Recommendations Recommend novel with smart yet kind MCs

So I’ve been having trouble finding good things to read lately. Could anyone recommend some good stories with non-braindead MC that actually has moral values? It feels like so many stories have “logical” (not really) “smart” (not really) MCs that are pretty deplorable character-wise (e.g Reverend Insanity). I’m looking for stories with a smart and rational MC that actually has moral values and doesn’t wantonly kill, pick a fight, or want to put people down all the time.

Honestly I hate harems a lot, since they dont make any sense. But this is the one novel where I will forgive it. The MC is smart and sensible, and he truly is weak. The story is really well written and the females arent just 1 dimension buffoons. This is definently worth a read. Also the best part, the relationships actually evolve, it's not platonic throughout the story, the characters arent tsundere or anything of that sort. Truly a refreshing read and how harems should be done.

 

Altina the Sword Princess. Now hear me out. This might have a harem tag, but so far it actually is not. It has some of those troupes you might see in harem bullshit, but so far none of the girls except the main heroine seem to have any romantic feelings for him so I still consider it to not be a harem.

Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry. It starts love triangle on at first but then becomes OTP instead of harem. Also, really smart protagonist, massively skilled fighter who actually uses strategies and techniques instead of just muscle.

Ooh right, I’ve read ISSTH. Great novel! There were still times I’d want to face palm with Meng hao, but it’s not bad. Never heard of the Trafford Trading Club one before though. The premise sounds interesting, but at the same time it feels like the type of story that can drag. How did you like it?

Oo the history’s strongest senior brother one looks interesting. I’ll go check that out. The Altna one...sorry, I really hate harems or harem tropes, also ones where a weak male MC are constantly saved and doted upon.

Oh the rating for that isn’t actually bad. I hate harems and usually high tail at the speed of light when I see a harem tag, but I’ll take your word and give it a shot!

Oh, and yeah I’ve read and liked Honzuki, at least halfway through until she made a decision that imo was a bit airheaded/nonsensical.. The reborn otaku one sounds a bit like Dominion’s End, might give it a try though. Thanks!

Thanks. After checking the comments on the royal reader one, I think I’ll pass on it. Seems like the author/MC is a bit shallow....I’ll probably be annoyed again. xD Definitely will give the clearing an isekai a try though!

Isaac - The main character is pretty smart, but he's put through a lot of shit and loses faith in most other people. It's a pretty entertaining read. I only hesitate because he's far from the most moral of MC's... but if you compare him to your typical mass-murdering cultivation MC, he's moral.

but I think theres a reason the popularity fell
In all honesty we have mc who is mostly passive, and there are few times where he shines as the mysterious badass boss
i was just overall irritated by slow pacing, idgaf bout the side charecters, and its not always that their plot is good
and in general i found the "sweet moments" between mc and his puppet almost gf to be naseuating
ofc most reviews will say otherwise, the pacing wasnt fast enough for me to appreciate the story
its for people who like reading long winded plots and pick up the crumbs and savoring the taste of it all coming together

Yea, History's Strongest Senior Brother so far has been great all round. Only problem is the updates!! Fucking hell. I hope they stay till the end and update regularly. In terms of your requirements for the story the MC is really resourceful and every battle he fights he is usually fighting against people who have higher cultivation realms than him (like every other fucking cultivation novel), but what I like about this is that he almost always outsmarts them rather than overpower them...which is probably the best part of it. The fighting itself is pretty bad, its just throwing fancy skills at each other like you're playing World of Warcraft and that would've been a huge blow to the story if the largest part of their battles had not been mind games. Honestly, I don't remember a single skill or power of theirs or who uses what and it hasn't made a single difference to my reading enjoyment. Author made the right choice to have less of direct fights since he's ABSOLUTE SHIT at it. Also, it's not harem! MC finds himself a girl pretty early on and stays loyal to her. He doesn't have many encounters with women either. He's got morals too, a really sociable person who makes friends with everybody he can and doesn't see them as pawns to use for his benefit.

Also, a shame about Altina. It was the only other work I found that has army battles on the strategic level of Kingdom manga and that makes me love it so much since Kingdom is my favourite. These large scale battles of wit where individual power doesn't mean anything and winning against greater enemy numbers through sheer tactical genius is pretty cool. You won't believe me if I say the harem truly is very non-existent? He IS kind of a wimp but pretty quickly only 2 volumes in he becomes a celebrity known as the wizard all around his country for his big brain. Also, at the end of the volumes when you find out what he was actually planning throughout the volume you realise that while he was stuttering and sweating nervously in front of the crown prince and whatnot, he brain was putting plans in motion to absolutely crush them and decimating all that they stood for...and that's kinda cool, makes you realise he's got balls but he's probably just bad at socialising or really good at acting. lol
Any, the harem tag exists because of the girls who are the main heroine's maid (who is aware the heroine is in love with the MC and completely supports her), a woman with 4 husbands who only asked his hand in marriage as a joke, a tiny bookshop owner, and an enemy mercenary...all of whom (and some others who were even more inconsequential than these women) except the maid only made appearances ONCE throughout the whole of 14 volumes! The mercenary might make more appearances but they don't seem to be interested in each other anyway, I think she'd rather not face him much since he deduced her embarrassing secret. There are other girls too but the MC doesn't get along with them very well. Out of all of them the only one who might have feelings for him is the bookshop owner...and I don't even know how I remember her considering how little screen-time she had.
I'm just saying, it feels like a harem but the author is so busy with the other greater parts of the story that he kinda just forgets that its a harem...? Does that make sense? Feels like a harem but is not a harem if you think about it. Also the annoying troupes of harem stories, it doesn't have those to the level of infuriating you...its just mildly here and there.

And Hyouka has an anime BTW.
