through a study, but it depends on the accuracy of the record-keeping of the islands. In olden days, it was common for kingdoms to embellish the historical record to say whatever made them look good.

Provided genius was the only reason for that it holds. But you are putting the situation in a bubble. Imagine a hurricane decimates one islands war potential for an entire generation. That would mean that every assault the other side launched every winter (supposedly needed because resources and setting) for successive years would need to be repelled or fail despite a theoretical contiguous advantage and if it wasn't done in subtle ways it would tip the hat on the fact the balance is being maintained.

And that is setting aside what happens if there is only one. If there is only one wo/man, and s/he choose not to wish for a child is s/he then invincible in offense and defense. Can s/he turn his/her island into ashes and raid the fe/male island freely at will protected? Will s/he ever die? The problem with individual deities with their own agendas supporting each island is that at some point what they need to invest won't make them any return. And if there is no investment or return on their part we return to the invincibility of one. If it's not invincible one then when it reaches that point it's divine intervention. Maybe you can make it subtle but how many years could one evade capture while becoming more and more outnumbered. If you constantly make one gender reappear after being wiped then its fairly obvious some god wants it and fighting gods is dumb and quite possibly insane. I can't imagine how this scenario is possible without either revealing the balancing effect or destroying one gender or the other.long before the Celestial needs to step int.

Thanks for the great response again sal~! I really enjoy this conversation.

Well, perhaps we have different impressions of what constitutes loss or failure?

I kind of have some medieval imagery in my mind.

A bunch of raiders raid an area, all the villagers evacuate into the lord's castle. The raiders steal the food and pillage anything that is too slow to evacuate. Once the raiders are gone, the villagers leave the castle.

Sieging the castle isn't realistic because that will literally take forever, and if the raider's objective is food, then it's unnecessary to go after the castle unless you're literally aiming for the genocide.

Also, depending on the size of the island (I mentioned somewhere around the size of Taiwan as an example), you could have multiple settlements and areas on the island.

As for having only one left... that is a very extreme hypothetical.

Committing a complete genocide is quite a challenge, you know? It depends on the size of an island.

If it's like a 1 square km island, than sure, I can imagine a complete genocide.

If we're talking about 10,000 square km island... a complete genocide to that degree is much harder to imagine.

Even if you were on the aggressor side committing the genocide, you should always assume that you missed someone or that someone was in hiding. You would legitimately need to occupy the entire second island to really be sure — but then again situations like Japan's occupation of Korea from 1910 to 1945 lasted for 35 years, but even that length of time you're not sure if you rooted out all the rebels or whoever else is hiding in the mountains.

You could also consider ancient Greek religious beliefs.

For instance, it was commonly believed that there would be vengeance from the local god if you mistreated the local religious sites -- so they were often left alone by Greek warriors. There are many cautionary tails in Greek epics about individuals who ignored that practice, and then were punished by the gods for doing so.

It wouldn't be strange if you if both islands accepted that the opposite god existed -- and even feared the opposite god.

Most wars didn't occur with an objective of total genocide.

Although there may be extreme enmity or rivalry (and repeating wars over hundreds of years), it didn't always manifest on a genocidal rampage.

My issue with that is that those wars were done by humans on humans. And while you have had them share a language you have essentially made them separate species with purely hostile intentions toward each other. It isn't just a war for supplies, it's more comparable to two species competing for dominance and their own existence. You've specifically stated that they revile each other and don't even necessarily consider each other human or purely human. Given that, genocide is far more likely especially when you throw in religious reasons for the conflict in a medieval setting.

If the greek religious beliefs apply and there are cautionary tales that exposes the fact that victory is unattainable. Also given the conditions of needing resources it would be incredibly weird for neither side to try and expand to the other island and create and hold bases instead of just raiding. Even more so considering both sides are trying to produce people to help with victory in the war. It's such a fragile balance that I simply don't believe it wouldn't collapse. Besides while you say that you picture castles, why would they exist? Castle are typically constructed for human versus human conflict and while there are other reasons that could happen most of them make the balance more fragile not less. Faction disputes among races. Magical beasts. Even if you presume they were built after encountering each other that means that before that one side had a long enough time where the other side not only didn't know where they came from but also had no defences against them.

And you say genocide is difficult and that it's impossible to guarantee but you have given an easy condition to clear it. All you need to do is have enough people to bar entry to the reproductive lake for about 150 years. Time will do the rest. And if you extend peoples lives magically you simply increase the chances of the unnatural balance being noticed and/or various other things occurring to break the balance or make it obvious conflict isn't the answer.

    Uh.

Midwifery. Its good. Hospital births are bad. I did have a few sources but I looked it up ages ago.

You havent heard of the horrors of childbirth starting at the 20th century? Women rights movements were going and they decided if painkillers were possible then sure.... but then things got fucked up.

Current hospital position to give birth is the worst position possible, biologically.

Gravity goes down. That position with legs up was designed to restrain women who were suffering from ill effects of bad medicine and thrashing about. Women in the 1910s didnt really remember the experience and thought the painkillers were effective since the meds killed their memories. The meds also made children be born without arms or legs but whatever. There are documentaries on the horrors of childbirth after men stepped in to make the process 'better'

I think I could find a link to a video about midwifery somewhere... remind me on the weekend. Had to watch it for school and it aligned with my prior research.

    Yeah. Its real.

Why else would women have in human history been *happy* about giving birth to 11+ kids?

Ways to abort existed. If it was as painful then as it is with hospital births, which can crush a womans pelvis bone, since women *should* give birth in a position where gravity would aid the process, like say squatting or on hands and knees, since thats how the pelvis bone is designed. On your back with legs in the air? No wonder its painful. Average woman isnt very fit and now has to risk crushing her pelvis bone or injuring her spine to give birth *while* fighting gravity????

Uh. Who decided that was a good idea.
Oh right. Men who injected drugs into women that screwed them up and deformed infants and had the women thrashing from losing their mind and needing to be restrained. Also that makes it convenient to cut a woman open to remove the baby

Which should absolutely not be done and is only necessary in like less than .01% of childbirths... assuming a woman isnt in a completely wrong position and fighting gravity and drugged to the gills.
