You still feel bad for her?” The controversy spread and even affected the other guests that appeared in ‘Performer’, their abilities and motivations now questioned by netizens. Even those who were announced for future episodes in advance but have yet to appear were dragged in. Meanwhile Ge Guangzhen was stunned to know that the Video-on-Demand stat for the show was extremely low, only 2.58 million of the expected tens or hundreds of millions. This was bad news on top seeing all his stars being attacked online. Then there was an admission from on the stars Jiang Yuhan: He said he was only invited after the megastars had withdrawn from the show after the first controversy about being rigged. Later, the producers insisted to him that the show was not scripted and so he participated and played according the rules. “I do not know if the round I won had been rigged or not, I was not told anything by the producers. But if the show was really compromised, then I am very sorry to have disappointed you. Therefore, I have decided to withdraw from ‘Performer’ and no longer take part in any future competitions.”



982 – A few other artists followed suit, angering Ge Guangzhen. Their agents called to pay compensation for breaking their contracts. There was real danger that the show can’t continue to broadcast. Deputy Wu finally made a suggestion: they should actually seek out FL and work out something to mutually benefit the two shows as their rivalry would keep them in the public eye. Ge said their situation was due to FL’s fault in the first place, but Wu pressed on and Ge eventually relented.



983 – Ge Guangzhen even made the call to FL personally. He introduced himself politely to the surprised FL and frankly asked for her services to turn Performer around. She refused resolutely. Ge admitted that they had differences but emotions shouldn’t get in the way of pure business. FL said she did not agree, she may be a professional but she also had her own ethics and preferences. She did not like Performer’s production crew and actions. Ge kept his temper in check and admitted his mistake and offered an apology. He will also have StarTV’s other stars made available to her, Ge would personally be indebted to other producers by doing so. But FL still refused and Ge reiterated his sincerity in wanted to get rid of the unpleasant past and for future cooperation.



983 – Ge said everyone is connected in the industry. In the future FL’s dramas and movies would also need exposure and advertising in StarTV. FL asked if he was telling her not to offend the station. Ge said he wasn’t threatening but stating a fact. He admitted that the show was failing and the stars were negatively affected. He was under a lot of pressure for using a lot of funds and resources. But in the end who do you think will be blamed? He reminded her how several artists who had offended StarTV were completely blacklisted. FL said that it was an obvious threat and Ge heard the anger in her voice and thought she was afraid. FL laughed and said people like him never learned. In the past the director of a drama (Zhang Xiaoying’s drama) also said the same things. In the end their ratings were trashed and I have lived well. Before, your group contacted me and warned me to take responsibility or it would not be good for me. In the end, you’re the one being hammered. So do you think I would take your threat seriously? She said she would consider it. Otherwise there was no use in further discussing. Their talk was interrupted by a knock on Ge’s door, the chairman had asked for him. Ge ended the call and went to meet a very displeased Chairman Hu. Hu had already known about his call to Lu Man and asked about it. Ge explained that she refused purely because of the Lu Company. When asked for his idea, Ge said they can’t cancel the deal with Lu and so they have to look for other PR consultants. Surely Classic X-Files can’t always get guests as powerful as Sun Yiwu. Hu was doubtful as there are plenty of mess still needs to be sorted and many stars had resigned. Hu felt pained, saying that if it wasn’t for Ge provoking Lu Man, Jicheng and Sun Yiwu would have appeared in ‘Performer’, StarTV would have an unassailable lead over DonghuaTV. You have grown complacent and didn’t think such a small artist would matter, right? Ge bowed his head, knowing and understood the reason it got this point. He had acted stupidly. If he had asked all those who had lost out to Lu Man, they would have all said the same: “We did not know when we became confused and made the first mistake and lost as a result.”



986 – Chairman Hu himself was under pressure due to the large budget allocated to ‘Performer’ that caused other programs to be unhappy. Hu decided that the recorded shows to be broadcast as usual, but if ratings did not improve then it would be canceled. Meanwhile, FL received a call from Classic X-Files’ Lu Dongliu after her earlier conversation with Ge had ended. Lu Dongliu bluntly asked if Ge tried to hire her and was relieved when FL said she had refused. She also honestly told him that several other programs had approached her, making Lu nervous again. FL however told him that she would continue to work with Classic X-Files which was now top in the ratings and popularity. Continuing to work with them would increase her exposure and so it was a win-win scenario.



987 – The call ended amicably and then FL saw ML was unhappy. He had to travel that very night, but promised to return on the morning of the 9th so that they could get their marriage certificate. He had left word for Manager Hao or the guards to help her if needed, as he would be taking Assistant Zheng with him and contact might be spotty. He then laughed and revealed that Han Corp’s artists would not be going to ‘Performer’.



988 – They had dinner but ML remained uneasy leaving FL alone as he left for his trip. FL found it ironic that in the past she thought her mother would be alone, but now her mother had Wang Juhuai and now FL was the one alone when ML left. The next day she went to her mom’s place and Wang revealed that he had been staying there in the spare room.



989 – He was staying there as the new villa was being renovated. Xia Qingwei had the place being done according to her wishes, as Wang had told her that she was the reason he was staying in China, the reason he bought the villa and had hoped to live together there; so of course everything was up to her preference. Xia then asked since FL would be alone while ML was away, was she coming back to stay? Wang was embarrassed but FL declined, saying ML would return soon. Meanwhile, Lu Qiyuan was driving Xia Qingyang around Xia Qingwei’s neighbourhood. They were looking around the area and noted the prices; surely Lu Man must have earned a lot lot. She only needs to give 20 million and most of the pressure on Lu Company would be relieved. Xia Qingyang was trying to divert Lu Qiyuan’s anger onto Lu Man, since Lu Qi’s scheme in ‘Performer’ only gained negative feedback and now the Lu Company was burdened with the sponsorship fee.



