If the cover looks like a bland generic novel, I quit.
If the cover has only a girl(s) in it, and the protagonist is male, I quit.
If the synopsis says nothing, I quit.
    If I dislike the tags/genre, I quit.
If the novel has 4+ digit chapters, I quit.
If the novel has 2+ updates per day, I quit. (Yes, fast updates just overwhelm me. Daily updates are my limit, I prefer weekly or monthly though)

If none of the above criteria were met, the novel is either moved to a reading list of stuff I'll read later or I start the novel on the spot if I have some time available atm.

I'll pick it up if it: has gore, has bl, has romance, is game themed, transmigration, rebirth/revenge, male yandere, is updated at least once a week, 2 weeks at most
Will not pick up if: yuri, harem, the translation is just started or if it hasn't updated in 4+ months, has more than 2000 chapters, has the tag "rape victim becomes lover"

I filter 2 things out: Yaoi, Qidian
On the main page sometimes I click on titles that sound interessting.
Other times I go to the series rankings and search for Kr or Jp novels.

If it's a non-genderbender yuri and it doesn't show signs of being lolicon or rape porn, I'll read it. That includes futanari yuri.

I'll pass over all harem, ecchi, male protagonist seinen or shounen, and most things with the "rape" tag.

I'm picky about BL and other novels. I'll check the cover, tags and description first. If it looks like a low-quality CEO or historical romance, or a badly written mpreg story, I'll reject it.
Even if those bits look okay, I'll check the reviews. I seem to be one of those rare few who don't ignore reviews praising the work? I'll start with the low reviews to get some insight into why I might hate it, then I work my way up to the ones that are gushing about it. Even though people have different tastes, if someone is praising a very fluffy and tooth-rotting romance that I'm not in the mood for, that's useful advice to leave that novel alone.

If a novel has lots and lots of chapters and the story doesn't interest me enough to crack it open the second I see it... Well, it will probably sit waiting in a "To Read" list for a long time.

    1. First thing I check is genre. Does it conform to my current mood?
    2. I read the synopsis next just to check the general feel of the novel.
    3. Next is number of translated chapters and frequency of updates. I don't want to invest time in something that won't get finished in my lifetime.
    4. Next is translator group. There are some groups that I avoid, and some novels I pick up solely because a group is translating them, not because of brand loyalty but because I know quality/updates are guaranteed.
    5. Reviews are also a good source of information, I check both positive and negative reviews to get an average view on the novel.
I don't always follow these rules, sometimes I see an interesting title, click on it, check the synopsis, and then start reading.

So true, like with bad reviews if you get a long one means there was something that motivated the person to rant about it. Give you good idea on the major faults of the novel (they might be overblown but at least stated) Then decide if its something idc about or its something I want to stay away from for sure.

If it's not already on one of my reading lists, don't read it, unless it lights a fire in me :blobReach: (My backlog is long. And my lists continue to grow despite this rule... )
Or if I want to pass some time without getting invested, and it looks like a lukewarm, shallow story good for that, then I can ignore the rule.

Weak rules bro, you might as well read just about anything here.
