-1615

- Howard was intrigued and asked his own makeup artist for opinion. The person laughed and admitted inferiority: Shi Xiaoya had worked with the biggest filmmakers and had many brand endorsements. Howard was further displeased and dismissed her. He haughtily walked towards Lu Man. Shi Xiaoya whispered a warning to her. Howard asked if the Chinese side was almost done with their makeup as he towered over the two petite Chinese women. “Not yet, I just got started,” Lu Man said. Shi Xiaoya added that there are many little details to do. Howard then said his makeup artists all went on to achieve success and blatantly made an offer to recruit Shi Xiaoya, saying he could take her to Hollywood.

- “You are too limited here. Not in terms of your country’s population, but the development of TV and film industry. You have no future staying here. Don’t think you are at the top here, if you remain here you would just end up looking at the sky and not knowing how big the international stage is. Even others from your country hoped to achieve something in Hollywood. Like Wang Juhuai, is he not famous for winning an Oscar?” Howard said. He had not known that Wang was now Lu Man’s father as Wang had not gone back to the US nor done any interviews. Howard continue to sing about the benefits of going abroad, ending by saying “we are at least 50 years ahead of you in TV and movies!” Lu Man and Shi Xiaoya knew he was right, but the way he said it was too much. Howard repeated his offer, but Shi Xiaoya very coldly refused as she continued working: “Sorry, I was invited by Lu Man. It is impossible to suddenly do for others. She hired me and she is now my boss.” Howard honestly did not expect the refusal. “Think about it. If you miss this chance, you will stay in this small circle forever. Even if you want to develop in Hollywood in the future, you won’t have a chance. If you work for me, I can give you referrals. Otherwise, you won’t even get to go!” he threatened.

- Honestly, Howard didn't think much of Shi Xiaoya. Only, she was the best right now at this place, and he wanted to deal with Lu Man. Sure, Lu Man had the backing of Han Zhuoli, but what did she have outside of China and in Hollywood? Look at her, a big fish in a small pond and monopolizing the best in it. But Shi Xiaoya reiterated her refusal, citing her own professional ethics. If she abandoned a client halfway she would be finished in China, let alone developing in Hollywood. Besides, she was confident enough in her own ability and she did not fear his threat. If he was that capable, why don't he wait for her to reach the international stage and try to stop her then? Howard was infuriated by yet another woman looking down on him. Lu Man suddenly interrupted: "I know your uncle is Bobbert! The last time he came, I sent him packing. He may have some clout in Hollywood, but nobody spoke up for him back then. You want to depend on him to oppress others? Even if he was here, he wouldn't even dare to say such things!"

- Howard sneered at Shi Xiaoya, claiming that she was depending on Lu Man's background, hoping for Han Corp and Han Zhuoli to pave the way for her in Hollywood. Shi Xiaoya honestly never even thought of such a possibility. After all, even if she could not break to the international stage, she could just remain in China. Meanwhile, the Han family arrived at the venue. Grandma came knowing that Shi Xiaoya would be present, and so she quickly asked Zhuoli to buy tickets for her, Shen Nuo and Lin Liye. Wang Juhuai and a visibly pregnant Xia Qingwei also came to support Lu Man. The event was sold out and even the media came out to cover it. They politely interviewed the married couple, eventually asking about Lu Man and Han Zhuoli's own plans for children.

- Wang answered amicably that they have their own plans and they won't be pressured into having children quickly. Principal Liu then came to greet them and on Xia's request, escorted them backstage to see Lu Man. Elsewhere, Zhuoli and Zhuoling finally arrived at the venu and they both went straight towards the dressing room, one to look for Lu Man and the other for Shi Xiaoya. They arrived just in time to overhear Howard's disparaging and threatening words aimed at Shi Xiaoya. Zhuoling calmly asked Zhuoli in English: Didn't Han Corp acquire Saire Pictures (SaiLei? Serra?)? Saire Pictures used to be a Hollywood giant but fell onto hard times and Han Corp then became its majority shareholder. Flush with Han Corp's investment, Saire Pictures had a blockbuster hit after two years and regained its influence.

-1620

- Zhuoli and Zhuoling decided to use Saire Pictures as a vehicle to start a fantasy movie franchise and slowly expose the west to Eastern elements slowly before creating a global movie universe. In the future, Asian stars will be featured in leading roles and slowly integrating previous films into it (think Marvel Cinematic Universe). "Yes, didn't you do it with me?" Zhuoli said in English, understanding what his brother was planning. Zhuoling sneered audibly: "I thought our acquisition failed. Our Han Corp's presence in Hollywood is so low that people don't take us seriously." Their voices were loud enough to be heard by the people in the dressing room, and the fact that it was in English meant it was obviously directed at Howard. Howard froze when he turned to see them at the door. Of course he knew about Han Corp and Saire Pictures big success, it had sent shockwaves through Hollywood. That was why he had only targeted Shi Xiaoya and not Lu Man directly. That was also why he had instigated direct competition with Lu Man, so that Zhuoli would have nothing to complain about when she lost.