990 – They were stopped at the gates by the security. When asked, Lu Qiyuan said they were visiting Xia Qingwei. The guard was suspicious when Xia Qingyang said they were Mr. and Mrs. Han. The guard stuck to his procedures and called ahead to check and stopped them from entering despite their bluster. FL received the call and went down to contront them. She thanked the guards and before she could say anything else, she was immediately harangued by Lu Qiyuan and Xia Qingyang for arbitrarily moving away. They demanded to be let in. When FL asked how they had found out, Lu Qiyuan proudly said Lu Man can never be rid of him and he will always be able to find them.



991 – FL was inwardly skeptical; if that was true shouldn’t he know that she had moved in with Han Zhuoli? FL blandly apologized to the guards for the trouble in the future, as these people are not welcomed. There was no need for the guards to ask Xia Qingwei or her for permission in the future. She also provided a photo of Lu Qi to be added into the blacklist. She then turned and walked away, leaving Lu Qiyuan and Xia Qingyang shouting for her to come back. The guards threatened to call the police and they could only get onto their cars to leave. They stewed in their anger after coming to a realization that Lu Man had deliberately sabotaged them by appearing in Classic X-Files. Back home, Lu Man told her mother what had happened. She then called bodyguard Zhou and asked to check on the information leak. Wang asked if they had been harassed like this in the past. Xia said now it was because they wanted to take advantage of FL.



992 – FL warned Wang that such encounters might occur in the future. Lu Qiyuan can be ignored but to make use of her, he would resort to getting to her mother. Wang reassured her that he would protect Xia Qingwei and would not show mercy to Lu Qiyuan. FL believed him. Later that day, bodyguard Zhou reported that they had hacked into Lu Qiyuan’s computer. There was an anonymous email that revealed the address and photos of Xia Qingwei’s home. It was traced back to Han Dongping and was serious enough for him to report back to ML. FL then explained to her mother that this was because Han Dongping did not like FL entering the Han family and so he had hatched this scheme to ‘kill with a borrowed knife’. They really did not understand Han Dongping’s way of thinking, how was this going to change Han Zhuoli’s mind? Wang was furious at this interference. He called a certain Mayor He from whom he had received an invitation for a municipal dinner. Mayor He was ecstatic to hear that Wang would accept the invitation.



993 – Wang then told FL and Xia that Han Dongping would be attending the same dinner. He wants to bring the two of them along and let the world know that FL did not have a poor background, that Xia Qingwei was no mere divorced woman who had nothing. They had him: Wang Juhuai. How dare Han Dongping disrespect the woman he loved and her daughter! Up to this point, FL never thought of recognizing Wang as her father as it was unimportant to her and ML. Now she was beginning to feel something. She thanked Wang for his suggestion but declined to go, it was enough for him to take her mother along, as he still wasn’t officially her step-father and thus would be open for slander. It would be different if Han Zhuoli was there as well. Wang agreed with her reasoning. Xia was hesistant but Wang insisted that he wants people to know that she would be the future Mrs. Wang. She was the main character of the play and she have to do it for Lu Man.



994 – Xia finally agreed and FL offered to take her shopping for suitable clothes. Wang wanted to follow but Xia laughed as they would be shopping for women clothings. He did not mind, he would be responsible for swiping his card. He obediently followed several steps behind as Xia and FL walked ahead hand in hand. They whispered back and forth, with FL encouraging her mother to settle down with Wang. Xia tried to brush it off but she was indeed happy with Wang.



995 – She came to a decision and FL stood to the side. Wang was surprised and asked what was wrong. Xia: “The me right now, do you still want to marry?” Wang was stunned speechless, while Lu Man was cringing at his slow-wittednes. But she too did not expect her mother to be so decisive after being persuaded. Seeing how Wang was still unresponsive, Xia turned away. Wang hurriedly rushed to hold her, apologizing and stuttering in joy. He was very emotional as he had waited for over 20 years and though he kept saying she was to be his Mrs. Wang, he knew she still had her doubts. He thought he had to wait longer. With tears, Xia said it was because of FL’s words that gave her the final push. They had lost twenty years and she did not want to regret any longer. Wang Juhuai said he should have been the one proposing, to which Xia said “Didn’t you propose every day?” Wang laughed and held her close. He wanted to get the marriage certificate immediately; he had kept an eye on when the public offices would open during the holiday season. Xia blinked: “Are we no longer buying clothes?”



996 – Wang said they could go shopping later. Meanwhile, Xia Qingyang was pestering Lu Qiyuan about needing new clothes for the municipal dinner. Suddenly she exclaimed, causing Lu to step on the brakes in shock. He was angry but Xia pointed to the roadside: Wasn’t that Xia Qingwei, walking intimately with a strange man? Even Lu Man was watching and smiling. How shameless! Lu Qiyuan parked the car and immediately shouted at Xia Qingwei. Wang immediately shielded Xia with his body. FL said to Wang: this was Lu Qiyuan, the ex-husband. Lu Qiyuan was furious; he was after all her father. How dare she help her mother in such shameless behaviour! When he reached out, Wang grabbed hold of him and threw him down. Wang was completely irritated to have the day’s good mood be spoiled.



997 – “You have been divorced for over ten years, don’t talk as if she had wronged you. You were the one who went to look for a mistress, abandoning her for over a decade. You still have the face to blame her?” Wang demanded. Lu Qiyuan said it was none of his business and once more Wang reminded him that they had been divorced. Seeing how Wang was protecting Xia, Lu Qiyuan switched his attention towards Lu Man. He was greeted with a fist in the face from Wang and fell. Wang: “I have long wanted to hit you, scum!” Wang was a musician and appeared slender but he was quite strong, while Lu only appeared bigger. As he rained blows on him, Wang continued to berate him for bullying Xia Qingwei, for betraying her, how he did not deserved her, for hooking up with Xia Qingyang. At the side, Xia Qingyang watched with jealousy for she had a crush on Wang. The police arrived to break up the fight, with Wang still wanting to vent his anger on the scumbag.



