They were made after scarlet heart. Scarlet heart (bu bu jin xin) was the first that hit it big with time travel like this. It was also what caused a spike in suicides around that time (due to people wanting to go back in time).

That's why there's no time travel in the new dramas after it got released. Also why they deviate from the novel so much.

But you're right about a lot of dramas not following the novel. I was just talking about whether bu bu jin xin (the drama) followed the novel or not.

But even so, they did not make some changes in the story, they have changed a lot. Princess Wei Young is quite a new story, with new characters, and one or another scene from the book.
And the Chinese drama and movie have different scripts, so I do not know what the book is like, if the drama follows the novel or not ...

The novel is even more tragic than the drama. From what I understand:

In Scarlet Heart, the MC goes back to the present time and meets what seems to be the reincarnation of the ML. In the novel... she dies in the ancient time. Period. MC does not return to life in the present day and it just ends there.

 

More tragedy? Even more than the drama? Which made me sad?

That is just too much! I guess they have to have some sort of ending in the drama which is not too tragic. The novel really is too sad >.<

 

I've watched the Korean version and the Mandarin drama version, both made me very emotional. Of course, both have its plus point but if I were to pick one it would definitely be the Mandarin drama version. I hope someone will pick up where the current translation left off so that I can finally read the epilogue in full. From the brief summary that I read, it shows how much Princess MInMIn loved 13th prince and also how much 14th prince loved Rouxi.

 

Other the ending, I remember the drama was very faithful in following the novel's story arcs and dialogue. But, the drama also showed scenes from other character's perspectives whereas I think the novel only shows the world through Ruo Xi's point of view, so its more limiting in that way. if you're interested in the little extra moments and expanded parts to the existing drama scenes, I think the novel is worth reading.