- He did not expect to make Han Zhuoli and Han Zhuoling unhappy. In the past people were skeptical about their investment in Saire Pictures, but the blockbuster proved them right. Zhuoli's face was plastered all over the newspapers and so Howard could recognize him. But he saw the similarities in Han Zhuoling and guessed that they are related. They walked in and Lu Man held Zhuoli's hand, saying he saw her while in makeup of a haggard woman. He laughed: "I will still see it when you go on stage. But even with makeup, your bones can't be covered. Now I finally know how true the saying was, 'beauty lies within the bones, not skin-deep'." Essentially he was feeding the other people in the room dog food with his sweet nonsense, and because he was Han Zhuoli, they could only watch him do it.

- Lu Man blushed at his exaggerated praise and deflected by greeting Han Zhuoling. Zhuoli meanwhile turned his attention at Howard: "So I heard you say you have some clout in Hollywood, that you can stop anyone from going." Howard reddened but hastily defended himself by saying he only meant about Shi Xiaoya. After all, she is just a little makeup artist without a background. "Is that so?" Han Zhuoling finally spoke. Zhuoli introduced him as his brother who had also worked on acquire Saire Pictures, and Howard choked a little because he recognized his name. Like Zhuoli, Zhuoling was also famous in Hollywood.

- In the welcoming party for the New York exchange students, Han Zhuoling was introduced but none of the students actually paid real attention. The acquisition of Saire Pictures was done discreetly and Zhuoling's face was never revealed to the public. Now this man who shook Hollywood was right before him. "So you can't do much, but enough to bring Shi Xiaoya to Hollywood?" Zhuoling asked, turning his words against him. Howard belatedly realized that they were completely helping Shi Xiaoya and said he was only talking to Shi Xiaoya; implying that he wasn't rude to Lu Man and therefore had not offended the Han family. Shi Xiaoya was just an outsider, unlike Lu Man who was family. "What do you think of Han Corp's right to talk to you?" Zhuoling asked. Howard simmered speechlessly, of course they had the right, they were industry giants while he was just a bit player. He had crowed about his status to the Chinese students all the while, to admit was to lose face, to deny would be cowardly. Luckily for him, Shana swooped in to rescue him. Shana came over and greeted the two brothers, but neither showed much reaction to the popular idol.

- Like how Howard had looked at the Chinese students as if they were ants, so did the Hans look at Shana the same way. Shana apologized on Howard's behalf and gave Han Zhuoling a brilliant smile that made Shi Xiaoya nervous. But Han Zhuoling turned his attention back to Howard and the younger man quickly said that Shi Xiaoya had challenged him to stop her once she goes international, and therefore he would wait till then. Shana frowned at Howard's impetuousness. She laughed and hoped to diffuse the situation, only for Zhuoling to interrupt: "I also want to see if you can do so." Howard smiled and said "we will wait and see". Zhuoling laughed coldly and made a phone call in Chinese: "We have some films announced by Saire recently. Go through the casting for each and look for Howard Gibson. If he's confirmed, replace him. If he's shortlisted for audition, tell them to remove him." He looked for the closest Chinese student and after confirming that she was the one translating for Howard earlier, ordered: "Tell him what I just said." Of course, he could do it himself, but who was Howard to deserve such treatment?

-1625

- The Chinese students thoroughly enjoy Han Zhuoling's showing off Han Corp's power. They also looked at Lu Man with worshiping (and fearful) eyes. Howard was stunned when his words were translated to him, as he really did sign up for some Saire films. It was already difficult to secure an audition for any movie and by closing Saire's doors to him it meant narrowing his chances in the industry even further. On the phone, Zhuoling's PA reported back that "it is done". Zhuoling returned Howard's word back to him: "As to your future achievements, we will wait and see." Shana could see the ashen look on Howard's face. Weren't you against Lu Man? How did you end up tangling with Shi Xiaoya instead? If he had the ability, he should have taken on Lu Man straight on.

- It was fine if he could do it, but Shi Xiaoya did not care about him at all and he ended up offending Han Corp. His uncle Bobbert might be influential but what was he when compared to such a large company? Shana was curious at the connection between Shi Xiaoya and Han Zhuoling, but focused on apologizing for Howard's immaturity. Howard on the other hand was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, he wanted to go home immediately to talk to his uncle right that moment. But when she urged him to apologize to Lu Man, Howard still hesitated. When he did open his mouth, Lu Man coldly cut him off and saying he should apologize to Shi Xiaoya instead. She gave Shana a look and the American realized Lu Man had seen through her intent to test the relation between Shi Xiaoya and Han Zhuoling. Howard was stung, finding it too degrading to apologize to a little makeup artist whom he had just shown so much contempt earlier.

- Shana nudged him, and Howard swallowed his pride and apologized to Shi Xiaoya even as his hate for Lu Man intensified. He also apologized to the impassive Han Zhuoling for his remarks before asking for Shi Xiaoya's forgiveness. Shi Xiaoya turned to look at Zhuoling quietly, because she didn't want to forgive the obviously unwilling Howard. This little gesture was caught by Lu Man and Zhuoli, as well as Shana. Zhuoling's expression softened as he told Shi Xiaoya to do as her heart wanted. And so Shi Xiaoya called out Howard for his insincerity and refused his apology, saying that he was the type who would find revenge. Howard's face blackened and Shi Xiaoya laughed, saying that it was further proof. When Howard asked again, she asked if he would have done it without CEO Han's intervention. "Don't answer, we all know. And even if he didn't, I still won't forgive you. I'll give your words back to you: How my career would go in the future, how you would stop me, we will wait and see."