998 – Xia was worried that his hands would be injured; it was too wasteful to get hurt against a scum. Lu Qiyuan was about to retort but found his face to be in pain. Wang said his hands were indeed in pain asked for a rub, causing Xia to be exasperated while FL could only look elsewhere as they openly displayed their affection. It pained Lu Qiyuan to see Xia to be so gentle and loving. He knew she never truly loved him, but it was enough for her to be his woman. He thought he could have a place in her heart if he had worked hard enough, but was always suspicious that she never forgotten her first love. He did not know who that man was but was very jealous when told by Xia Qingyang. Even though Qingwei never made a mistake and wholeheartedly worked hard for the family and business, he never thought that she loved him. This was how Qingyang had wormed her way into his heart. She had constantly brought up this ‘first love’ and planted suspicions in his mind; that only Qingyang could give him what he wanted. This then spread to Lu Man: if Xia Qingwei did not love him, why would he love Lu Man? The more Qingwei loved Lu Man, the more coldly he would treat Lu Man.



999 – Irritated seeing how Qingwei was so loving, Lu suddenly blurted snidely to Wang that she always had a man in her heart. Did you know that she had never forgotten that person; she will never love you whole-heartedly! This was of course Wang himself but Lu did not know nor did Xia want to explain as she never did him wrong, she never forgotten her first love but during their marriage she had been loyal to him. Lu Qiyuan thought Wang must be an idiot as he showed no reaction. They were about to leave but the police detained them for public disorder and sent them to the police station. Wang Juhuai (? Maybe an error in the text, it should be Xia Qingyang) asked if Lu Man had sabotaged ‘Performer’ to spite Lu Company. FL denied it and laughed it off: their ratings crash that caused Lu Company losses had nothing to do with her. Xia Qingyang: “But if you didn’t get Sun Yiwu and Jicheng, how would their ratings get crushed? And it was at the same time period as Lu Qi’s own performance too!” FL: “You must be joking. I must work hard for my own benefit; do you think I care enough about Lu Qi to expend my effort?”



1000 – Xia Qingyang continued to berate her, saying she shouldn’t have surpassed Lu Qi. Xia Qingwei was stunned to hear this firsthand and said: “Lu Qi had no talent, wants to be famous and yet still want to harm Lu Man? Xia Qingyang, don’t you feel superior to me? Is that why you think your daughter is also superior to mine? Are you very happy? But let me tell you this: you are never as good as I am and your daughter is never as good as mine!” Xia Qingyang then turned to Wang: “Now you see her real self? Always pretending to be gentle and contented, now you see her true face! Do you still like her? You have been tricked!” Wang unhesistantly answere: “Like! I like whatever she is. Besides, she said nothing wrong. How am I being cheated when she didn’t lie to me?” Xia Qingyang then demanded to know if Lu Man had deliberately tricked Lu Qi so that the Lu Company invested in ‘Performer’. FL sarcastically asked if she was being blamed for them losing money and mocked them for making a bad investment when things were going badly. They were interrupted by someone calling for Lu Man. She turned to see that it was Gu Nian, the wife of Chu Zhaoyang of the Chu Family. Gu Nian had been a criminal investigator but resigned to be in the Ministry of Public Information (not sure). Though she had resigned, she often returned to visit her ex-colleagues and foster cooperative work. Gu Nian greeted the police who were escorting them and asked what was going on (“conflict with ex-husband”) and quickly recognized Xia Qingwei as FL’s mother and introduced herself as Chu Zhaoyang’s wife. She had them released.

I usually don't post on weekends but here's a short update since I'm on a writer's block on my own story.

1001-1010

1001 – They were allowed to leave except for Lu Qiyuan. He demanded to know why and the police said he had a prior record. It was from the time he had been arrested for blocking off Xia Qingwei’s door to prevent Lu Man from filming. Meanwhile, Gu Nian escorted FL and her family out. Gu Nian was curious about Wang and he introduced himself as Wang Juhuai, fiancée of FL’s mother and they had intended to get a marriage certificate at the government office before the rude interruption from Lu Qiyuan. Gu Nian was surprised and congratulated them. Wang was especially happy and invited her to visit in the future and the made their way to the government offices. By the time Lu Qiyuan was released, they were long gone and the certificate already in their hands. Wang still could hardly believe that he finally got to Xia Qingwei. “It took me twenty years, finally we are married,” he said while laughing and crying. Xia herself was tearing up: “I… I am finally your wife…”


1002 – Seeing them together after resolving their missed chances and regrets made FL think about ML. After sending them home FL returned alone, teasing them that she would not be a third wheel as it was their wedding night. Wang was infinitely grateful to her; vowing that he would treat her like his own biological daughter. FL then video-called ML, first checking if he was busy. He showed her the pile of documents on his desk and she wanted to end the call. He frantically stopped her from doing so. FL said she did not want to disturb him.


1003 – ML insisted on continuing the call and so FL told him that Wang Juhuai and her mother Xia Qingwei had gotten a marriage certificate. ML was stunned at Wang’s speed when even he and FL haven’t gotten theirs yet. FL calmed him down saying they will meet and get theirs on the day after. ML was still peeved that he had followed Grandma’s schedule instead of getting it early. He insisted on coming back the next day. That night, FL couldn’t sleep well. She waited the whole day for him and became anxious when her calls did not get through to him. The servants tried to reassure her but she remained uneasy.


