Hi, this is my first post on the NUF, I have read all the rules, but if there's something that slips my notice then my apologies.

    1) I'm interested in translating Yaoi/BL web novels into English, is there any restrictions against the display of adult content? Websites like WattPad have regulations that do not allow authors to post erotica, while some other sites seem to be a bit relaxed on this, allowing some "adult content" but not "erotica". Am I subjected to any restriction regarding adult content if I post on a WordPress-based blog? Apart from putting up a warning, what else do I have to do?

    2) What exactly is the difference between adult content and erotica? Is it mostly based on the proportion such content takes up in the whole novel, or the degree of explicit-ness in diction? Nearly all of my contact with adult content comes from Yaoi novels, so not quite sure how the wider community of Yaoi readers here would receive them. Some of the works I want to translate are not main arc +m/m sexual relationships but romance with adult content. I have seen people translating novels that I found rather explicit when first reading them, but it's always better to make sure what the boundaries are.

Any help & advice & readers' feedback will be greatly appreciated!

Sorry, I'm still a bit lost--so there are some erotic novels on this group you linked above, and I saw some adult manga under one of the tabs. Does that mean if I put up a website containing a similar degree of adult content in it (with warning against underage readers), that should also be fine?

    Hi there, welcome to NUF!
Yeah, the important thing is to post a clear warning for mature/18+ content on either the website or on the specific posts containing such content. Wordpress is not really as restricted as Wattpad; Wattpad needs to keep up a clean reputation to advertise to its younger readers, while Wordpress is just a blog platform. If I remember correctly, you can even mark your website as containing mature content in the settings somewhere.

As for the distinction between mature content and erotica... well, it's really easy to define if you've read enough of both haha >__< I'd say that it is about the explicitness of the descriptions, and how long the particular scenes are. If the scene goes into extreme detail and lovingly describes every part of the act, you're definitely reading some porn. If it keeps some of the physical acts vague and focuses on the emotional aspect of the characters, then it's probably leaning toward the "explicit content but not erotica" side. Most CNs I've seen don't contain actual erotica, as they're written in metaphor or are very brisk about it - for example, Legendary Master's Wife has explicit scenes but they're fairly short and to the point.

I guess another rule of thumb is: If you're able to cut out an entire scene of mature content and have the story continue exactly the same, with the character development unchanged, then that's an erotica scene. If you would be missing out on the characters' changing feelings, or a plot point, then it's not just erotica. (Though, you can also have very plotty and very explicit erotic scenes, but in that case the entire story is probably based on the entire concept of interesting erotica...)

In any case, if you're translating a story with a lot of mature scenes then you can simply mention that in the series introduction. That way anyone who reads will come in expecting that, so there won't be any issue. Communication and proper story tagging are always key! :blobphone:

You don't have to worry about not being able to get readers by having too much explicit content. Statistically those stories tend to get more hits. It's a, uh, fascinating topic for most people... :sweating_profusely: so, good luck!

Welcome to NU and danmei community !

I'm not familiar with wordpress, so I can't give any opinion regarding regulations there, but if it's about the story itself, just put some warning at the beginning of the story (or at the index page) and you'll be fine! The rest of your questions have been answered rather nicely by Ars-san above I think.

Oh, and no need to worry about readers, danmei aka yaoi definitely has a huge loyal fanbase including me.
Anyway, good luck on your translation, I'm looking forward to it!
p/s: Can you spoil me what's the title of the novel you are considering to translate?

Tumblr allows r18 content, including porn. However, if your content is mature you will not rank well in Google. This isn't really a problem since most traffic will come from NU but you might get annoyed if the copy-paste websites rank higher than your Tumblr for your translation.

If you are struggling to look for a place to post your translation, an easy way to do it is to ask Ainushi to host your project. I host my R18 chapters on their website.

TL;DR - I post my G/PG-rated stuff on my own blog. R18 chapters are posted in Ainushi and Tumblr.

Yayy another yaoi translator. Join us in the Danmei Room, check out our BL spoiler threads, and enjoy your stay in NUF!

As for your question: I find it a lot easier to just have someone else post your translations. That's mainly because I'm lazy and don't really care if people read what I've translated or not. Also, I'm the type who doesn't bother looking at comments.

If you're asking about how to have your translations linked on NU, then just make sure you tag them properly. https://www.novelupdates.com/list-tags/ lists all the tags; hover your mouse over a tag to read the definitions. Also, you can write that it's smutty in the novel summary.

I consider erotica to be smut-centered novels (like Snow White and the 7 Lovers), while adult content would be if the novel prioritizes story/characters over the sexy-times. NU doesn't have a specific definition for this (nor is it listed on the tags), so take my words with a grain of salt.

Hey Ars! Thanks for answering my questions! Now I think I have a better idea of the distinction. The CNs we are currently working on are probably not very similar to stories like LMW and a bit more explicit haha, but we will definitely try to work out the warnings and tags first (and find that mature content warning option on WordPress--thanks for mentioning that! I think I saw a similar warning page on blogs hosted by Google but was not sure about WordPress.)

Greetings Ayshadow! Thanks for the warm welcome and your interest in our projects! >< As we are still quite early in the process and may change the titles later if we come up with better translations, I'll hide them under a spoiler for now:
Don't Know How to Repay My Life Saver, by retrospect, My Wobbly Roomie Loves Crying in My Lap, by Ta Zai Shao, and Once You Slept With Your Decade-Long Rival by Tao Qian Sui.

Hi readerz! Thanks so much for letting me know about this website! Looks like we will definitely need that sooner or later lol

Hi XD, thanks for answering my questions! As mentioned above, we are still quite early in the process and looking for the most suitable platform, so having our works hosted by another platform will definitely be an option! I have not heard of Snow White and the 7 Lovers before, but judging by a quick glance that's actually a very enlightening example. I think CN yaoi fans do have a somewhat equivalent distinction applicable here so problem solved!

There is a specific definition on NU for each genre, check the Genre Explanation.
