I see it as more logical for them to be the kids, their interaction with the other planets is almost none existent but they do have a big roll in the life of their parent. Going further down this train of thought, if the Sun is the king/emperor/what ever i see the asteroid belt as the palace walls (which also puts our moon in a special place). The planets beyond are the concubines and those of lesser bloodlines or just those getting on in age Jupiter
Sun is the father, planets are the mother, while the moon's are the offspring. Anything smaller than that are just parasites that should be cleansed. Now all that aside, does anyone else find it funny the 4 mother planets cloest to the sun could all be considered lollies when compared to the other four?
I want to say an applicable terminology for what you are describing would be something like: environmental homeostasis. The only reason why I think I remember the term homeostasis is from watching the 1996 movie Bio-Dome. Here is a trailer for that movie, if so inclined to check it out:

Hmm..in the nuclear scenario that does make sense. Like, patriarchal society blah blah blah..electron goes out to work while proton stays at home. And neutron stays in the closet.. I feel so evil.