1004 – ML did not appear that day and FL reluctantly went to bed but unable to fall asleep. At 3am she could hear sounds of someone entering. FL was suspicious but quietly went to check and saw ML climbing the stairs. She called out his name and rushed down the stairs, ML went up to stop her from tumbling or jumping off. He scolded her for being reckless in the dark as they hugged. Before she could protest, ML cut her off by saying “don’t simply say things like you believe that I can catch you!” Relieved that he had returned, FL kissed him and then demanded to know why she couldn’t get through to him earlier.


1005 – ML could feel her trembling and apologized for trying to surprise her. He sheepishly admitted that he did it deliberately and did not expect her to be still awake; he had planned for her to wake up in the morning to see him in bed. Obviously FL gave him an earful even after ML tried to placate her. He promised to pick up her calls in the future no what the circumstances. But once in the bedroom, FL realized that the servants did not appear despite the commotion and was again peeved that ML went to such an extent. FL relented and ordered him to bed. However FL was still unable to sleep and they shared a talk in the dark, chatting about Wang Juhuai and Xia Qingwei. ML listened attentively as she finally drifted to sleep in his arms. He playfully pinched her nose as she slept. That morning, FL woke up to find ML in pins and needles as he had slept holding her the whole night. ML did not expect this and FL found it hilarious and massaged him.


1006 – They had breakfast and prepared to go to the government bureau to register their marriage. ML called ahead to inform his Grandma and only received a scolding for him to hurry up. He then called his mother Shen Nuo. She had already known about Wang Juhuai and Xia Qingwei and Shen Nuo proposed for a get-together to celebrate. ML and FL got into the car driven by Xiao Guo. Unknown to them, a gray car was immediately on their tail the moment they were out of the gates. The men inside confirmed that it was the same car in the photo they had been given.


1007 – They did not realize that Han Zhuoli was in the car as well: they were checking through their info and thought he was still away on the business trip and would only fly back this morning. Lu Man was probably leaving now to wait for him at the airport. The leader said whether she was going to the airport, the government bureau or to find someone, she had to be stopped. Meanwhile at Han Dongping’s office, his assistant updated him that Dai Yiran’s people were tailing Lu Man. Han Dongping nodded in satisfaction after being let down by Lu Qiyuan’s previous bungling. He had made sure that Han Zhuoli was away and though he did not expect Dai to take such physical action, he was more than happy to let it play out. Still, Han Dongping had written off Dai Yiran; she was stupid and no longer suitable to enter the Han family. In the car, Xiao Guo informed his passengers that they were being followed. ML immediately called for backup and to check on the number plates. The pursuers did not relent and ML belatedly realized that they were not for him, that they were targeting FL. He was not supposed to have returned earlier and therefore they must have thought it was only FL in the car.


1008 – ML’s heart was filled with anger. At first he thought they were targeting her because of him, but now there were people actually aiming for her. Who and why? There were too many people whom FL had offended including Han Dongping. His thought was interrupted by a report from Xiao Guo: the men were in place. ML ordered for him to slow down as he wanted to see what the pursuers were going to do. He held FL close to protect her. The pursuers actually rammed their car and forced it to stop. Nine men surrounded the car trying to get inside. They shouted to get Lu Man and pulled out their weapons, some anticipating ‘the taste of a star’ and made crude remarks about each having their way with her as they were paid to do. FL could hear their words and trembled while being embraced by the furious ML.


1009 – Barely containing his rage, ML gave the order and suddenly the men were ambushed by his guards who were lying in wait. The men were quickly subdued and ML strode out of the car and closed the door, not even letting them have a glimpse of FL. The men were stunned to see him. One of them actually tried play if off as a joke but ML recognized his voice and used his stick against him. He personally gave them a beating, with some of them pissing their pants in fear. He ordered: “Have them interrogated to find the mastermind, then hand them over to Mo Jingcheng. Torture them to death if they refuse to speak!” Even when one of them quickly yelled wanting spill the beans, ML did not want to believe them at this moment and had them taken away.


1010 – The men were dragged away, screaming about how they had been set up, they would have never attacked had they known ML was there. ML went back into the car, his face like a god of wrath. FL reminded him that she was safe. ML was annoyed that this happened because grandma used an almanac to decide on the date; otherwise they would have gotten the certificate earlier. FL soothed him, saying that he was there to save her because of grandma’s timing; otherwise he would be away and she would be doing something else and get into trouble. ML hugged her close and asked if she was afraid. She admitted that she was but fortunately with him around, she was not. She then asked if they were still going to get the certificate. “Go! Must go!” ML insisted. They finally went into the government office and emerged later with the certificate, with the ML beaming as he stared at the document. He then took out the ring and put it on FL. FL did the same to him. He looked at her and whispered: “Mrs. Han.”

1011 – “I have waited for a long time for you to finally become Mrs. Han. I can finally call you wife (wifey),” he said. “Call me ‘husband’ (hubby), I want to hear it. Come on,” he urged even though they were still at the government office’s doors. With a red face, FL stuttered before calling him ‘husband’. He pulled her in and kissed her and demanded to hear it again. FL repeated it and he twirled her around happily. In the car, he sent a photo of the certificate and called his Grandma. She was happy but wondered what took him so long; Wang and Xia were already waiting. She could hear something was wrong when he said he would explain later. At the Han family home, ML had everyone seated: Wang Juhuai and Xia Qingwei, his parents Han Xijin and Shen Nuo as well as his grandparents. He presented the certificate to grandma and then explained what had happened. Wang Juhuai was suspicious at the timing, was someone trying to prevent the marriage? First there was the matter of Han Dongping leaking Xia’s address to Lu Qiyuan and now this.



