For me, the show peaked in eps 3-16 and later again in eps 33-40. Ending was a lackluster, and was pretty much saved by a-yuan & wwx reunion scene. The ending itself was so convoluted it took away from enjoyment, but I've come to terms with it. It really could have been much more awful.

To the 'Everyday is Everyday' chapter, and a kind soul @bigbadredpanda have translated this on Tumblr, to that scene (I'm glad I got myself a copy to that reprinted version!) And just reading this... Omg the editing to this CQL Wangxian is amazing!!! The Papapa scene caught me off guard And how Lan Zhan jumped down the cliff after Wei Ying is just! Since that's how I imagine the real Lan Zhan is like!
Some persistent elements I noticed in CQL's story are: 1. people getting hurt when they were young, then that hurt / anger festers over the years until they reach adulthood and everything blows over. XY (candy) and JGY (father/family recognition) are obvious examples, Su She (inferior complex) to some extent. On a more positive spin where familial or close ties are formed early on which then becomes stronger (or at least become key plots) later in the story - JC (Twin Heroes of Yunmeng), LWJ (probably he promised himself to never ever let WWX go after the latter fell off the cliff, 16 years ago), ShiJie / WQ (protecting their little brothers), etc. I feel there's this theme of "karmic cycle" throughout CQL... It seems only WWX was clearly heard (at least twice, I counted) tell others that "it's OKAY to let go of the past because it probably doesn't matter anymore at present". At some point, he even says that he's willing to not pursue those issues further or get to the root cause, because "what's the point?" etc. 2. people badmouthing, gossiping and talking behind each other's backs. For obvious reasons and with even more obvious consequences, and it happens all over CQL's story more than the number of times people cross swords with one another. Moral of the story: 1. Be able to let go of the past. Don't hold grudges, don't act on revenge, don't pursue past issues coz karma's gonna bite back. 2. Don't talk bad of others or spread rumours, don't engage in bullying. Sounds like a socialist message hidden underneath there... Thanks for the explanations. You're right, by prohibiting death/rebirth themes, CQL's story becomes weaker because it would be super badass to actually see WWX using dead bodies to fight back as fierce corpses. So far it feels like people are "poisoned", grow black lines on their necks and have their eyes turn black... Oh what I'd do to see NMJ coming back to life as a super fierce corpse, chase after JGY and scare the shit out of that bastard child during the Guan Yin temple scene... AHHHH.. it's THAT GUY The one that betrayed LWJ and caused Wen Ruohan to be able to get hold of the magical iron piece from Gusu Lan... Really?? I didn't feel LWJ falling in love with WWX during the detention. I mean showing the homo drawing is one thing, but being pestered and annoyed daily couldn't possibly translate into romantic feelings... I think? Even when they started their adventures outside of Gusu Lan, it felt like they were travelling companions than having lovey-dovey feelings from LWJ's side I think the vomit-blood scene in Xuanwu cave was probably the first major turning point for LWJ to start seeing WWX in a more positive light... but not much more... If nothing else, probably the 16-year wait was what turned LWJ's feelings towards WWX from "bros/'soulmates' adventuring and fighting evil together" to "I'm gonna protect my boyfriend and soon-to-be-wife coz I'm his true soulmate" What a slow burn love !!! I think the Olay ad mentioned about being whiter than Gusu Lan's rabbits, being a skin-whitening product. The cup noodles ad had a "wo xi huan" ("I like..."), so it's a call back to the confession scene THAT WE NEVER GOT TO SEE NOR HEAR IN CQL. Oh, you're right! The masked man !!! Now I remember... thanks The bts comment about how Yibo's hair looks like a Bamboo shoot is so true. I couldn't un-see it, after watching that bts clip... I liked how Yibo's long wig frames his slender face well, making him look "beautiful" (as in feminine or divine terms) while WWX's wig tends to make him a good-looking wuxia/xianxia male lead hero. But the number of times I see Yibo trying to arrange or shake off his wig hair in the bts clips.. I can imagine how uncomfortable or ticklish it feels to have long hair flowing down your neck & back, if he's never acted in wuxia/xianxia shows, and if he's always had short hair all his life... I guess this makes CQL a R-18 hetero show, totally passing censorship despite having strong bromantic undertones. I secretly wish the CQL team could get Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo to play-pretend and act out a romantic scene from the MDZS novel. I really need something more tangible than loving gazes and wrist grabs
