Discussion Ratings with Few Chapters

Just came across a few novels here and there with >10 chapters, yet there were already reviews/ratings saying, "too slow" or "it's really early to tell" etc..
Not really sure why you're rating a novel with only ~5 chapters out (well, you shouldn't at least).
I doubt people rate books on the first three chapters, or movies in the first 20 minutes.

If you're one of those people, enlighten me please.

p.s don't ask about what novels, I've come across them a while ago/forgot, but just didn't say anything

 

Hmm.. but I have dropped novels in 1 chapter. Can't hook, then I won't look further into the story.

 

That's fine. I'm talking about people that read 1-3 chapters and then rate it with superficial reasoning.

 

Not really sure why you would want to discuss this.
People have their reasons, ok?
Some people read raws ahead; for some books 5 chapters is plenty to judge them.

Well, at least I'm mainstream.

 

I do rate them early sometimes, when I don't like it or when I like it very much. Afterwards I can just edit my rating if I changed my opinion, though I usually don't review them. What more reasons would I need?
About the 'too slow' thing, maybe it really is too slow for those people, they have other preferences, they want it to be full of action and move along fast so I think it's still okay, but the 'it's really early to tell' sounds kind of neutral so it should probably not be followed by a rating...

 

Why people couldn't share opinion even if it's only a few chapters? I think it's ok if it's argumented and if every body keeps in mind that's just an early review.
Some people even come back later to edit their review when there is more chapters.

 

Sharing an opinion, and rating it based on a few chapters are different things.
I've seen reviews where the user said they'd come back in the future and update it, but haven't at all.

They can do it because it is allowed by the site admin. If the site would restrict users so they are unable to rate until a certain number of chapters they can't rate/review it. This also happened to MAL before when everyone start rating before anime was even out.

Not really.. the site admin also allows me to randomly put tags on any novel I want, but does that mean I should? No.

I read the first 10 chapters of ISSTH, but found it incredibly boring and bland, so I gave it a 1 star. I wonder how people feel about that.

You can write a review without rating it as far as I'm aware.
So reviewing and rating a novel aren't strictly the same.

 

As far as I know they currently ban or warn people who troll tags, not sure, but I think I saw something like that...

What should people feel about it? It's your opinion, it's completely legit. I like ISSTH, it's one of my favorites but it doesn't mean all people who dislike it are my enemies. Even if you only read the first chapter and gave it 1 star I still wouldn't mind. Everyone has their own preference and freedom in expressing it.

Maybe they're still waiting for more chapters to pile up or simply didn't have the time...

 

That's not really my point. I'm just saying people should understand the novel as a whole before really rating it.

 

Yes, they allow you to put tags on a novel but they don't allow to you to put a false tag. There is report function for it. So this is a different matter compared to the rating.

And I am not talking about the rule here. @Tony can make it so people can't rate/review until a certain number of chapters are released. There is no function like that yet so there is no reason people won't rate/review if they felt like it.

Well, I disagree with that. Why? No real reason. Why should I completely understand a novel that I already know I won't like? Doesn't that mean I should read a novel to completion before rating it at all? In that case most novels here wouldn't have any rating... Also how would you set the bar for rating? At 50 chapter? At 100? There are novels that don't even have that many chapters...
There's already the fact that you can change your rating which in my opinion is more than enough...

 

To a reasonable degree obviously. People still rate the top novels even though they're not close to finishing (some of them).
Maybe 30 chapters, idk.

 

There are ten thousands of users on NU. It would be impossible to all of them to have patience, moral or ethics. It can be only solved in a technical way.