- "Now I'm going back to work on Lu Man. You should start to prepare too, or it will be too late," she said. Howard anxiously pointed out the obvious to Zhuoling: he tried but she refused to accept it. Please, I really want the role in Saire Picture's film. Zhuoling raised an eyebrow: "Did you think if Xiaoya forgives you, I will rescind my order?" Shi Xiaoya was startled by his use of 'Xiaoya' and her mind went blank. Lu Man whispered to Zhuoli, does brother call her that intimately usually? "Of course not, it was still Ms Shi until earlier. Look at Shi Xiaoya, she's stunned. It must be the first time." Yes, she's petrified and stiff with a dumb look on her face. "Didn't expect brother to be the charming sort to suddenly change the form of address so naturally," Lu Man admired Zhuoling's thick face. Of course, this was also noticed by the others in the room. Howard was especially shocked, finally realizing that Shi Xiaoya must have a better relationship with Han Zhuoling than with Lu Man. He regretted what he did but Zhuoling enjoyed himself: "Whether Xiaoya forgives you or not, it wouldn't change my decision. As Xiaoya said, your apology is not sincere, you didn't even bother to pretend. Even if you did put up a show, you would think up ways to deal with her. I don't believe you woud change your life's behaviour after just a few words."

- Howard flushed with anger as he had been thoroughly tricked. He was furious and his clenched fists shook. And then... "Man-man!" They all turned to see Wang Juhuai and Xia Qingwei arriving, escorted by Director He. OMG it's Wang Juhuai, why is he here? Of course the Chinese understood what and who he meant by "Man-man". A delighted Lu Man went to greet them and fussed about her pregnant mother. Wang Juhuai teased Lu Man about her makeup, and she took the chance to say that he was more truthful and sincere than Zhuoli who praised her face earlier. "Well, he didn't say anything wrong," Wang Juhuai laughed and those who heard it sighed: a love-sick husband and an indulgent father who have both problems with their eyesight. Director He who had overheard the commotion pretended to know nothing about the problem and asked about the preparations, advising them to get ready quickly. But Shana was not listening to him, she was starstruck by Wang Juhuai.

-1630

- "Mr Wang!" Shana hurriedly introduced herself and her resume. Wang Juhuai greeted her in English, having some faint impressions of her. She gushed about wanting to meet him and seek his advice, she did not expect to see him with Lu Man- "Lu Man is my daughter," Wang said kindly and Howard felt the world crashing around him. He already felt something wrong when Wang came over and spoke amicably with Lu Man in Chinese. How was he going to embarrass Lu Man and avenge Bobbert now? Shana was also shocked and secretly congratulated herself for not yet offending Lu Man. She asked for the honor of having a song from Wang. Howard was full of contempt for her: why would the renowned and acclaimed Wang Juhuai ever compose for a little starlet like Shana. She's brave, that's for sure. Wang politely refused, citing his wife's pregnancy and he could possibly retire to take care of the child. It was a tactful refusal but also a true one. Wang Juhuai did shut himself to quickly finish up his current project the moment he found out about Xia Qingwei's pregnancy, and had not taken on any new jobs since then.

- Director He cut in at the right time and escorted Wang and Xia away. Shi Xiaoya then continued to work on Lu Man. Howard finally unleashed on Shana, mocking her for dreaming about getting help from Wang Juhuai. Shana was indignant, didn't she try to help Howard earlier? "You call that help? You told me to apologize and what happened? I lost all face!" "Fine, be that way, I won't bother with you any longer, you ungrateful dog!" The two sat apart acrimoniously. Meanwhile, students brought chairs for Zhuoli and Zhuoling at the dressing table, each man now flanking his woman. Lu Man chatted with Zhuoli as Shi Xiaoya worked. But Shi Xiaoya herself only felt pressure because Han Zhuoling was staring at her and making her nervous. "Mr. Han, don't you need to work?" she asked helplessly, causing Lu Man and Zhuoli to laugh: she even knows about his workaholic nature. "I don't work all the time," Zhuoling replied. "Oh," Shi Xiaoya muttered and continued to work. She felt something was still lacking in the makeup but a sudden flash of inspiration struck and she applied some brown spots under Lu Man's eyes, nose and cheeks. "The heroine in the story basks in the sun everyday, so there should be obvious flaws on the face," she explained.

- Her perfect skill gave the chance for Han Zhuoling to pop up: "It's very interesting to see your makeup." Shi Xiaoya grew hot and bothered and it intensified when she heard Zhuoli ask: "More than your work?" and Zhuoling replied, "It's more fun than my work." Zhuoli and Lu Man were stunned. Appeared! Someone who can make Han Zhuoling put aside his job for her! Zhuoli rued missing the chance to have recorded such a precious statement. Shi Xiaoya meanwhile could only distract herself by finishing up her job on Lu Man. The makeup done, Lu Man rose to look for her parents. Naturally, Han Zhuoli followed, and since Zhuoling was also related, he went along too. Shi Xiaoya planned to head to the seating area with Yujie, but Zhuoling stopped her: "Where are you going? Aren't you with us?". Shi Xiaoya stuttered that it wasn't appropriate to see Mr and Mrs Wang as an outsider. "How are you an outsider?" Lu Man blurted. Zhuoling gave her a look and she hastily amended: "You're my friend too, of course you can come along to see them. I didn't have the chance to introduce them to you earlier." Guo Yujie of course picked up on this and pretended to be busy with a phone call, and so Shi Xiaoya followed them. Zhuoli wanted to hold on to Lu Man's hand but she stopped him as it was also covered with makeup.

