When someone marks a novel as 1 star, 90% of the time it's because they disagree due to personal reasons or are just trying to bring down the rating to something they believe is "reasonable" For example, they enjoy 100 chapters but chapter 100 to 150 is filler so they complain about it and mark it 1 star. Quidan's novels are also 1 star, now granted they're not that great a company but their novels do not deserve a 1 star. But people will mark it a 1 star because of their anger at Quidan, or because the story has gotten annoying and it's Quidan so hey ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ When you're looking for a story and the 1 star ratings are outweighed by 5 stars, but outweigh 2,3,4 combined. You know it's not a real rating, just a crowd of whiners; but the rating was dragged down regardless. Implementing this change would diminish the number of troll ratings, as well as improve the search engine to something most readers would find enjoyable. Most readers are "mindless" which is what the 5 star ratings are. If you disagree, then check how many 5 star stories you enjoy. Above 1 star is generally representative of a true review, 1 star is representative of a boy throwing a tantrum as very very few stories deserve a 1 star. The reviewers would mark it -100 stars if they could, because it's the "true" rating. So why pander? They wouldn't notice their ratings don't mean anything. Now I'm not saying every 1 star rating means nothing, sometimes they are accurate or have a good meaning behind them. But the majority seem to find one plotpoint they disliked and rated it 1 star, which destroys the rating system.
Tbh, other novels also suffer the insta 1 stars when they're newly added, albeit QI's novel got them more, I think the main reason is just that a lot of people block them so not many people here read their novels, which is why those insta 1 stars affected their novels more. Agreed, it's like 1 star if they didn't like it or 5 star if they like it. They don't care about objectivity.
Ratings are very subjective and you have no way of knowing what is a hater's rating and what is a real rating. Simply ignore the existence of ratings altogether, they're useless, it's very unlikely any change to the rating system will happen unless you can convince Tony-chan that it's an objective improvement to the system~
Yeah that's a pretty good point. Something like a 1 star and 5 star rating is worth 50% a real rating. So you rate it 3 stars and 1 stars. Added together, the story has a final weight of (3 + 0.5) / (1 + 0.5) = 2.33 stars. Where before it would be 2.
That would defeat the purpose of having 1 to 5 stars. Might as well make it 1 to 3 instead if this is the solution. Instead of arbitrarily stating that user rating doesn't matter, it's better to make novels only rated by logged in users and publicize the names of those who rated the novel. This encourages other users to notice patterns in 1 star votes and report them. It also encourages 1 star voters to give comments to justify their 1 stars or risk having their rating removed for being toxic. To be fair though, many of qidian's novel do deserve their 1 stars.
The rating system has been useless anyways, moreover it just isnt the 1* that's the problem, 5* are problematic too. Basically ignore the ratings and even reviews
I find the reviews to be the helpful part though. Like, I'll completely ignore the star rating most of the time, and instead read the reviews to get an idea of a particular novel. Sometimes they don't make any substantial statements, but often they do.
You are wrong there... Satisfaction means different things to different people, that is, different people look at different things for satisfaction. For example, plot/setting theme character development poetic language/literature story continuity Personally, I look at the theme and story continuity. If I really don’t like the theme, and the summary or tag dosen’t describe that theme, then the novel gets 1* If the author repeatedly time-skips without explaining the new setting, then the novel gets 1*
if it bothers that much that a 1 star weights so much in a rating then you are barking to the wrong tree, try talking with the matheticians in the world to change how basic basic operations such as sum and division works.
Agreed. People will rate some novels 5* because they like the genre or because of all the 1* reviews. +1 ---- I would like to propose an amended solution. 1* and 5* are given a lower weight to the overall rating of a novel unless the person who gave the novel a 1* or 5* writes a review for that novel. I think Ai-chan's method of only allowing logged in users to rate novels would also work.