1012 – The Hans heard him and knew the pool of suspects was very small and the most suspicious was Han Dongping. Knowing that it was inconvenient for FL and Xia to mention it, Wang took the opportunity to ask the Hans if they knew what Han Dongping had done. None of them knew, not even ML. ML always had good relations with his two cousins but his uncle was becoming unbearable. Wang Juhuai told them how Han Dongping had leaked Xia Qingwei’s address so that Lu Qiyuan and Xia Qingyang could cause trouble. Fortunately security was there to stop them from entering. ML suddenly remembered that Zhou Cheng had indeed reported this to him, but he was too busy and caught up with the marriage certificate to have done anything about it. “If Han Dongping could leak this to Lu Qiyuan, what is to say that he couldn’t do the same to Dai Yiran?” Wang speculated.



1013 – Grandpa Han was furious but Wang Juhuai suggested that Han Dongping may have given the information but most probably was not stupid enough concoct the plot to harm Lu Man. He was actually correct: Han Dongping had indeed met Dai Yiran sometime ago to apologize; he could not help her get together with Zhuoli. She could not accept it and so he said “They are getting the certificate on the 9th, you can’t change his mind”. Han Dongping did not know that Dai Yiran already knew from Xia Yixin. In actual fact, Dai Yiran was introduced to Han Dongping by Xia Yixin. Xia Yixin knew that Han Zhuoling did not really love her and so she wanted allies in the Han family and planted the idea into her father-in-law Han Dongping to match Dai Yiran with Zhuoli. Han Dongping had no idea that he was being used… and now he’s taking the blame for the attempt on Lu Man. ML asked to have a serious talk with the grandparents and they agreed to move to the study. The rest of them, even though they are family; had to wait outside.



1014 – In the study, grandma thought it was too much to leave Xia Qingwei out but ML said he did not want to frighten or infuriate her. He then told them about the disgusting plans those men had for Lu Man. Grandpa Han thought it was bad enough that Han Dongping planned the attack, but to go this extent in order to stop the marriage was far too reprehensible. He decided to disown him. Grandma was shocked but Grandpa assured her that it was just Han Dongping alone, not his entire branch family. ML’s phone then rang: It was Zhou Cheng who had finished his interrogation and confirmed that the mastermind was Dai Yiran. He ordered for the evidence to be collected and forwarded. ML then told his grandparents that Dai Yiran was responsible.



1015 – The grandparents were relieved that it was her and not Han Dongping who ordered the men. Still, they could hardly believe the young girl was so vicious and ML could barely contain his anger. They went out and told everyone about Dai Yiran. Still, it was obvious that someone in the family had informed Dai Yiran, and so Han Dongping could not escape scrutiny. Grandma could only apologize to Xia Qingwei but the later said that everyone except Han Dongping had accepted Lu Man; that was more than enough. She truly did not care about Han Dongping, but Dai Yiran must be held accountable. Wang Juhuai agreed and switched the topic back to celebrating their certificates. It was fortunate that Grandma did not call for Lin Liye, Zhuoling or Zhuofeng, otherwise who knows how Han Dongping would end up.



1016 – After the lunch, ML and FL went back home. ML suddenly stopped at the door and told the puzzled FL: “Mrs Han, welcome home.” FL played along and told him to wait as she entered. Inside, the two servants who were waiting for their return were told to withdraw. FL told ML to press the doorbell and closed the door. ML did so and FL opened the door with a smile and greeted enthusiastically: “Husband, you’re home!” ML was stunned by this attack and smiled happily as she pulled him in and asked him to change his shoes. Off to the side the two servants watched blandly as the two played husband-and-wife. After this nonsense, FL remembered that she still needed to suppress ‘Performer’ and went back to work. The line up for the second show was revealed, a solid mid-tier cast that was being cheered on online by hired influencers. Lu Dongliu called as FL had yet to take action, she said she was getting ready. He felt assured by her confidence. Later someone commented that surely Lu Man’s 500-0 victory over Qiao Luna was faked as it was not possible. Who was her to accuse ‘Performer’ then?



1017 – It was a comment from a relative nobody, but it blew up once it was forwarded by the popular tabloid that had supported FL previously. The netizens were confused. What happened, all along they gave positive news and backing to FL, why the change? This became a hot topic and soon overshadowed ‘Performer’s advertising efforts. The drastic change in attitude from the tabloid was shocking and so discussion shifted to the 500-0 win. FL herself posted a reply: she had dared to ask the audience to raise their hands to confirm their votes; does ‘Performer’ dare to do it? Obviously this delighted her fans and they mocked ‘Performer’ for the dubious and hotly debated results of the past. The shady scandal of ‘Performer’ scripting and rigging up the show which had almost been forgotten had completely been brought back to light once more.



1018 – In the end it was ‘Performer’ who suffered. Ge Guangzhen was going crazy, the arrow he had fired towards FL ended up hurting his own show. Lu Dongliu on the other hand remembered FL’s words and refrained from responding and saw how ‘Performer’ was getting hit instead. Qiao Lun saw the 500-0 trending again and became speechless, how did it come back to her? Seeing how their media efforts were being shouted down by the netizens, Deputy Wu asked if they should invite some more stars to the show. He was amazed Ge said he would do it personally. However all of them refused. One of them finally revealed that they were told by Han Corp not to join ‘Performer’. Of course, this meant other companies cooperating with Han Corp and their shows would also be affected. And… well, ‘Performer’ itself is a controversial program, so it was no big deal not to join it… It was Friday night, while Classic X-Files and Performer were battling it out, Wang Juhuai was taking Xia Qingwei to the municipal dinner. Wearing the new clothes Wang Juhuai had bought for her, Xia Qingwei was nervous. It was the first official function she had been to as Lu Qiyuan had not been invited before; and when he was, it was after the divorce. Not everyone would be as understanding like the Han family.



1019 – Even in the Han family, wasn’t there Han Dongping. Wang Juhuai had her hold his arm and said: “Don’t be nervous, Mrs. Wang”. They weaved their way through the crowd. There were some who already recognized Wang… including Xia Qingyang and Lu Qiyuan. They were shocked to see them together. Lu Qiyuan quickly made his way to confront them, demanding to know what she was doing there. Lu Qiyuan did know who Wang was but said he did not belong here. He disliked seeing how natural and happy the well-dressed Wang and Qingwei looked together. How could she be happy being apart from him, wasn’t she poor and ill when they divorced? Didn’t that show how important he was to her?



