I'll try to answer your question... But can we said that Xue Tingxiang is the MC and a male? So it's on his pov so i was confused if he was called ML instead of MC
1. Yeah there are other males who likes zhao'er... One is her bussiness partner the other one is an illegitimate son of the emperor 2. I kinda forgot how he died.. I thinks he died because of the combination of fatigue, anger, regret and poisons so his son with Zhao'er came to see him and taunt him about how MC abandoned his wife and son.. And his son (actually MC Political rival at the imperial court) gave the final blow by telling him that the Son have taken the Wang surname (some guy who save zhao'er and the son when their ship was sunken) the son would not take back the xue name and even if MC persist no girl will marry the son since MC have spread rumor about son is a gay (which prompt the son to actually became a gay) so yeah MC tried to explain but the son just kinda ignored his attempt. 3. They don't divorce, surprisingly MC is adamant to stay in marriage with his wife no matter how much he was disgusted by the fact his wife was used to be a merchant (before he took the final stage of imperial court exam he ask her to stop her bussiness). MTL of this novel is a little hard on the brain since it also goes into detail regarding subjects in MC's education. It's still somewhat bearable though. A funny part: MC and Zhao'er are studying (MC teaching his future wife how to read and write) when they hear something from the back of their house. When they take a peek, they see MC's aunt with her fiance doing naughty stuff there in secret. In fact, the fiance was - ehem - making a delicacy out of aunt's bosom. Zhao'er was aghast meanwhile MC goes, "Why are you so surprised? When we get married, I'll be doing that too." (OMG HAHAHA) Fast forward to them sleeping that night, Zhao'er actually has a wet dream of our MC doing that to her! She wakes up embarrassed but does her best to brush it off. Then, after a while, MC wakes up, disgruntled, asks for a pair of pants blobamused which confuses Zhao'er but she gives it to him anyway. He changes, prepares for the early ablutions and goes about readying himself to leave for school. He leaves then Zhao'er tidies up and I think she finds MC's pants in the dirty clothes pile and wonders why he would need new pants since these were still clean. Of course, she manages to discover the wet patch and she is thunderstruck. She remembers overhearing a talk where they say young boys have morning accidents that show their desire to be with a woman. Zhao'er is embarrassed and wonders in indignation that MC actually wants to be with some woman! THEN she remembers him saying, "Why are you so surprised? When we get married, I'll be doing that too." --- These too are adorable. BTW, I think MC's cousin also likes Zhao'er. Said cousin looks down on MC. There was a whole fiasco where MC had to have a showdown with cousin to distinguish who between them would be sent to school. THey're not a rich family so money is kinda tight. Of course, our MC wins this showdown but things unfold where cousin still manages to go to school. Cousin goes to a richer school while MC goes to the poorer one. The former has expensive tuition and great resources. The latter school has cheaper tuition but educational content more meaningful. Anyway, there was this one scene where MC's cousin approaches Zhao'er and says something along the lines of, "I'll show you that I'm better than that dog." (<-MTL issue since his nickname seems to be Dog but MC personally changed his name to Xue Tingxiang) Cousin sounds very arrogant and Zhao'er is not impressed. She hates cousin so much because he's the type of person who feels good about himself by putting down others.
MC had a fetish on his wife's breasts... maybe MC's cousin do have some crush with zhao'er but anyway he can't act on it... since MC is a cautious man towards potential rival... and cousin knows it.. since cousin's dad is the reason why MC's Dad was beaten to death..... True that with MC's fascination with Zhao'er's boobs. Plus, I'm at the part of the story where I feel bad for the cousin. He finds out that his dad is draining their family's money on the village widow. Cousin had to transfer schools due to his school closing because of a scandal so his mother asked the dad to go around the villages to see if he can find a good school. He goes all overdramatic over MC saying how many shoes he's broken by walking around the villages just for his son when, by this point, MC, Zhao-er, and even his cousin already knew he's been cheating on his wife. What an asshole.
oh for cousin's father well.. there's no cure for being a cun*....i feel sorry for MC when he finds out the real reason his dad died... but it's cool when he said this family will have him but no me or this family will have me but no him.... basically using his newfound title as the top scorer for the regional exam to force the patriarch to exiles the shitty uncle..... really glad when he got expelled from the family genealogy book... Spoiler and died by STD or plague.... he just really can't hold it in his pant... but well he's a big minor villain.. because i think because of him the third uncle also died because of a plague.. and that third uncle was a bit decent to MC and Zhao'er... glad third uncle daughter marry one of MC's scholar friend and had a nice life....
