In addition, the very first pinned post is "Suggestions for must-read novels," which is somewhat akin to this post.

 

Eh, yaoi is supposed to be used only for porn. As in, pure smut with no story. I don't know why Western fans insist on using yaoi. I myself prefer to use BL. And even if a BL work has some smut, it's still BL since yaoi is only for porn. I use yaoi now since everyone is using it as synonymous with "gay stuff" but properly speaking it's for gay porn stuff.

 

I'm starting to prefer BL as a term these days, especially since I associate it with more romantic stories now.

But there are also yaoi manga that do have a story and not just smut. So I can't simply equate the things. Although it's guaranteed that there'd be sex if it's yaoi. If it's the hardcore subcategory, then that's pretty much (often nice-looking) (usually female-friendly) gay porn in pictures without too much plot. Then there's manga like Saezuru tori wa habatakanai, Rouge (by Katsura Komachi), Kouun no Rihatsushi, and many others that I really can't ask my lame brain to recall the titles of, where the stress is on the romance and story development (though the smut is good too, when it happens).

I dunno though, I'd rather not be too restrictive with what words to use.

 

Historically yaoi is what the hardcore slash/ gay doujins were called. They were made by females for other female fans. Anything professionally published wouldn't even be called yaoi. Also, the reason they were created was because the mainstream works at that time (and even now?) don't actually have real sex scenes. Just a kiss and then blurry "what boy part is this" or upper body stuff only, lol. And, of course, then (just like now) there are always thirsty fujoshis/fudanshis who wanna see the naughty bits. And I don't blame them.

 

Sigh... And still the censoring takes all the fun away. (and created job positions such as dick redrawer...) I guess doujins is the way to go.

 

I recently read a phenomenal K doujin. The art and writing were topnotch even though it was a yaoi doujin. There are a lot of gems around but you have to wade through a ton of crap to find it. And most are not translated.