1020 – When Wang tried to move around, Lu stood in their path to stop them. Xia Qingwei finally had enough and sneered: they were invited here. Lu Qiyuan did not believe it and was angry when he saw the disdain in her eyes. Lu said he was here because he was successful and important enough to be invited. Everyone here are political big shots and celebrities who had contributed to the city. You are an ordinary man, coming to join the fun? Not participating in our talks, coming here to lose face together with Xia Qingwei? If you are that desperate to come, why not ask me, why ask him?” They were interrupted by Mayor He. “Mr. Wang!” he called out and made a long, long way towards them with his wife. He welcomed Wang Juhuai and shook his hand joyously. Wang thanked him for the invitation. The mayor was very pleased at his arrival, having wanted to invite him for a long time. At first he was regretful when told of Wang’s plans to return to the US.



1021 – Mrs He chimed in, saying that she had been a fan of Mr. Wang for a long time. She was happy that he had finally arrived and asked for a photo and autograph. Lu Qiyuan was gobsmacked; this man was personally invited by the mayor! He only got his invitation after asking for one from the secretary, but Wang actually gotten a personal invitation! Wang modestly returned their greetings and said he changed his mind after reuniting with his beloved. He introduced Xia Qingwei as his wife, stunning them. Especially Lu Qiyuan who never dreamed it was possible for her to remarry. “Yes, I did not think I would be able to reunite with her,” Wang said. Mrs He of coursed picked this up. “We used to be lovers, but separated because of misunderstanding. We married others and experienced divorce for over ten years,” Wang said. Mrs He being his fan of course knew he had been divorced for over 10 years and was amazed that Xia Qingwei was the same. Truly, it was not easy for them to be apart for so long and get back together again.



1022 – Wang said regretfully: “I did not know she had been divorced for that long and suffered for over a decade. It was my fault, why I had been hiding? I thought she had her own family and so never dared to look for her. I was afraid of seeing her living well and disturbing her normal life. But it was good to return this time and finally met, finally we can be together. I won’t go back to the US. We have been apart for twenty years; that is our fate. Now there is no time to waste and so we got married. We have just gotten the marriage certificate on the 7th. Lu Qiyuan was stunned; didn’t he encounter them on that very day? They really couldn’t wait and went to get the certificate on that day itself? Wait… what was that about a reunion and used to be lovers? Was this man her first love, the one she had never forgotten? No wonder Wang Juhuai was happy when Lu Qiyuan had spitefully said those words that day. He was the fool all along, being laughed at in their hearts! His face was distorted as he heard Mrs He congratulated Wang and Xia Qingwei. “Do you plan to settle here then?” Wang: “Yes, of course I will be with her and live with her.” The mayor laughed jovially, thanking the new Mrs Wang to have given him the chance to invite Wang Juhuai to come. All the while, Lu Qiyuan stood by the side unnoticed, wondering who Wang Juhuai was for the mayor and his wife to be so polite.



1023 – Lu Qiyuan had never received such treatment. He could not help but to greet Mayor He who finally noticed that he was there. The Mayor remembered that when he caught sight of Wang, Lu was talking animatedly with him. And so he asked if they are acquaintances. Wang did not give Lu any face: “Not familiar. I don’t know why he tried to stop me, telling me that this place was not for the sort of people like me to come.” Mrs He was immediately unhappy. “Mr Wang is a world famous musician and composer. Who knows how many awards that he had won. Though he had lived in the US for many years, we have always insisted that he was a source of pride for Chinese musicians.” Lu Qiyuan could not believe it, this man was a national treasure? The Mayor was displeased; Lu Qiyuan was just a small businessman after all. “Do you know the name Wang Juhuai?” he asked. “You may not have seen him before, but surely you must have heard of his name.”



1024 – Lu Qiyuan was unable to accept that Xia Qingwei had become the wife of the famous musician Wang Juhuai. More and more people began to recognize Wang and Lu was squeezed out. One of those who approached Wang was Han Dongping, the greeting words on his lips stopped when he saw Xia Qingwei. Wang smiled and introduced her as his wife, and Han Dongping now realized that Lu Man had transformed from having a single parent into having a national treasure as a stepfather. He tried to smooth things over with Xia, but Wang say he ‘heard about you from my wife and daughter’. They were interrupted by Secretary Dai Rongcheng who greeted Wang.



1025 – Wang and Xia knew that Dai was the father of Dai Yiran who was responsible for the attempted attack on Lu Man. Dai was happy that Wang was settling in his city, and said his daughter was a fan of his and wanted to be his apprentice in violin. Obviously this was a method for her to get some status. Wang bluntly said that Di Yiran did not meet his standards. Dai Rongcheng assumed Wang meant the bad rumours surrounding his daughter and went on to say that he could take her as apprentice in name only.



1026 – Wang brushed it off, saying that everyone present had the same idea and he would be drowning with such ‘apprentices’. He needed real people with passion for learning; he did not care for their background. Dai was unhappy and pressed on, saying that he should give his daughter a chance and asked for the reason when it was again refused. Wang: “Secretary Dai, do you know why I know your daughter’s name? She is just a minor worker on a television network who had never won awards or accomplished anything famous. Yet, how did I know someone of that little importance? You seem quite proud of her and thought of her to be well-known. Even though I think my own daughter is very good, I have yet to thicken my face like you.” Dai Rongcheng felt disrespected and grew angry at his daughter being ridiculed. “Compared to what your daughter did, what I say is trivial,” Wang replied. Xia too was growing angry, but in her heart she was moved that Wang had said ‘my daughter’ in public. Dai knew Wang was childless but was cutoff by a cold laugh. Wang: “The name Lu Man. Have you heard of her? She is my wife’s daughter, and naturally is my daughter and we’re one family.”