BTW, I was sad to find out that cousin and MC used to be really close as kids. In fact, cousin would always open up his precious, educational books to MC so that both of them could 'read' together. They were young so it was basically them starting to learn new words together. But then, grandmother and cousin's parents would reprimand the boys. I don't even remember what the reason was why the two were being forbidden to spend time together.
This. This woman is obsessed. She freaks me out actually. She first sees MC by chance. He's strolling around in the capital with Zhao'er and their son. To be fair, it's not a 'love at first sight' thing. But her feelings grow to an - dare I say it - unhealthy degree. There's a point in time where MC, Zhao'er and son have to stay in the capital due to him finally being appointed a position after passing the exam. Zhao'er, being the business savvy chic that she is, opens up a shop and she puts up a sign looking to hire a helper for her store. Wu Wanqiong actually applies for the job (of course not disclosing who she is) and this crazy woman reasons out to herself that she just wants to check what kind of woman she is. She even denies to herself that she likes MC. It's the little things about her that freaks me out. She slowly compares herself to Zhao'er. How Zhao'er has rough hands and she doesn't but Zhao'er is who MC is married to. How Zhao'er is open and frank about her ideas while she is a born and bred noble lady. Even with those little comparisons, she still denies any sort of feelings for MC. I forgot what pushed her to ask but Wu girl questions Zhao'er what she thinks about women wanting to be with MC since he's attractive plus he's number 1 in exams. At first, Zhao'er laughs it off but Wu girl kept on pushing and asked her again and again until Zhao'er finally says that the kind of woman who would go for a married man is nothing but disgustingly shameless (hahaha).
Just a sidenote, it might be wrong but MTL shows that MC's nickname is Dog. And MC and Zhao'er have this inside joke about having puppies. So, in this scene, Zhao'er and son are at a restaurant waiting for MC to pass by and when he does, son shouts something like, "Papa! Papa look here! Your puppy is over here!" So cute!!! Suffice it to say, Zhao'er was so embarrassed. Nobody knew the champion was married and had a kid. So, the women close to Zhao'er and son were giving her derisive looks and thought she was shameless for teaching her son to kiss up to the champion in that way.
The Wu girl has reached an all-time low. She's not only obsessing on MC, she's obsessing about comparing herself to Zhao'er. Due to certain reasons, she falls out of favor with her father (main villain at this point). She gets sent away from the capital. An old maid of Wu girl trusted by the father is taking care of her. This old maid has been in the family since forever. Because of a mishap, main family business branch is without a proper leader but Wu girl manages to convince father to let her handle the businesses. Old maid ends up doing it first then slowly gives responsibilities to Wu girl. People are impressed that she manages to do it successfully. We know why she's doing this. She wants to show herself that what Zhao'er can do, she can do better. But she gets a wake up call when she finds out Zhao'er manages to successfully enter into an agreement with one of the toughest money ticketing guarantees in the empire. At this point, Wu girl basically snaps and tells her maid that Zhao'er needs to die. Her reason? Zhao'er is too successful as MC's right hand making it so that his political influence is gaining too fast in momentum. If she dies, he'll be crippled and it would be easier to deal with him. This woman is a psycho!
MC will rectified the psycho.. he hates her.. MC is really clear about who is his enemies and... so wu psycho is definitely a threat... i like how MC so vigilant of her and even warn Zhao'er not to let their son near her..
Finally finished MTL of the main story. I'm now jumping into the extras. Before that though, just wanted to mention that the story is basically how he manages to become the youngest grand secretary to be put in office at 48 years old. And, that happens in the last chapter of the main story. To also answer this question: He was a good emperor saddled with very ambitious and greedy ministers. Even the eunuchs had iffy loyalties which made it quite hard for him to rule because so many of the ministers were tricky and cunning. He blatantly favored MC because MC's ambitions were very much in line with what the Emperor wanted done. It helped that MC was a very capable politician. The first major position MC had was as a low official in charge of a coastal town that had a very strict sea ban making life difficult for the locals. Sea ban made it so that they weren't allowed to enter the waters. Meaning, they couldn't even go fishing or do any sort of job for their livelihood. The only thing the locals could do was smuggle. So, what did MC do? He didn't stop the smuggling. At all. Instead, he implemented an entrance toll into the town for merchants and had built warehouses with steep rental fees for their expensive goods. He actually accumulated 3 million (gold or silver) and sent it for government use which they later relegated to the military. The Emperor had nothing but praise for him. Especially since MC sent back all accounting books to show the Emperor where the money went and why it was important to lift the sea ban so that the locals would have means for legal business. Long story short, MC manages to make the town into a successful port city that specialized in trade. They even had foreigners settle there for business. I think this all happened in the span of four years.
