Because many people has asked me to do this... I am going to start a series of BL recommendation threads....I have been reading bl for more than ten years and I have read gbs of texts...
Also I think the community's BL taste needs to be shaped... So many of the famous/classic danmei novels are unheard of here! Even though I can't do all of them I hope others can pick them up.

I am an old school fujoshi, so I mostly read BLs more than 3 years ago. Basically no fluffs, no cultivations, no mechas, no transmigrations....etc etc

Well of course I like the novels I translate too. Friends with Benefits, Intense Radical Behaviors, and the Ultimate Past.

Okay, back to the topic. This is gonna be my first recommendation. I make it my first one because @Pyon is going to do a pure smut and I wish he can do this instead.

This Records from the Hehuan Palace is a novel that's 90% smut while stilling having a plot. The uke was a excellent general who's a hermaphrodite. The emperor found out about the secret of his body and wanted to make uke his concubine, but uke refused, coz he's a man of high self-dignity man who wanted to be independent and fight for the country. The emperor threatened him with his parents' lives and forced him to marry him.

The story basically centers around how the emperor and the eunuch(es) serving the emperor trained/tortured the general and made him a submissive sex slave, and how the general tried desperately to preserve his sanity, dignity and free will and tried to escape this fate that's forced upon him. The emperor loved the general, but his obsession was so crazy that it basically destroyed the general.

Battlesong of the General is the vol 2 or sequel, which continues the story in vol1, and it is equally dark and more twisted.

This story includes a lot of BDSM, training, objectifying, public humiliation, torture, male pregnancy, body transformation, pet play, slave training...and tragedy
Vol 1 is BE and Vol 2 is HE, but there are also "bad ending" version sides stories that includes gangbang, public toilet and 20% more of everything mentioned above. (Note: not other man f*cked MC in vol 1 and vol 2, only in the side stories.

Smut: 4.9/5
The best part and the major part of the story. The countless new methods of training they used on the uke were so cruel and so interesting. -0.1 for a tool that's repeatedly used. The language is pretty and consistent with the historical setting.

Plot: 3/5
Enough to keep the story going and there are no major plot holes for a smut. However it is indeed pretty painful to read about such a horrible relationship and the pathetic fate of the general.

Depth: 3.5/5
It's rare that a pure smut story has great depth, that's why I am giving it extra points. Maybe it's not even the intention of the author, but reading about the endless darkness somehow made me thought a lot about free will and gender. If you think of the general as fighting between being a man and being a woman, the story has an extra layer.

There are many parts where he seemed completely broken, and he was so closed to going crazy.......but he's an admirable man and somehow maintained a little bit of his sanity while his bottomline was pushed again and again. Yes he had two twin sons with the emperor.

Let Me Tease You, by I Am A Banana. From what I read when it was still on Fantasy-Books, it was a good read. She now moved. But, I find it's still highly rated, and her releases are quite decent. Furthermore, I think she almost completed the novel.

 

I might recommend some smuts that are not dark in the future~
Someone else has made a thread about 武林盟私密纪事. This is also a very good one. Less smuts, good plots, and not dark.

 

tbh, I already read almost all the translated BL in NUand I'm now crying because I want to read more but idk how to read chinese or to how to even find non-translated ones

*pats* Don't know what to say to that really. The BL section among translations is lackluster in size compared to a lot of other genres. I hope more translators take up some interesting novels.

Although I'm not one to look for BL, if the story is good, the story is good. Period.

 

That's why I'm going to wait. I'm sure people who would like translate BL will appear soon. I hope so.

If this is what you mean by shaping up the community's taste, I'll be fine as an outcast to this community...(so extreme, but really, I'll stay in my corner niche). Well to be fair, this novel is in the true spirit of yaoi - No peak (climax), no fall (punch line/denouement), no meaning (thanks wikipedia). As you said, lots of old school yaoi follows along those lines.

I'm actually happier with the new wave BL - healthier, more consent, more romance and love. It's what I personally prefer to read. BDSM is one thing, but rape and abuse don't equate to it. Even if I'm no fan, I can handle BDSM, but the torture - nah. Words like public toilet, sex slave, cum dumpster, immediately turn me off.

I won't try telling others what they should or shouldn't enjoy reading. For me, I'll treat this title as porn of the icky variety and I'll stay away from it~ I'll stick to my vanilla smut.

 

I'm all for vanilla smut lol. Het or BL, I like 1v1 with fluff and consent. And romance. Running out of het romance novels was how I got into BL lol.