- Zhuoling and Shi Xiaoya followed behind the couple. She thanked him for standing up for her earlier. "It's nothing. You didn't need to worry, it is impossible for anyone to embarrass you," he said. She turned to look at him, needing to crane her neck up. She could see the softening look on his face and thought his ex-wife must be a complete idiot to have not cherished such a man. He gave her an inquiring look and she mumbled: "Nothing, just think that... you're quite good, really." Something inside Han Zhuoling threatened to bubble over and he turned away, suppressing the need to demand to know if Han Zhuoli ever got such a compliment before right there and then. They went into the VIP lounge and Shi Xiaoya was introduced to Wang Juhuai and Xia Qingwei by Lu Man: "...Speaking of which, she was also big brother's makeup artist in Survivor."

- "Oh?" her parents turned to look at Shi Xiaoya, obviously making the connection between her and Han Zhuoling. A while later, Grandpa, Grandma, Lin Liye and Shen Nuo arrived. Grandma and Lin Liye bright eyes immediately fell on Shi Xiaoya. They had become total fans, having watched her videos since that day. They even cheered and raged during skewers-gate, furious at the slanders thrown her way. They even consulted Lu Man and she told them that it was the work of someone hiring an 'internet navy'. Though Zhuoling later took action on Yuan Yina, he did not inform them and they had stewed in anger about the incident. Shen Nuo sat with Xia Qingwei to ask about her pregnancy. Xia felt that the predicted timing was troublesome as it would be near the Spring Festival, but Shen Nuo assured her it would meant less congestion on the road if she needed to go to the hospital. There were plenty of doctors on duty even during the festive period, and the hospital also had foreign doctors who did not celebrate it.

-1635

- On the other side, Grandma and Lin Liye pretended to not know about Shi Xiaoya. "Oh my, who is this charming little girl?" Grandma asked exaggeratedly. Xia Qingwei took the distraction to discreetly ask Shen Nuo about her and was informed that the family were very anxious ever since Zhuoling's divorce and lack of interest in finding another woman. Xia Qingwei knew what happened and said it must be fate, if not for Xia Yixin's stupidity, how would Zhuoling ever come to like Shi Xiaoya? Now he has the chance to find true love. He won't be embarrassed, as she herself was a divorcee. Shen Nuo appreciated her thinking and they looked on as Lin Liye too approached Shi Xiaoya with smiling eyes.

- "Are you Zhuoling's friend?" Lin Liye asked. Shi Xiaoya thought the question was strange, shouldn't she ask if she was Lu Man's friend? She was unsure on how to answer her. They shared two meals... and she had two of his ties at home. She turned to look at Zhuoling but he was also waiting for her response. Lin Liye and Grandma were already happy. Such drama! Look at her wanting his opinion, so sweet! Surely things are not so simple. More importantly, Han Zhuoling did not deny it! "Yes...?" Shi Xiaoya nodded and Grandma took her hand. "Oh, so rare! That Zhuoling will actually find a girlfriend!" she gushed. Female friend, not girlfriend; Shi Xiaoya wanted to clarify but then Lin Liye cut in: "How long have you two known each other?" Again, a strange question but Shi Xiaoya answered honestly that their first meeting was during the international film festival. "Well, that's not too recent at all," Grandma said with delight. Shi Xiaoya felt cramped by their enthusiasm and happy smiles that she could only laugh and not say anything. The two did not want Han Zhuoling to scare her away but did not realize they themselves were more scary. Shi Xiaoya knew they misunderstood something.

- Han Zhuoling saved her by asking the family if they had eaten. They haven't, they planned to eat after the event. Still holding on to her hand, Grandma then asked if Shi Xiaoya had already eaten with Lu Man. She did not. But Zhuoli brought over a box of sandwiches, having expected it. He picked one up to feed Lu Man as her hands were covered by makeup. Lu Man opened her mouth but realized she was the only eating. She whispered that it should be shared, but Zhuoli said it's for her and he had already ordered something nearby for them. Grandma wanted to slap him, who told him to order! They wanted to be hungry, then they would have the excuse to bring Shi Xiaoya along for dinner! But Zhuoli was smart, he knew what she was thinking and said he had only ordered some appetizers. The box was for Lu Man as she would be performing. "Good, good," Grandma nodded, happy that Han Zhuoli had some brains now. A married man was truly different. Shen Nuo urged Lu Man to fill her stomach.

- Still, Lu Man became embarrassed to be fed by Zhuoli in front of so many people. "Ah~~" he coaxed as if she was a child. Lu Man blushed, while Zhuoling felt as if he was being fed dog food. But Shi Xiaoya was still chatting with Grandma who was now asking about her home. Wang Juhuai saw how his daughter was being pampered and not wanting to lose, took out a thermos and poured some bird nest soup for Xia Qingwei, saying that the doctors had given him some advice and he was always prepared with such nutrition. He spooned it up and moved to fed Xia Qingwei, causing her to be embarrassed too. Wang insisted but relented when Xia Qingwei insisted to eat with her own hands. Still, he continued to cup the bowl together with her, slightly sad that he couldn't spoil her. She whispered an apology: "There's just too many people around, wait till we go home," and Wang became happy again. Then Han Zhuoli's ordered appetizer hors d'oeuvres arrived.