Watch that MV I shared earlier, here it is again And you'll be blessed I also wish the same for CQL but we can't always get what we want in adaptation due to strict censorship sadly. That's why in the overall, I recommend reading the novel since you will get so much more in the novel which CQL couldn't give us You can always read the novel and imagine it as CQL version of the characters (Xiao Zhan and Yibo as Wangxian) even though for me I have the donghua in my mind when reading the novel (since they was my first impression)
Some CQL questions from my side.. sorry if these were asked before or if they're silly questions: 1. Even after reading a few posts here related to WWX's Golden Core and Suibian, I'm still a bit confused . Can anyone help to fill the blanks: 16 years ago: WWX gave away his GC. A GC identifies its owner to the sword (like an ID card, correct?). So without a GC, basically Suibian will not respond to WWX anymore, and the blade cannot be pulled out from the scabbard. 16 years later:WWX, in MXY's body, is able to pull out Suibian's blade out of the scabbard because....? But WWX is not able to wield Suibian properly (he can only swing it about weakly, that's all), because....? 2. Occasions where there are medium cross-overs of CQL and other forms of MDZS: CQL x donghua: the cup noodle ad CQL x novel: ending credit scene mentions a word of thanks to MXTX novel author bts interview where Wang Yibo mentions he's worried that he doesn't live up to the LWJ from the novel CQL x manhua: none? CQL x audio drama: none? If there are other occassions for cross-overs, please share (imagines a fic where Wang Yibo!LWJ actually picking up a cup noodle at the restaurant, finds himself staring at Donghua!WWX on the packaging, then magically gets transported into MDZS Donghua universe like an isekai anime........ What will happen to our beloved Han Guang Jun? Will Donghua!WWX come and save him? How will the two meet? Stay tuned for the episode.... *bzzzt*) btw, Lan SiZhui slurrrrping on cup noodles sounded really yummy.... 3. Who's left in the aftermath? At the start of the story, 16 years ago: Wen (strongest / most aggressive, headed by the old bearded man with wild hair whose name I've forgotten..) Jin (already rich, headed by playboy JGS) Nie (headed by NMJ) Lan (headed by LQR) Jiang (headed by Jiang Fengmian) 16 years later: Wen is gone (except WN and later, LSZ) Jin (still rich, headed by JGY) Nie (headed by I Don't Know NHS) Lan (still headed by LQR, and please add WWX into this family, thankyouverymuch ) Jiang (poor foreveralone JC is the only one left from the trio) At the end of the story: Jin (after JGY's death, probably another Jin relative will step up... I hope it's not that fat uncle that always badmouths everyone. Jin Ling is too young to take the mantle...) Nie (probably NHS will continue to lead this clan) Lan (LWJ, the new head of cultivators and also leader of the Lan clan. I can see now why he has to part with WWX if he holds these important positions. Allies: Ouyang clan, WWX as Yiling Laozu when he returns to LWJ (I hope!) Jiang (still foreveralone JC will lead this clan, maybe with Jin Ling's help) Others: Su She's clan (some survived, right?) - probably will distance away further from Lan clan after Su She's death Please share your thoughts or if I missed any clans... I had about a couple of hours to kill before bedtime, so I binged the Donghua S2 eps1-3 with english subs. Thank god I didn't go with the raws because there were plenty of good technical explanations that will be lost in translation with my weak chinese fluency... Having not read the novel, just finished CQL, and it has been a while since the last season of the donghua... S2 feels like a fresh new take with new adventures for Wangxian I'm painfully reminded of how badass WWX is with his magic and skills... the animation and character movements are absolutely A M A Z I N G and the red eyes OH MY GOD HOW I MISSED WEI YING WITH EVIL RED EYES I don't know why people say these episodes are like "fillers"... I've no idea about the 'Huaicang Hills' and the plot is significantly different from CQL, so it seems like the story is progressing as usual with each piece of the puzzle getting solved, albeit feeling a bit rushed. Ahhh.. if only I can copy-paste all those wonderful visual effects and fighting moves to CQL, that would be a fan's ultimate dream come true All those red, black and blue smoke / waves, energy ripples, magical circles etc... seeing WWX and LWJ literally dancing in sync when fighting with their flute-guqin-sword combo - epic, epic, epic !!!! Love the Conetto ad inserts, especially in eps 3 arrival at Qinghe Nie where it cleverly becomes part of the story and not a separate advertisement. Love Fairy scaring WWX jumping into LWJ's arms. Love how LWJ is already 100% matching WWX in terms of thoughts on mystery solving and when fighting evil. It doesn't have to be romance between the two. It's like bros on the battlefield, and I think the donghua shines so well with that even without any BL elements - no need for longing gazes and wrist grabs. Ah, thank you!! I couldn't understand everything that was said, though I'm guessing the editor cut and pasted bits of dialogue lines and re-arranged their meaning, into very suggestive ways...? Why does LWJ sound so breathy and horny in there??
