Summary of the plot as below and i will answer queries if any. MC is Gong, ML is Shou Spoiler Story start with MC finish the funeral rites for his master/teacher and going home to his family. On the way he gave a bowl of clean pastries to ML (9yrs old beggar). ML follow MC on the carriage although MC people try to chase ML away. ML father was killed by bandits on the same route MC Is taking so in order to repay ML kindness he follow behind them without food and stay near ML horse at night to guard the horses. ML fell ill during the last night and MC went to the stable and brought him to his room and feed him with medicine. ML then follow MC home as his servant. MC mother has died and his father was not kind to him and his sister. He has another set of half sister and brother from his step mother (Mei furen). Mei Furen bully them and tried to force MC sister to marry her nephew who is a waste and stole MC sister arranged marriage. MC have a row with the family and forced his father to allow him to have control over his sister marriage and his mother drowry (by tricking him) and moved to stay with his maternal grandmother. (ML show his loyalty by willing to poison Mei Furen and even used his life as stake but ML solved all the issue without it) MC maternal side was nobility but due to politics they lost power and wealth. They are still warm towards the siblings and MC bring with him money and help his uncle to restart their grandmother family cosmetics business. In the rural town, MC met with Heng and future Emperor and his new teacher Mr Sui. He also found out about ML ability to do mental maths and both him and his uncle make ML shopkeeper and let him handle a lot of the family business. ML also went with MC to Mr Sui to study and it was there ML understand about homosexual love and that he is in love with MC. (ML start clinging to MC but he does so with the idea he will not let MC know he is in love with him). MC got good relationship with Mr Sui and the Emperor and even aid them with money before moving to the capital to take his exams. By this time his maternal family is already rich and MC is able to afford new house and open a new store in the capital. There was political issue involved as Mr Sui, Heng and the Emperor tried to get the old Emperor to make Emperor the successor as he was exiled due to being framed by the third prince. The old Emperor is aware of this and before his death he did so and also MC help by getting his family friend a military general to assist them. MC realized ML is in love with him when ML confessed during a sleep talk as they were sharing a bed. MC then realised how much ML has sacrificed for him, earning money and not even taking a single cents, running the household and caring for him and his sister. MC promised ML that he will openly love him once his sister is married as he do not want to spoil her marriage chances. But before that due to his stepmother trick his maternal grandmother and MC to protect ML even gave up his chance for the exam and scared his maternal grandmother. This forced the grandmother to accept them and ML to accept that MC really love him. A number of things happening and MC get his revenge on his family and he gave up his official post and left with ML to live away from the capital. I like how in this story it shows that homosexual love is not easy and in a very realistic way i.e Mr Sui, MC latest teacher is actually in love with Liang King (Emperor father) and to raise the Emperor he live for another 20 years. And once he get his revenge he commit suicide MC and ML was there and MC was trying to stop him and even got injured. Mr Sui told MC they are alike and he should understand he is suffering all these time. MC let him go and MC also realised what is most important to him so he gave up his post after his recovery and settle all issues in capital and leave with ML.