- The Hans snacked on the appetizers, with Grandma still holding on to Shi Xiaoya's hand. Shi Xiaoya was beginning to feel sweaty but did not dare to look at Han Zhuoling again in case it caused yet another misunderstanding. Grandma then invited Shi Xiaoya to join them for dinner. She declined but Lin Liye insisted: "No, it won't be a bother. You are Zhuoling's friend, we are not strangers. You can just call me mother." The other women in the room were speechless at this near desperation tactic. Shi Xiaoya turned to give Zhuoling a look: Your friends call your mom mother too? Lin Liye laughed and explained: “He did not have many friends, he does not make friends easily and those who are his friends are bound to be good. Of course they are not outsiders." "Yes, Zhuoling is difficult to get close to, but he is actually very good," Grandma followed up. Zhuoling tugged at his tie, feeling embarrassed as they continued: "It's because of his cold face that people dare not approach him. In the past he only had his brothers and that boy from the Chu family. Only after they got to know him that they know how he really is." Shi Xiaoya nodded in understanding and Lin Liye signaled at Grandma: this girl is simple and naive, easily hooked! "He only have a few friends in the first place. We haven't seen him having any female friends apart from you," Grandma said, blatantly letting Shi Xiaoya know that Zhuoling had no other women in his life. Shi Xiaoya had been listening absent-minded, but when she heard that she suddenly felt happy.

-1640

- Grandma was pleased to see Shi Xiaoya and Han Zhuoling's silent interactions. She unilaterally decided for Shi Xiaoya to join them for dinner later. Shi Xiaoya was not given the time to protest, as they were then ushered to their seats for the event. Lu Man went to sit with Zheng Yuan, and from her position she could see that Howard was unsettled. When he saw Lu Man, he stood to make his over, only for someone in his team to remind him not to mess up again. Shana was still annoyed by him earlier and completely ignored him too. Their teacher Rosen tried to calm him down but Howard lashed out. Rosen saw how the boy's pride had completely crumbled and so decided to provoke him: You did not care about winning or losing and treat this as a simple game. But we have won every year, do you know the consequences if the team loses for the first time?

- The school will be mocked and you and Shana be blamed for the defeat. If you can't even beat these Chinese, how can you survive in Hollywood? How would the media look at you? Who would still hire you as an actor? Howard was stung: yes, he really did not place much importance on the event. Even if they lost, he thought it would be fine if he himself did well. Rosen continued: If you refuse to listen, go ahead. Then you'll find that it's not just Han Zhuoling who would cause you trouble. You offended Shi Xiaoya and she might not even be related to him and you are already in this much trouble. But Lu Man and Han Zhuoli are an actual couple, do you think Han Zhuoli would remain quiet if you provoke her now? Now pull yourself together! If you mess up and cause trouble for the others, I'll be sure to let the school know!

- The auditorium was filled with an enthusiastic audience, some bringing various banners and signs as sign of support for their respective Chinese idols. Sections of the fans competed against each other in a cheering match. The New Yorkers felt the pressure of being the away team. Then the jury were introduced: Xi Jiashan (drama director) and Tan Xiaoyun (drama actor), Robert Spicen and Hayer Clement (Broadway actors). They were all famous and respected and there wouldn't be any accusations of bias later. The event began with an introduction of the Donghua Film Academy...

- One by one the Chinese schools gave their performances. The judges pointed out their mistakes and gave constructive but frank criticism. Those watching knew that those Chinese schools had no chance of winning. The judges were discerning and easily saw through their flaws and the obvious lack of teamwork.

- The later performances from other schools were much better, but still had room for improvement. The watching principals shook their head and turned to Principal Liu: it is all up to your school now, since you have the winner of the Huayi Cup in your team. But Principal Liu was not happy: They had all decided that even if they lost, Lu Man would not be held responsible. This is all about teamwork, so don't try to pressure us. Meanwhile at the NY group's seating, Howard gave scornful remarks at the poor performances of the Chinese schools. Rosen did not like his attitude but privately agreed that Howard was right. But he still cautioned Howard as Lu Man's school had yet to perform. The students from the other schools could hear Howard and were angered.

-1645

- Finally it was time for Lu Man's school. The scenes played out without words, acting with just facial expression, gestures and movement. There were only a few lines, it was as quiet as watching a silent movie. The audience sat entranced, holding their breath as they watched. When the students ended their performance and bowed, the judges applauded with genuine excitement and appreciation. Judge Xia praised them, only nitpicking the fact that Lu Man's aura was too strong at times, unwittingly taking the focus at times with her skill. Yet, it also meant she managed to draw away people's attention from the deficiencies of others.

- Judge Tan praised the students for being immersed in their roles and their director for pulling it all together. The Broadway judges also enthused about the performance. Hayer wanted to know about the director of the play, and Lu Man took the opportunity to introduce Teachers Yao and Hong as well, before thanking the director who had maximized their potential.

- She thanked Director Deng Xu and said that the clip was from his current movie After Sunset. The judges were pleasantly surprised. Even Robert was a fan. The emcee noted that Director Deng was actually in attendance. Deng went to greet the judges, while the emcee gushed about how the school managed to secure such an esteemed director for a 20 minute school play. Meanwhile, Principal Zhang was sour, he knew it was all because of Han Zhuoli and Lu Man. The other schools who did not share Zhang's grudge were more than happy to see Zhang's being smacked yet again by Lu Man and teased him over it by praising Principal Liu. Liu of course demurred: Hey, did you think it was so easy to invite him? I called so many people and nobody agreed. I didn't even dare to call Deng.