This I try to answer with what I know and remember, forgive me! WWX (in MXY's body) is able to pull out Suibian because it is still WWX's soul. Suibian recognizes WWX (in MXY) thru his soul, while Suibian unseals itself with JC because it recognizes WWX's GC in JC. I read somewhere that to cultivate one's GC, one should use his/her qi, essence, and spirit. So WWX's GC in JC still contains part of WWX's self, and that's what Suibian recognizes as his master. As for question 2 regarding cross-overs, I'm not that familiar with all MDZS adaptation so that's better left for the MDZS experts. At the end of the story (now, all of these are MY ASSUMPTIONS unless otherwise stated), in the Jin clan, it should be JL who is the next clan leader. He will surely face opposition from relatives who have the power and influence. It's highly possible that Jin and Jiang will form a 'formal' alliance, with JC supporting and defending his nephew to secure his position (that is of course, unless JL himself doesn't want to lead the Jins). NHS will continue to lead the Nie clan. I read one posted that in the novel NHS became the chief cultivator? This I don't know, I don't remember it anymore. But I really prefer NHS to step off the limelight. That's why I like it in CQL that he verbally told WWX that he is not interested in the position. NHS has what it takes to be the next JGY, so I hope that he won't expose himself to further corruption. He got his revenge, I truly hope that he stops with his scheming. I miss the naive NHS I believe LXC is the most possible to be the next chief cultivator, however, the novel states that he went in seclusion because of JGY's death.... ===== In CQL, it's sort of hinted that Xue Yang may have been a descendant of the Xue clan, who first used demonic cultivation on the Yin Metal. XXC, is a disciple of Baoshan San Ren (master of WWX's mother). I don't remember him having any blood relatives. Song Lan, I think is an orphan, who was raised in a temple. A-Qing is an orphan. Cangse San Ren is WWX's mother.

@fangirl79 The Huaicang Hills doesn't appear in the novel that's why I believe most of the viewers consider these episodes fillers (me included when I watched them raw). After watching with subtitles I think their intention was to fill in some plot holes from the novel. It felt kind of rushed though (but at least Jin Ling running into trouble every 5 minutes made me laugh), and more WangXian is always welcome from my part!
So I'm binge watching some CQL BTS vids because I found a playlist that are english subbed already, and encountered this vid about what the charas will bring when they are stranded on an island... And I'm just amazed (and amused!) by their answers because it really reflects their chara's personalities, like wow, these actors really study their chara. Like for Xue Yang, XXC is enough. Shijie needs a pot to feed his brothers, lol! WN will bring his sis WQ so his sis will solve all their problems <<Wen Ning, you're sooooo adorable >> LXC wants to bring LWJ but he knows LWJ won't come 'cause he'll go after WWX! Next option is to bring JGY along! Liu Haikuan, are you a XiYao shipper?!?! And since I'm only enjoying these vids now, I'm utterly awestruck with JC and LXC actors' real voices! I didn't expect their voices to be soft and sweet, especially JC!!
