So you like Glokta then? Though I'm not even certain if Antihero is the word for him. He's a weird fellow to describe.

And I refuse to discuss ATG beyond saying it's not worth reading. I've been drawn into ATG discussions too many times before and they always leave me annoyed in the end

Not sure who Glokta is. Tarrant is one of the best characters in fantasy, or is it really scifi, literature. He's both a hero and a villain. I bought the first book in paperback and have the last book of that series in hardback, because I wasn't willing to wait for it come out in paperback.

Friedman followed in the steps of Andre Norton and seriously twisted the boundaries between science and magic with that series. That's part of what drew me into the series. Then the way she built the relationships and conflicts between Damian, Tarrant, and morality makes it one of the best portrayals of the similarities between heroes and villains that has ever been written.

I believe the major difference here is that Meng Hao didn't go out of his way to kill those that didn't harm him. He spared many and even let them join his tribe. While Yun Che literally killed everyone, except that one guy he conveniently spared...although you wouldn't be wrong by saying the corrupt arrogance of the burning heaven sect may have lead to the injust death of many others, can you honestly say they were ALL bad?

I'm fine with Yun Che massacring the sect now, BTW. Just felt like the difference between Meng Hao and Yun Che should be made clear~

atg: put on hold until i can binge and skip the lecherous asshole scenes (stroking with all his might...)
pmg: on hold for pile up since i like it better when reading a lot at once. chapter for chapter gets annoying after a few
csg: reading up to date. stabbing is not working on the higher levels so no more of that in the foreseeable future (no more throat at least)

Ah, Inquisitor Glokta can be described as a crippled torturer with good intentions. Logan Ninefingers from the same series is also relatively scarred and definitely an antihero. The series is the First Law by Joe Abercrombie which is a dark fantasy series where basically all the POVs are basically anti-heroes.

From the rabid Political Correctness generated hate in the 1star Goodreads reviews, it looks like it might be an interesting series. Certainly better than reading about Porn Che.

even if they aren't all bad the "bad" ones he killed may be someone a "good" person respects or admire.
so even if a good person's teacher is a devil then that stupid will take revenge and when that revenge happens it will affect the MC's friends and family.

and that major difference you mention means nothing. the burning heaven sect kidnapped his family and if his little aunt wasn't lucky enough to have a decent person protect her a bit when she was kidnapped she wouldve been rapped before yun che could save her. remember that the person who tried to rape little aunt was the son of the sect leader i believe? so even if his son was the devil himself his father would take revenge and dont naively think his family would be spared from that. Then if yun che kills the sect leader you really think the entire sect would sit back and take it? even if they do people who are close to the sect leader will take reveng and one again don't naively think his family will be spared from their revenge.

unlike yun che meng hao doesnt really have a family to protect and those close to him are in a different land. the tribes he let join them are the ones that cant do a thing to meng hao for revenge anyways.
meng hao doesnt like killing but he will kill all those who can bring harm to him and his family which is the same for yun che.

I see your point but I believe he could have used fear tactics to keep people from rebelling. Killing off the major leaders of the sect and instilling fear into the others~

Yun Che could have easily employed the same tactic as Meng Hao. He didn't have to help anyone, but he could have spared many. Although there is a chance of those he spared coming back at him (in fact it seems like that's going to happen) the Bluewind empire isn't that weak. They may not be as strong as the burning heaven sect at full power, but they should be enough to handle a sect half destroyed with it's foundations in ashes.
As long as his friends/family are in the Bluewind Palace they should be protected not only by blue wind but by...I forgot the name...the Heavenly sword sect? The sect that is responsible for protecting the royalty of blue wind. Although they may not offer protection to his little aunt and grandfather...

And you can't forget that him sparing that one dude will probably endanger his family/friends, perhaps not little aunt, but everyone else.

Yun Che strikes me as the more vengeful person.
Again, I don't have a problem personally with Yun Che massacring the sect, but I do wish he killed everyone instead.

Not an antihero though. He is a great character, but he definitely falls on the side of the hero protagonist. And i like Tarrant better and think he's better written as well, though Hobb is better with emotional writing with Fitz.

And I never really read CSG, only around 20 chapters that I didn't particularly like with no sign of better from all the commenters, but now I might more seriously read it.

the whole purpose of killing all of those in the heavenly burning sect is to not let any potential disaster to come to his way and his family and friends but he destroyed that purpose when he spared that 1 guy who can really be a potential disaster >>

I stop reading ATG for now and I'll wait till the next arc before picking it up again.

CSG is getting good with his new stuff and him returning home

while PMG i'm just waiting for the whole tournament arc to end before deciding to drop it or continue

Compared to sparing thousands of people revenge vs 1 person revenge there is a lot of difference actually.

He wasn't worried about them coming at him, don't forget that he was originally trying to avoid conflict several times and gave BHC numerous ways out until they crossed his final line by taking his grandpa and aunt as hostages in order to threaten him.
He was worried about them being used again, and thus went out of his way to make an example out of BHC.
Now his enemies will have to think twice before acting against his family when it's not just their own becks that they're putting on the line if they were to go for Yun Che's Family.

That being said though, I think that there's quite a few valid reasons other than this. (Dropping ATG because Yun Che is ruthless and kill when necessary is hypocritical rubbish.) Like for example if you're so concerned about your family that you would exterminate an entire clan to not take ANY chances, why would you leave this Juechen who would have the greatest enmity of them all alive???:mad:

That basically made the entire previous point (Which was very much reasonable imho and not surprising at all looking from Yun Che's point of view.) greatly diminish or become moot even. Because your aunt which you love so much asked you to do it, fucking really? Yeah, well as an example: I don't think you would let your 2 years old kid eat that toxic substance they found on the ground no matter how much they want to because you know what's best for them.
I really don't see how Lingxie's wishes could suddenly take priority over her own well being.
Yun Che has shown that he's all about making the hard decisions in the favor of what he consider more important before (And after) this happened which is why this isn't only f***ing stupid, it's also very much out of character from my impression of him...

And then as a ATG MTLer who is keeping up to the latest raws (chapter 603 as of today) there's quite a few other things that could very well warrant a shelving of ATG. And if one of these key things don't take a turn for the better when I'm expecting it too (which has already dragged on much longer than I thought) then even as an "avid fan" of ATG I might join the dropout ranks in the near future...

Fitz is a good character, but despite being an assassin, he's not even close to an antihero. Fitz is more of a chivalrous bastard than anything. Even though her books about Fitz and the Fool are good, I don't think Hobb has the mindset to write a good antihero. She's too much of a straight up, standard mold, hero writer. She tries to put twists on the standard hero model, but the three Fitz series is her only successes. I don't like the rest of her work and really hate the preachy feel of the Soldier Son trilogy.

Altough the decision to let Juechen off isn't wise at all , its far more understandable given who asked it.
@NoveLuber Juechen wasn't good at all , only reason he protected Lingxi was because his schlong was doing the thinking.