- "But who knew he came on his own and helped us out for three days out of his busy schedule. It was Deng who decided the cast and did the final rehearsal. Thanks to Lu Man, CEO Han was worried about us," Liu explained, indirectly showing off. He was very satisfied with the performance already as it annoyed Principal Zhang to no end; and perhaps there was a real chance for a victory. Especially since Howard looked rattled from that encounter with Shi Xiaoya and Han Zhuoling. Back on stage, Deng Xu said he only knew of the event from CEO Han and agreed as it would be nice to nurture the next generation.

- Deng Xu wanted more people to see China from different angles via their domestic films. He was also interested to discover new talent and rough diamonds. His words made it obvious that he came because of Han Zhuoli. When asked about the choice of the play, he explained that it was for the benefit of the visiting team. Even though there would be subtitles on the big screen, it wouldn't be enough and that was why he chose a near-silent performance. It would be very difficult for the performers, but the highest difficulty was on Lu Man.

-1650

- Deng Xu agreed that Lu Man's presence took most of the focus, but it also meant she was under the most scrutiny as well. He had been worried about the pressure getting to her, but she did much better than the actors he had worked with. The other judges voiced their agreement with his assessment of her. Judge Xu suddenly decided to recruit Lu Man for his new drama on the spot, promising her an impactful role and easy filming schedule. The audience were shocked as Xu was a famous drama hit-maker.

- Judge Tan told him to be patient as the event was still ongoing and it wasn't proper to put her on the spot. It was also an indirect caution, because the person behind Lu Man was after all Han Zhuoli and she would of course need to discuss with him first. Judge Xu apologized, he was simply enamoured due to her talent. At the guest table, Grandma and Shen Nuo praised Director Deng and Lu Man. Still, Shen Nuo was a little peeved that Director Deng had yet to cast Lu Man in one of his films. He must be short-sighted and not as discerning as Judge Xu! Their words were heard by the other guests nearby, causing them to realize that Lu Man had indeed been truly accepted by the Han family and her marriage to Han Zhuoli was not an empty one. There were speculation that Lu Man had seduced Zhuoli and the Han family were disatisfied with her, but now it was apparent that it wasn't so.

- Back on stage, Director Deng Xu said Judge Xu's eagerness was understandable. But sorry, he was too late. Deng had already made an offer to Lu Man during their last rehearsal. His next heroine must be her, and no matter how busy she was he would accomodate her and her for him. The audience erupted, louder than for Xu, since he only offered a big role, but Deng was straight up giving the lead role to Lu Man. Lu Man smiled and thanked both of them for the opportunities, promising to participate.

- Xu who had thought he would miss out was heartened by the acceptance and quickly said "it's a promise". The audience were shocked again: actors usually beg directors for parts, but here the directors were begging the actor. Meanwhile, the NY group were shaken, as they do know of Deng Xu as a critically-acclaimed director even all the way in Hollywood. They complained among themselves about the Chinese school needing such a director just to win, but it only made the Chinese students more than happy. They were glad for the chance for Lu Man to stand up for them and tweak the noses of the NY group. Howard and the NY students did not understand their Mandarin but thought they were arrogant and laughing at them. The NY students encouraged each other to defeat the Chinese, but their teacher Rosen was worried as it was a sign of uneasiness, as if they are trying to hynotize themselves into confidence.

- Back to the stage, the broadway judges also praised Lu Man, and even hoped for Lu Man to visit Broadway in the future. It was not a direct invitation, because they knew Lu Man had to adjust to a foreign language and environment before being accepted by Broadway. Lu Man understood what they meant and promised to work hard to meet their expectations. Among the audience was Dong Jingxi, the one who had been replaced from the performance. She came to see a farce, thinking that the school would never win, that she was better than Luo Yijun who replaced her. But contrary to her expectations, Lu Man was praised so highly and was even offered roles in a movie as well as a drama.

-1655

- Would Lu Man step into the international stage after working with Deng Xu? Even the other members of the school performed without mistakes. Dong Jingxi did not care. So what, they will still lose to the New York group! At the guest table, Grandma whispered to Shen Nuo: "This Director Deng Xu is a visionary, turns out he had already recruited Lu Man." Shen Nuo agreed: "Indeed, surely there are reasons why he won so many awards." The other guests were silent, do you need to associate Lu Man with everything? Backstage, Lu Man and her group were removing their makeup. Shana lead the NY group to the stage for their turn, giving Lu Man a curt nod as they walked past. Shana had no beef with Lu Man before, but now there was a reason. The NY school had invited Judge Robert before but he never gave Shana such praise. He invited Lu Man to Broadway, but never did the same for Shana. Now Shana regards Lu Man as a competitor, even though she thought it was farcical: Shana would return to the US afterwards and Lu Man would forever be in China. Still, Shana was not happy to subconsciously compare herself to Lu Man. When Howard walked past the Chinese group, he said that they shouldn't be too proud just because of a few words of praise. It's a team event, and having just one outstanding person would not be enough. As a whole, they are still lacking. The Chinese group was angry because it was an unprovoked comment from a sour grape. Before Li Zeyu could scold him, Lu Man said coldly: "My classmates performed very well. Without them, the scene would not be as effective. This match is about acting, not about shooting your mouth off. I hope you can cash the cheques your mouth is writing."