1027 – Dai grudgingly admitted that he had ‘heard’ of Lu Man before. After all, he had bribed the judges of the Huayi Cup. Dai had felt it strange that Han Corp would do so much for Lu Man. So, was it because of her relationship with Wang Juhuai, was this why Wang was rejecting Dai Yiran. Wang: “And the reason I have heard of Dai Yiran was because Lu Man was nearly kidnapped, and the mastermind behind it was Dai Yiran. Based on this, why should I ever accept her as a disciple?” Dai Rongcheng was aghast and blurted that it was impossible. He truly did not know what his daughter had done. “Ask your daughter, but I think you won’t have the chance,” Wang said. On cue, five uniformed men arrived to ‘invite’ Secretary Dai to take a trip. He could only meekly follow them out. The banquet soon dissolved in a confused manner, the guests eager to disappear and afraid of being implicated. In their car, Xia Qingwei wanted to ask about Dai’s arrest, Wang only silently nodded in agreement, they both thought of the one person who would do it. At the Han family home it was Han Zhuoli who had passed on the incriminating evidence to certain people. Later there was news from the Dai family: Dai Yiran had gone missing ever since the 9th. Some even suspected that she had taken the valuables and ran away.



1028 – At that time, Dai Yiran did not expect for her men to be caught. She did not go to the banquet as she heard Han Zhuoli was not attending. She was clinging on the hope that his marriage to Lu Man was called off as there was no announcements yet. A distressed Mrs Dai returned home to wail that Dai Rongcheng had been arrested. She was talking with the ladies and saw her husband chatting with the famous Wang Juhuai. Suddenly five men appeared to arrest him. She had called many people but nobody dared to pick up her calls, not even the uncles and brothers. Dai Yiran was trying to calm her down when the doorbell rang again. This time it was the police.



1029 – They had come to arrest Dai Yiran for the kidnapping case. Mrs Dai tried to help her daughter but the police forcibly took Dai Yiran away. At the Han family home, ML and FL were watching tv when his phone rang. It was Mo Jingyi and ML thanked him. He then told FL that Dai Rongcheng and Dai Yiran had been arrested. The evidence was conclusive and they were just awaiting sentencing. FL nodded and ML completely approved of her lack of sympathy for the defeated enemies.



1030 – ML was going to make out with her but FL said she was watching ‘Classic X-Files’ for a reason. She began making notes on attention-grabbing clips and highlights to be forwarded to the various media, sparking wide interest and comments about the show. At his own office, Ge Guangzhen was still worrying about the ratings and the future of his own show. Wu arrived to show him the latest tactics from Classic X-Files that was sure to draw more viewers.

It may seem heavyhanded but it was an effective tactic as it was focused towards existing fans of Classic X-Files and let them be the word of mouth to attract new viewers. The timing as just before the broadcast of the show too, and it was like unscrupulous promoters standing on the doorstep of a rival hotel to pull customers into their own establishment. When Wu said this was all FL’s doing, the producers of ‘Performer’ did not believe it as her episode was already over. “You forget that she is not just an actress but also a PR consultant,” Wu said. Ge Guangzhen said he did well to analyze this, but why couldn’t he think of it instead of reacting passively.



1032 – Wu could only make up some excuse about how it was unsuitable for them to do it. Ge Guangzhen knew why FL was ‘venting her anger’ and killing their show. It was too late for him to say anything about her and revealed to the crew that Chairman Hu had given him an ultimatum. They were stunned to hear that they were on the verge of cancellation. This was Lu Man’s payback for snubbing her. They provoked her once and she retaliated endlessly to the point of killing off their show. Ge Guangzhen: “In the future, I will be polite when I see Lu Man. Don’t be like Assistant Director Xu Yaojie, offending people without reason. In the past we see Lu Man simply as an outsider, we did not know what she really like and looked down on her because of her young age. So we thought she only won because of flukes and coincidences. It is only after crossing paths that we know how difficult she really is.” Ge Guangzhen could not help but admit that he admired Classic X-Files and Lu Dongliu who not only accommodate Lu Man but even to cooperate with her to achieve much ratings success. Ge did not know what the other networks are thinking, but he will advise Chairman Hu not to provoke Lu Man in the future. As expected, the internet was abuzz about Classic X-Files.



1033 – Who is responsible for this? Who else but our goddess Lu Man! FL herself was curious about the ratings results. ML was confident of a victory but unsure if it would be as devastating as the previous time. The show was over and it was time to ‘sleep’. ML: “I was turned on from seeing you confidently handling business”. She yelped but reached to kiss him, saying “So many girls like you. Dai Yiran even went to jail because of you. But you are mine, and I am very satisfied.” “We’re made for each other,” ML chuckled. Suddenly he thought of something and went to open the safe and retrieved the marriage certificate. FL: “You actually put it in the safe?” ML: “Yes, because I am afraid you will get a divorce.” FL: “Firstly, I know the password for the safe. Secondly, we needed to be both present for a divorce.” ML suddenly felt his IQ had dropped several points after marriage. “I am just being careful,” he insisted. FL leaned close and held his chin: “And since I have such a good husband, I won’t get a divorce. I’m not stupid. Many are envious of me being so lucky to have met you and married you. Of course I would have to cherish this blessing. Why should I get a divorce? Don’t think of such nonsense, I won’t divorce you, I will never say those words ever!” ML grabbed her hands and she asked what he was doing. “Trying to find the best pose,” he said.



