    Well spending some time explaining is probably for the best. It takes a very good author to throw a reader into an unknown situation with a high learning curve and expect them to come out anything but confused (or it's a first person story so it's not as essential). So an occasional small info-dump is probably necessary. But showing as opposed to telling is indeed always better
