From my perspective, it would be a security thing, or health related. Unless the band of the ring expands and contracts with the growth of the member it's going to either A) fall off while the owner is limp, or more likely B) function like most coverings and cut off the return flow of blood back into the vascular system. If the former happens your ring falls off and you stand a good chance of losing it, and if the latter, you're painfully erect and either need to drain the member or cut the band of the ring.