1034 – They interlocked fingers into a heart shape and showed off their rings for a photo. He even added a filter. ML then shared it to his group of friends, apologizing for his lateness to inform them that he had married FL. He waited happily for their reaction, only to receive nothing even after 15 minutes. “They are conspiring against me!” he exclaimed furiously. FL reminded him: “Quite a few of them are already married: Qi Chengzhi, Yan Beicheng, Qi Chenglin, Yan Huai’an, Wei Zilin... in fact, unmarried ones are very few…” ML: “That means the unmarried ones are jealous that I am now married!” “…Look at the time, they may be already asleep.” ML: “How could they sleep early? Each are in charge of their big families, if they don’t work overtime how could they be CEOs and Presidents?” FL: “Don’t forget most of them are married with children, maybe they need to rest as much as they can after accompanying their families.” He refused to believe it and he actually called them up one by one and told them to check on the Wechat group. “Oh, you’re not asleep yet? Even though ML let them all off to sleep, he was still awake admiring the photo and the marriage certificate. He then opened his Weibo to update. The last time he made a post was about his engagement. This time he uploaded the photo and posted: “From the 9th onwards, I am a man with a wife. Other ladies please stay away from me.” FL thought her man was very cute. But though ML was happy, he was getting fried in the comments. They admitted that the last sentence suited him well. The commenters were also envious at the lucky woman to have made so many ‘ex-wives’.



1036 – They felt that Han Zhuoli was a cut above from other rich and powerful people. Others had gossip about dating so-and-so stars and were full of scandals. But Han Zhuoli was never in the news. He was in charge of a media empire; there would be plenty of female artists who would play along with one’s whims and fancies. But he seemed to turn a blind eye towards them. Han Zhuoli and those from the 8 big families are simply different type of people. “So who’s his wife?” “It’s covered up so well, it can’t be a man, right?” “Please open your eyes and see, he’s obviously holding a woman’s hand.” “Ahhh, so envious! She allowed herself to be pampered. “No divorce!” ML insisted. “Even if I am jealous, it won’t be to the point of divorce,” FL said to assure him and they went to sleep. The next morning ML was already back to work. FL woke up later and called Lu Dongliu to check on the ratings. She was still too early but Lu Dongliu was confident, and he would send her the ratings later. Elsewhere, Ge Guangzhen was also waiting nervously. His assistant then walked in with a stiff expression…



1038 – Ge Guangzhen took the sheet of ratings results with fear. For the first episode they had the excuse of losing to Sun Yiwu and Jicheng, but what about now? To his pain, Performer only received 0.9972%, even less than the first episode. He felt his career to be bleak later, he would only get half the budget for any future programs. He hung on to the hope that the gap with Classic X-Files would not be too big… Elsewhere, FL received the results from Lu Dongliu: 1.8563%! Not quite as high as the previous but that would be the record for a long time. In fact, this was the second highest rating for the program. He praised her profusely, reminding her that the slight deviation had to take into account all the other networks. Though it might seem too blatant, perhaps he should invite her for another episode later…



1039 – FL laughed, saying it was too soon. Lu Dongliu said there would be a total of 13 episodes and she could be recording again as soon as the next month and would reward her handsomely. He thanked her for the influx of new advertisers desperate to buy up the slots in their show, and admired her modest behaviour and polite speech despite her great achievements. He asked her what was next, offering to sign her up and continuing her work. Lu Man hesistated and then asked: “Is Performer the only opponent for Classic X-Files? Once Performer had been knocked out, do you still need me to do the PR work? You are first in the time slot and first in the variety shows, it would be same if you did more media work. Do you still need me to promote?”



1040 – Lu Dongliu said Performer might attempt a comeback. “But what if there is no Performer?” FL asked. He left his words hanging but it was clear to FL: “Without Performer, you don’t need me on the show.” She went on to explain that the show was doomed because they can’t find any stars to guest on the show (she left out that this was because of her husband being the CEO of Han Corp). Lu Dongliu was shocked but FL was confident that Performer will be cancelled. Lu Dongliu assured her that it doesn’t matter once she signed a contract, but FL said she prefer to keep him as a friend and not purely business. Once Performer ended they will eventually exhaust the good friendship they had built up and make things awkward. Lu Dongliu understood and they ended the call amicably. In a good mood, he strode over to set to congratulate his crew and mentioned Lu Man in his thanks for their current success.



1041 – He reminded how capable she was and he would also inform the higher ups. Remember to be polite to her; don’t be like what happened to StarTV. Even if we have just a cooperative relationship, it won’t be bad for us. Don’t be slow with the little things with her. The crew agreed, knowing full well how much impact FL had brought to the show. The ratings were announced. Before Lu Dongliu could tell them about her prediction, another staff announced that Performer is going on indefinite hiatus, leaving him in awe of her. Online, the netizens laughed and credited FL for beating down Performer. Not Classic X-Files, but it was FL’s work and scripting. They recognized the signs from the media work. He had ranted to cause trouble for her and make her an outcast… but it only reminded the producers of other shows to hurriedly contact FL. She began to receive plenty of offers to help plan the marketing of their shows, she could only politely promise to consider them. Meanwhile, a regretful Lu Dongliu slapped his thigh. He remembered the question asked by FL: “Without Performer and your show is at the top, do you still need Lu Man?”



1043 – He should have been more intelligent. Just because he no longer needed Lu Man doesn’t mean other programs won’t look for her to promote their own shows. What was he going to do then? No, he needs to personally tie her up in a contract to prevent her from helping other people! Lu Dongliu then called her and immediately heard the dryness in her voice: surely her phone had been ringing nonstop. “Thanks to Xu Yaojie,” she confirmed. When they realized that none of them had secured her services but it was still Classic X-Files, they were indignant and annoyed. In the end, the one who laughed last was Classic X-Files, the biggest winner was Lu Man. Though ‘Performer’ was cancelled, it was not the biggest loser. Ge Guangzhen and his crew still had careers; they could go on to work on other shows. The network was not too perturbed, they would put another show in the timeslot.