- "If you are so confident, you wouldn't have the need to prove yourselves here," Lu Man said and quoted an idiom. Li Zeyu who had been annoyed by Howard's attitude all this time but lacked the confidence to do so heard Lu Man's words and her anger dissipated. So did the rest of the Chinese team: their anger were replaced by indifference. Lu Man was right, it was obvious Howard was completely shaken, he had been mouthing off to cover his insecurity. The Chinese group laughed, finally being able to vent. Howard was furious, but it was time to go on stage. Once more the NY students told each other that they will defeat the Chinese and show them real skill. Lu Man then went to sit down to clean up her thick makeup. Her classmates Xu Ziyi and Zheng Yuan sitting at her sides commented that Shana had suddenly felt hostile towards her. Lu Man noticed it too but did not care. The NY students will be leaving soon anyway, they won't cross paths again in the near future. Who knows if they even will meet again? After all, Hollywood is a much crueler place than China.

- Too many teen idols would disappear into obscurity, replaced by countless others who would take their place. Shana is beautiful now, but her career depends on her decisions. Not everyone have the courage to take the next step as it was not guaranteed to bring success. Lu Man was only speaking about Shana, but her friends noted that meant Lu Man herself was confident in stepping into the global stage. They were not too surprised as she had the backing of the Han family, and she of all people in China would most likely make the breakthrough. They then went to watch the NY performance. It was a disappointment after all that hyperbole, because the NY group did not perform well. Especially Howard who did not manage to display the brilliance he had shown in his movie roles. It was obvious that the NY group were out of sorts. Even Shana was affected, and the Chinese students could see the flaws and mistakes. "Is it just me or are Shana and Howard looking at Lu Man every now and then?" Xu Ziyi commented.

- The others began to analyze: Maybe it was because they want to win against Lu Man and this is what made their performance bad? After all, Lu Man had been praised by the judges earlier. Maybe those two could not bear comparing themselves to Lu Man and this affected their own performance. This is the result of Lu Man's pressure casting a shadow on them. They did not want to lose, but their desire made their performance worse. Was it really because they focused too much on Lu Man? No matter what, they had lost. They were full of confidence earlier, and now they are on the verge of losing to someone who had never won before. You think about it: how big an impact something like that would be? How miserable would they be, coming to China expecting an easy victory but collapsed because of Lu Man. Two rising Hollywood stars, ruined by Lu Man!

- Lu Man who heard all this was speechless. "This too exaggerated," she said. "We have all lost to you before and did not really accept it. But now the NY group is also defeated by Lu Man and this is a refreshing feeling," someone said. Others agreed, and said that Lu Man was an approachable person and cool. The principals who witnessed this wondered if it was really because of Lu Man. Principal Liu was of course chuffed. The NY teacher Rosen did not understand their words but knew they were all talking about Lu Man.

-1660

- The judges castigated the NY group, questioning their commitment to the event and wondering if the pressure had gotten to them. Judge Robert said he had seen how the NY actors were distracted and their performance brought shame to the NY school. He had noticed Howard and Shana kept looking at the audience while performing. Judge Hayer gave them some harsh advice about needing to focus on the stage and not be swayed by outside influences. The Chinese judges didn’t need to add much, and it was obvious to all that the NY group had lost.

- Shana felt aggrieved, since Lu Man had been singled out and given so much attention by the judges earlier. When they returned backstage, the NY group broke into argument, each accusing the other especially Shana and Howard for disrupting the team’s performance. Howard fired back in retaliation. On the other hand, Shana apologized to the team and so Howard became the focus. Teacher Rosen came back to quell the argument, saying that they are making a mockery of themselves. They need to pull themselves up and do better next time.

- Rosen gave a speech about they needed to take the defeat to heart and learn from it, saying what they had done on stage had disrespected the judges, the audience and to the performance itself. Everyone could see how much effort they had put in, and being too complacent against a weaker foe had backfired. They need to accept that they had lost and lost spectacularly, and stop disgracing themselves. The chastised NY group stopped quarrelling and went back to their seats for the results. The judges were invited to announce the rankings. Third was the NY exchange group and they were invited to accept the award. Howard and the rest were stewing. Third place meant they were better than two other schools, but it also meant they were third in a pool of lesser known schools in the first place, it was nothing to be proud about for them. They knew this was given as a face-saving gesture.

- Rosen also felt it was an insult. They might as well given nothing, and he looked at the Broadway judges and wondered. The NY group went to take the trophy quickly, not wanting to be on stage any longer. Next was National Academy of Drama who took second place. Principal Zhang was already pleased and later headlines will still say they had overpowered New York. The students were especially pleased, having remembered the insulting comments the NY group had made earlier. And of course the first place went to Lu Man’s Guodian. The audience applauded, united as they were in the victory against New York. The judges praised the winners. While Lu Man and her team prepared to leave the stage, the emcee stopped them, reminding them about the bet. The winning school’s banner would be hung on the honor roll of the other schools. The other three schools were completely in the dark, and of course the NY group was not happy. Being confideent, they had brought the banners for this occasion.

