actually its the egg. the change in the dna of the new "chiken" is not large enough to cause him to be unable to mate with others "chiken like" but he is still not the same as them. so yeh, the egg. also +1 for the novel pickup...(totally not made this part just to actually have it do something with the thread)
I sincerely hope that someone will pick this up. Also, the egg obviously comes first because eggs always come before chickens. The first recognizable chicken would obviously have come from the first mutated egg.
