I think furry is most widely understood as dressing up in a head to toe animal costume (everything completely covered) and having sex with someone who is similarly dressed? (The things I learned watching C.S.I.)

Look, Furry and bestiality are just a paper thin difference and the closer you get, the harder it is to come back to. Thats why people tend to avoid furries since they know that once you come in, there's no way to come out.

Well depending upon the fanfic, Pokemon are sentient and sapient creatures able to give consent. So it wouldn't be bestiality, more something like xenophilia.

 

Furry and Beastiality are quite different due to the aspect of sapience/sentience. The most problematic part of bestiality isn't the fur, but the lack of ability for an animal to give consent in such a relationship. Similar to how children can't give consent.

 

I feel like I still disagree about the difference being paper thin. I think the critical thing to understand about the furry fandom is that it’s about self-identity (seeing oneself as a anthropomorphized animal), not because people have an inherent sexual attraction to animals. Bestiality (sex between a human and dumb animal) has zero furry element to it, and I’ve never heard of a furry being interested in it.

So I looked this up afterwards, but the statistic is that only 10-25% of furries even own a partial fursuit (let alone even a complete one).

It’s a highly misrepresented part of the fandom; it’s highly visible and frequently reported on part from the media, but it would be wrong to say that a majority of furries do it or are even interested.

I’m really only revisiting this because I’m quite positive the middle school me could be considered a furry, and I think there is a serious misunderstanding about the overall fandom (I mean, of course you can rule 36 anything).

To me, the broadest definition of a furry is someone who identifies with an animal in any fashion, and expresses that identity in some fashion.

When I was thirteen, I really liked animals and did animal forum roleplays — like the kind where it is catverse and everyone is a cat and lives in a forest.

The are many books that anthropomorphize animals in this fashion — from children’s books, the Redwall series, Warriors series, and tons and tons of books.

Of course this was 0% sexual. No one ever said that roleplaying animals must mean that is sexual. We just liked animals.

As I got older, I started doing artwork and I drew animals on deviantart. Keep in mind that the Zootopia depiction of animals is still very different from a realistic depiction of animals. Essentially I did Zootopia-style deviantart drawings and made a lot of friends there.

Still nothing sexual.

When you roleplay as animals for so long, inevitably you start feeling like there is an animal you feel like represents you better than other animals.

I had a Fursona on devianart in middle school that I drew — because I felt like cats represented me best.

I had a chuunibyou period online when I appended nyaaaa to everything I said.

There is nothing sexual here because there is nothing inherently sexual about furries unless someone decides to sexualize it!!!! >.<

It’s similar to the my little pony fandom that is similarly stigmatized — the content itself isn’t sexual — of course you will get people who sexualize it. That is rule 36 or 34 or 32 of the Internet I forget which one.

You could take the sweetest and cutest thing in the world and there will be people who make boatloads of porn of it — but that doesn’t even mean that the majority of the fandom is that way.

Sex/Porn/Fursuits play a minority role into what most people get into the furry fandom for.

While I agree defining it like this has some side effects. Like it implies that if animals can give consent it is A-okay. Which to be fair is controversial yet probably should be how it is.

The question is what is "wrong" for you? If it's different species, then why are you fine with half-elves, etc in fantasy?
