And before someone else feel obliged to point it out... yeah yeah yeah, they're not chinese manga, they're "manhua".

Anyway, I don't really read that much manga these days, but every once in a while I read a bit of some random mangas, and I've come to notice in particular how in the last year or two there's been a huge influx of chinese ones.

Now that's not necessarily a bad thing, though basically every manga adaption I've seen has been trash.

Douluo Dalu, TDG, Stellar Transformations, Coiling Dragon, Battle Through the Heavens, etc. etc. they've all been terrible as far as I'm concerned. (One notable exception is Daoist Gu/Gu Daoist Master/Reverend Insanity's manga, so far it has stayed true to the original novel, and I'm really liking it btw.)

But recently there's been a lot of these mangas that don't seem to be adapted from novels, though it could be that they just haven't been translated so nobody knows about them...

But anyway, along with the flood of chinese mangas, I've noticed that the translations seem to be mediocre at best.

Here's an example which I thought was a bit funny (from a manga called "The Boy in the All-Girls School"):

I keep seeing "principle" instead of "principal", and decided to just google the words:

And I just found that funny...

p.s. and for the record, literally every panel was riddled with grammatical errors.

Here's another funny panel (even though it's obviously not meant to be funny):

Both the semi-racism and mid-east instead of middle east...

You are obviously pronouncing it wrong

    It is like psychologist

Hahaha I have similar issues but it is with subtitles.
After learning a bit of Korean, Japanese and Chinese
I can now tell that the subtitles are wrong a lot
No surprise since Viki is essentially wikipedia for subtitles

Well, such problems happen when there is no editor to help, or the editor is too lazy to help, unless, it was an intended mistake meant as a joke (for example to figure out if there are any grammar nazis amongst the readers :blobsmirk:)

Now that you mention it, I used to watch a lot of wuxia. Sometimes the subtitles would seem quite odd, I wonder if I would be able to notice what's wrong these days.

one. they're not lying about middle east being a risk place.
two. the mid-east part seems like a lazy cut from the translator. 天方 middle east. literally that's all there is to it. so blame the tl for that part

That's what happens when the translator isn't great with english and doesn't have someone better to double check.

I can't really say, but it might be happening more often lately. I saw one the other day where it was bad enought that you couldn't tell what the meaning was behind it anymore. Luckily there is a free official version to read for that one, which I've been reading, but I came across the non-official version and took a look and it's got sentences like:

"Became aware of its power limit on arbitrating and interventing, council comes to a conclusion to use part of Gadean dept into saving Vanean."
    vs the official version:
"The U.C.S. knew its limits in mediating and intervening, so their solution was to have Kadesh pay off their planetary debt by selling Barnean captives."

Depends on which part of the middle East he's going to. If he's going to Saudi Arabia or Qatar or the UAE he's pretty safe the place is pretty stable also for the moment but if heads to yemen,sSyria,Iraq or conflict zones it's a different matter. A fact there's 100s of thousands of migrants in the middle East working on everything from oil to construction to service industries.

Currently theres a generation that is not interested in translating. Only consuming content.

It be great if there was a new generation of translators that would provide content. But in this era, that is not feasible. Because this line of work, isnt lucrative and critics can be harsh.

People have become accustomed to MTL as a means to get their novel fix.