Spoiler A bit background - The third prince frame the crown prince (current emperor father) of revolt (I think) and this resulted in the death of Heng family, MC maternal family (with a few exceptions and loss of wealth) and the death of Emperor family except for him. So they all have a common enemy and all study under Mr Sui Sister married Heng which is the envy of a lot of people as Heng due to his relationship with the Emperor got a good post and as he is an orphan that mean MC sister is mistress straight away. Stepmother revenge is multiple steps as the step mother keep on trying to harm them. MC first send to pretty maids to his cousin. His cousin was supposed to married his sister but stepmother manipulate and resulted in the marriage fall to his half sister (step mother daughter) instead. Then he send a maid to his half sister who teach her to pretend to be pregnant and when half sister is found out there is a big issue at the in laws. He manipulate the situation as he know his father is very concern about his reputation so he ruin / damage his father reputation via his step mother. His final revenge come in the downfall of his stepmother family from power and throw her family (father, uncle and nephew) in jail. HIer father was found guilty of crime and her nephew caused the death of a father / daugher as he tried to rape the girl (which he normally did and was protected by his dad/grandda) and his father for covering up the crime. MC ruined her family and reduce the wealth in the same way as it befall his maternal family. His father lost a lot of reputation and power in court as the emperor is on MC side. Emperor also took the opportunity to clean court and MC father is one of them. Stepmother family when in the jail threaten MC father to help them or else (as they did a crime of salt smuggling? together in the past) and this was found by the Emperor people. Emperor asked MC how he want to deal with his dad and MC said let him live but take away his post and make him pay 10 mln. MC is aware stepmother and father do not have 10mln, his aim is to bankrupt them and forced them to sell the manor to obtain his mother ancestor tablet. After that MC don't care about them but MC father later got stroke due to MC half sister and become paralyzed and they do not have enough money to treat him. MD dont bother about them and just leave with ML to another town to live.
Step mother would want to do it but father is too thin faced to do so. And he forbid step mother from doing it. Step mother first try to reconcile with them when they first return to get access to more wealth but when MC cause her to look bad in front of the father she grew scared of MC. MC tricked her into sending her people to MC store to get goods but MC arrange for his housekeeper to stop them. And call the authorities saying they stole his things. This cause s ruckus and anger MC father as he told her only to see if MC will come back and specifically not to be after MC wealth. As he feel ashamed and proud to go after MC wealth as the source was his late wife family whom he betrayed. This is just one of the way MC trick his stepmother

A) The mother in law is their aunt (MC father younger sister) and from beginning she like MC and MC sister and had been grooming and developing relationship between MC sister and her son as she like and want MC sister as her daughter in law. She and her son was against this marriage but they have to yield to family pressure. Both work in the back against step sister. B) The marriage moved to half sister because of her mother maternal family (Mei) as the Zheng (MC aunt in laws) was just interested in increasing their influence via the Mei. When the Mei fell due to MC the half sister no longer has any value. C) MC also stir up the situation when he send the maid to teach the wrong things. D) half sister herself is spoilt and does not understand how to protect herself or provide good opinions to her in law E) the husband had a few maids that are also his bed companions and one of them is cunning During her first day the husband did not sleep with her and she was laughed by the maid and create a ruckus by public punish the maid. And when she was punish she got annoy n complain to the mom. Ran back home and she met with MC spy maid who teach her to pretend to be pregnant to get her in laws to come and get her back. She enjoy the life as she get pamper but her mother in law already suspected she is lying and forbid her son to sleep with her on the excuse of protection for baby. Later she pretend she lost the baby and tried to blame her mother in law for it. Mother in law get an expert doctor to prove she was never pregnant and this blow up in her face and caused her to be punished Later after Mei family collapsed the maid got pregnant and she plotted and succeeded in causing a miscarriage. The mother in law and son took the opportunity to have a separation with her and tempt her mother to agree to it by allowing them to take back all of her drowery. Step sister later caused her father to have a stroke by arguing with her father as she is unhappy with her divorce and she snipped at her father saying he is living off her as it is her drowery that currently support the family. Spoiler MC gave to ML his lock which was given to him by his mother (it is a pendant that they are supposed to wear till 12 to protect their life). MC give ML material stuff like house, clothes and shop so that if anything happen to him ML will be secure. At one point when MC was very sick and dying, he wrote a letter to his uncle (he hid it from ML) to give ML all his goods and to take care of ML. But ML when he found the letter said he will not live if MC is dead. MC at one time even pluck all the blossoms at his manor to make into pillows for ML. ML comments the trees will look bare but MC do not care saying they will regrow next year.
Due to the age of ML? The settings in this story is ancient time where by age 14 people are expected to have gotten marriage. MC did not snu with ML even when he realized ML like him until ML is older and his body can take it. Mentally ML is older as he was abandoned by his stepmom at a young age to the streets.
