Quiz time V2.0

Quiz time aka my assignments are too hard so im begging for some help...an answer with a solution is appreciated.

1.) Vina's mother is 12 years more than twice her age. After 8 years, Vina's age will be 20 years less than three times her age. Find Vina's age.

2.) Tina’s age is three times the sum of the ages of his two sons. After 5 years his age will be twice the sum of the ages of his two sons. Find the age of Tina.

3.) The sum of 4 times a larger integer and 5 times a smaller integer is 7 . When twice the smaller integer is subtracted from 3 times the larger, the result is 11 . What is the larger integer?

I got -41/23 for Q3, I mean that's the answer for the larger integer, haven't solved Q1 & Q2

P.S. please correct me if I did a mistake there, the answer seems weird

 

1.) x+8 = 3x-20 Age after 8 years
2.)3x+5=2(x+10) Age after 5 years
3.)4x+5y=7
3x-2y=11
Its not that hard.

 

That's why I wonder why we find an integer. I think it's a cake too.

Question 1's answer depends on who is "her", so we may have 2 results.

 

Probably the 'her' there refers to Vina 8 years later
I got same answers as yours for Q1 & Q2

 

I think so, too, for the most straightforward match.

If "her" is her mom, I don't want to waste more of my too few brain cells on it.

 

yeah been more than decade this cat see such questions, on this type of question it force student to analyse each factor err point err variable before solve the problem.... the mistake on pin what is what is nightmare.... back then some teacher is pure evil make many cats mistaken to identify the variable so....

 

I don't like this type of variable, too. Even I try hard; I only have a half score on each question. If I'm lucky, I may pass the test; if not, well, I don't want to recall it anymore.

 

We once had this kind of question set up by the ministry and what did my maths teacher said? He said something like "this isn't maths, this is English (or Thinking Skills)..It just tested your understanding in English more than maths itself." ....Hmm perhaps that questions really aren't from maths, what do you say @PedoBear Version 2.0 ?

 

Guys guys im too dumb so i dont know the answer neither its formula or sh*ts like that especially because its a fcking sentence which my 2 1/2 brain celled cant translate to proper equation ,i dont know who's her is being mentioned in Question #1 I literally copied the question here teheee ^_<

well, its just only my grade that was at stake here sooo... LOL

 

any symbol work, the purpose of algebra is to train us using symbol placeholders to try identify potential problem, differentiate factor or variable on the problem and how to solve it~ this symbol can become number, item or anything in real life application as long as it countable~ hence there hierarchy structure on learning mathematics~ multiplication, division, algebra, root, function, log, matrix, limit, thing this cat forget what it call then calculus.... there also area on 2d then 3d move to trigonometry then bunch of.... nightmare.... this cat may screw up the order tho~

hmmm good luck~ it seem your teacher may not teach how to point out which one is X, Y, Z etc from question aka translating regular sentence into proper math then again it may deliberate to teach student to do it themselves~

oh there thing called mathematical logic you learn later, truth or false based on mathematics~

btw for this algebra type you must be quite young~ around middle school at earliest to first grade on high school maybe? cuz that when this cat see this kind of question back then~

We have 2 unknown datums here: Vina's mother's age and Vina's age, so we call Vina's mother's age is y or anything you want, Vina's age is x or anything you want.
And 2 "her" can be Vina or Vina's mother.

Her #1 "Vina's mother is 12 years more than twice her age".
"her#1" is Vina coz it's nonsense if "her#1" is Vina's mother, Vina's mother's age can't be 12 years more than Vina's mother's current age.
So we have: y - 2x = 12 or y = 2x +12

Her #2 "After 8 years, Vina's age will be 20 years less than three times her age."
If "her#2" is Vina, then we have: x + 8= 3x - 20 => x = 14.
If "her#2" is Vina's mother, then we have: x + 8= 3y - 20 => x + 8 = 3(2x +12) - 20 => x<0 => invalid.
Vina's age can't be a negative number. She isn't some ghost who waits for the next life in a line, so "her#2" can't be Vina's mother.
Actually, I jumped straight to (x + 8= 3x - 20) after I read the quiz, so yeah, you could shorten the answer.

Can you teach me how you solve this? I want to learn too so that i could answer some of my own. And the translation to numerical form is a big life saver.