- The schools sent up representatives to take the flags. On stage, Lu Man was holding the flags for Guodian. The other Chinese schools were not too worried: the principals had secretly agreed not to do the gesture. After all, once the NY group had left, how would they check on it? Principal Liu also agreed, as it was important to maintain harmony between the Chinese schools since they had also made concessions for Lu Man to be in the exchange program. On stage, Lu Man handed out the banners to the other schools, leaving the NY group for last. She handed the banner to Shana who accepted it coldly. The event closed and all the teachers went to have a meal. The NY teachers went along so as not to appear as sore losers. While Lu Man was heading to find Zhuoli, she was confronted by Howard. He asked what it would take for the Hans to rescind the order against his career. Lu Man said it was not up to her, it was Han Zhuoling’s decision. Howard of course did not have the guts to do so, and he wilted when he turned around to see Zhuoli and the entire Han family behind him.

-1665

- Teacher Rosen called Howard back and the boy left, unwilling to face Han Zhuoli. Meanwhile, Li Zeyu and Zheng Yuan invited Lu Man for a victory dinner but understood when she declined; after all the entire Han family was there waiting for her. The moment the students left, Lu Man slipped her hand into Zhuoli's, finding assurance and comfort in his presence. He was amused by her initiative and she said she was pleased because with him around, there was nothing for her to be afraid of. Meanwhile, Guo Yujie had already disappeared, leaving Shi Xiaoya to be dragged off by Grandma.

- Grandma praised Lu Man for her performance. The event judges came to bid Lu Man farewell. Judge Xu and Director Deng reminded her of her promise to act in their projects. Zhuoli thanked Deng Xu for his contribution, but he was more than happy to have seen Lu Man's skill in action. Judge Robert looked forward to the development of Lu Man's career, honestly believing he could one day work with her. When they left, Hayer commented that Robert was very optimistic about Lu Man. Robert said he had seen something in Lu Man that was also in his mentor Mr. Cromshaw. Her aura were stronger than three other people that he had met.

- When asked, Robert declined to name the three person, saying that it might offend them. Hayer admitted that Lu Man had a charm and strong presence that could dominate the stage. Robert agreed, saying it was both a boon and a curse. She could cover up the mistakes of others, and need to weaken herself at times in order not to snatch focus away from the performance. The two judges did not hide their discussion of Lu Man, surprising the other teachers and principals of their praises and evaluation. Meanwhile, the Hans split into their cars, and obviously Lu Man would be with Zhuoli. Shi Xiaoya was not about to be the third wheel but was unsure when asked about her seating preference. Zhuoling swooped in: "She will be in my car." Grandma quickly agreed before Shi Xiaoya could say anything.

- Lin Liye and Shen Nuo, Han Zhuoli and Lu Man took off in their cars, leaving Zhuoling and Shi Xiaoya. Zhuoling found himself unable to stop smiling after being able to see her again. He felt lighter and comfortable seeing her face. Suddenly he saw Han Zhuofeng approaching from a distance. "Get in the car," he told Shi Xiaoya and she obeyed. Zhuoling strapped himself in and quickly started the car. In the rearview mirror he could see Han Zhuofeng running towards the car. "Wait for me!" he shouted in the cold. "I think I hear someone calling," Shi Xiaoya wondered, but Zhuoling had closed the windows and turned on the heaters to cover the sound. She wanted to turn to look back but Zhuoling stepped on the gas and made a turn. "It's the wind," he said. "I guess I heard wrongly," Shi Xiaoya said once she saw there was nobody behind. Zhuofeng stopped in his tracks. What the hell, he had been with the Hans all the while. He only went to the washroom but when he came back everyone had disappeared. He had called his mother Lin Liye but she had already left. He saw Zhuoling but when he chased after him, he seemed to catch a look on his brother's face. Surely he must have seen him. He had even shouted so loudly. But Zhuoling got in the car and drove away so fast! He took out his phone to call him. Zhuoling wanted to ignore the call but his phone was resting on the console and Shi Xiaoya could see the caller ID. "What?" Zhuoling answered via his Bluetooth headset. "Brother, didn't you see me just now?" Zhuofeng complained. "I didn't. You were there?" Zhuoling said with minimal guilty conscience. "I was!" "Where? Why didn't I see you?"

- By now even Zhuofeng was doubtful, maybe his brother really didn't see him. "I shouted for you at the parking lot, but you didn't stop," he said, depressed. Zhuoling had little impression of him, was he even at the event earlier? But he knew better than to actually say it. "Really? I really didn't see you," he said. "Oh, forget it. I'll just call for a ride," Zhuofeng said and Zhuoling ended the call. Shi Xiaoya was curious about the call but did not want to be a busybody, but Zhuoling told her: "That was my brother Zhuofeng. He also came to watch, but somehow everyone left him behind." Shi Xiaoya recalled that she heard someone shouting when they were in the car, was it him? Zhuoling vaguely answered 'maybe'. How about turning back to give him a ride? "No, he's all grown up, he can hire a cab," Zhuoling refused, conveniently ignoring the past when he insisted on sending Shi Xiaoya back. Instead he asked about Survivor's filming. Shi Xiaoya said it was good: Qin Zigou, Zhang Shuidong, Lin Yantao, Zhang Jian and the e-sports player Cheng He. Zhuoling's ears perked up when she mentioned Cheng He, since she added that he was hot at the moment for winning a world championship. "Yes, he is quite fun. He just graduated high school, and people are curious about e-sports. He also took us out to eat chicken." Zhuoling tapped the steering wheel as he muttered: "Just graduated from high school... 18 years old?"
