Be warned that my request for recommendation is related to endings, so there might be spoilers included in this thread. Read on only if you're fine with it.

There are notable stories that didn't end happily, but even if it is sad, it was appropriate in the story's context. Some (or most?) chapters on Kino no Tabi (jp novel) was like this. Paradise Kiss (jp manga) too Then there's A Step into the Past (wuxia novel), Mulberry Song (short story), and Nirvana In Fire (tv drama). In the end, nobody got everything on their wishlist granted. Some of the best characters even might have died. But the end was just as it should; they matched well with the plot and characters and the world construct and everything.

    So I wonder...
Are there any other novels with similar kinds of ending? Manga, TV drama or movies are also fine.

Yeah, i really love kino no tabi and A Step into the Past, a good story that make reader feel the feel, not just a satisfied teenager ending...
Hmm, i'm a little confused to what should i recommend you since your request is unusual and hard to find...

Korean Drama: Autumn in My Heart (2000)

When I first watched that drama, it made me cry several time. The story was so sad. So I took upon myself to share this wonderful tear-jerking drama with my family and my friends. It made them cry too. They all hated me afterward, hahaha.

I wanna recommend Rewrite but it's a VN. The true route is great though. Having friend die, betrayed many people, fighting and kill someone who like a father figure, the world half destroy, etc while the ending is still satisfy with not over the top angst. It also got english patch so you might give it a try. Some of the normal route is a little shounenish, but the true route is really good so don't drop it half way. You could just press ctrl and fast forward anyway.

Well a word of warning that Rewrite take a lot of time to play through, but i too strongly recommend rewrite. At first i play it for the romance factor, but after playing through some of the routes i just wanted to continue reading romance or not. The story behind the settings of the world was quite captivating. The voice acting was superb in some parts too. But enough VN reviews.

    Spiral - Suiri no Kizuna
This manga is the one that takes the that the cake, the feels that it invokes are on par with Rewrite or so i feel. I don't see a lot of people mentioning it but i personally recommend if you wanted to feel poignant, Its one of those things after you read , you just sit there feeling and doing nothing,

Heard a lot about them myself. So they're really that good, eh...

I remember reading one or two volumes of Spiral about a decade ago, but then the author quit temporarily or something like that, and so I stopped reading it. Is it already finished now?

Haha, okay, thanks ^^ I've read the book, it was hopeless since the beginning, but there's a sense of "our spirit must not die", really tear-jerker
