Okay, listen up. Every Omegaverse story is different and works slightly differently. The Japanese do seem to have homogenized somewhat how their Omegaverse stories work by providing the illustrations mentioned by @caffeinefocus, and Chinese ABO stories also seem fairly homogenized, but in the West, where the genre started, there is still a great deal of variety of how Omegaverse works.

Now let me explain it this way: in almost every story, the people we think of as like us are Betas. Neither Alphas nor Omegas should be considered structurally similar to us. One reason is that in the West, many Alphas and Omegas are werewolves. Which is likely how the genre started out.

In most Western stories, Alphas, regardless of primary gender, have knots. In Japanese and Chinese stories, I’ve never seen this feature mentioned. In most stories in general, Alphas can go into rut, usually triggered by an Omega’s heat.

Omegas are capable of going into heat. Male Omegas are equipped with wombs. In many stories, Omegas take suppressants to suppress their heat. (Most likely a metaphor for birth control.)

Why is this genre so popular? Personally, I find it at it’s most interesting when it explores gender inequality through the lens of these secondary genders. It’s similar to how racial inequality is often explored through the use of aliens. That isn’t to say that there isn’t plenty of Omegaverse that is straight up porn and rape porn, but there are other types of stories out there too. I myself have written an Omegaverse story that plays with the tropes of the genre and tried to promote healthy relationships. So please, don’t dismiss it if you have no idea what you’re talking about.

All the comments I've seen in this thread is less of a rude dismiss and more of a curiousity-filled 'not my cup of tea' laced with some memes tho. But then again, if that what you've seen from our reactions, then behalf of the guys in this thread, I'm sorry.
