Rowena rode the same carriage with Killian. Meanwhile, Damian rode with Killian's secretary (?). The secretary knew right away that Damian was Killian's son from how resemble he was with his boss. But he just kept it for himself (because he pittied Rowena and gave her chance to explain it to Killian herself, I think). When they arrived at Duke's mansion. Rowena's room was located near Killian's bedroom. He frequently visited Rowena when he had a chance. Rowena feeling toward him wasn't the same like she first met him. Now the most important person for Rowena was Damian. She didn't want Killian knew about Damian's identity. She afraid Killian would took Damian from her and society would label him as Duke's illegimate son. It would became worst when Killian marry another woman later on. Meanwhile Damian stayed at different floor, because Killian didn't want to see another man's child. And Rowena needed Killian's permission to meet with her son. Rowena resume her social life as Killian's mistress. The noble still didn't like her. But there was one Countess that kind to her. She became Rowena bff in the capital. The Countess hold kinda higher position in social world so people didn't openly mock Rowena when the Countess around. The letter that Rowena had waited come. It was from her uncle. So she made her escape plan to hire her uncle as Damian's teacher. She asked Killian for permission, then he agreed. HIS SIDE: Killian could finally breath again when Rowena came back. He would do romantic things for her but Rowena didn't care much. She would constantly show him a smile but he knew that her smile was fake one, not the old Rowena that he knew. It was not important for him as long as she stayed by his side. He got irritated that she gave birth to another man's child. But the curiosity got him. He visited Damian room in the middle of the night, then he knew who he was. (Well this is the cliche 'how rare the black hair and eye is..' and 'damn, he is the mini me'). From this point on, he saw Rowena in different light. The narration went like, "You even gave birth to my child alone. I will put you and our child in the rightful place", while he kissed the sleeping Rowena. He made a plan to propose Rowena, to make her his Duchess and announce Damian as his successor. HOW FATHER AND SON RELATIONSHIP GOING: So Killian would show up in the middle of the night in his bedroom or when he played at garden but he would suddenly disappear. One day Damian asked where he was and said that he like a ghost. Killain said "Maybe I am." From then on, Damian would called Killian 'uncle ghost'. Killian would sometimes accompany Damian while he played.
I'm kinda lazy to continue reading the novel tbh, but I'll try to read more. One thing for sure, he's not dead. No, he didn't love his dead fiancee. He only had feeling for FL. His solution was, "Well why don't we make things public?". So he made a plan where he would propose Rowena with his mother's necklace in public and with a little help from the Countess (Rowena's suppose new bff). Rowena's Plan: She would hire her uncle as Damian's teacher. When they finally met, they made their plan together. So the uncle gave her solution, "Why don't we make us three (Rowena, Damian, the Uncle) died? So he will not search for you and your son again." How the Things Going: 1. The Proposal Killian gave Rowena a necklace and asked her to wear it at tonight party. She didn't know the reason, but still wearing it anyway. They went together. Killian really proposed in front of a lot of people. The Countess went like, "Oh God, he must be love you so much. He even gave you his late mother's necklace." Rowena kinda dumbfounded but she managed to think that the proposal as an opportunity. As far as I can remember, she only said that she would accept his proposal. She never said that she would marry him. So there were words play going on. Rowena asked Killian, "I want our wedding held at your private island." The same island where Killian had his first wedding. Killian agreed. 2. Escape Plan So Rowena and the Uncle made plan to escape by the sea. One day before the wedding, three of them would take a trip by the boat. That day from the climate prediction, there would be a bad weather going on. So they would cover their death as an accident. (Personally I think this is the dumbest escape plan everrr. If I position myself as a mother, I will not put my child in that dangerous situation.) So before they went to the island, both Rowena and Damian would practice swimming (the Uncle teach them, lol. He literally can do anything). Meanwhile, Killian asked a famous painter to make Rowena's portrait. But when he at the part where he should paint Rowena's face, he always felt like Rowena's expression not the one that he wanted. So from then on, he would follow Rowena around until he got the expression that he wanted. 3. The D-Day So the wedding preparation went smoothly. The guests even arrived at the island. One of reason why Rowena choose her escape's time around the wedding's time, because there would be many people witness her death. Then day one before the wedding, Rowena asked Killian's permission to take trip by boat with her son. She wanted to spent her time with Damian before her wedding. Killian got no reason to decline, so he permit her. Rowena was escort by many Duke's people ofc, even the painter. But she insisted that she would take the boat only with her son and her son's teacher. Before they departed the painter asked Rowena to smile for the last time. She really did smile sincerely. That was the expression that he wanted. They departed, the big waves really did come, their boat turned, they swim to a save place. The people seached for them but found nothing. The wedding got canceled. People assumed that they were dead. But not with Killian. The first time he heard about the accident, he went straight to the harbour. He searched without rest for Rowena and his son's whereabout. He didn't believe they were dead. He was at that state for a few months (6 months if I'm not wrong). He would stare at Rowena's finished portrait and asked himself "Why would you smile like that?" Killian never came back to capital and handle his business by long distance. It was his underling that suffered because their boss refused to return. A little bit of fyi: So the Countess was like the late Duchess's friend. The late Duchess = Killian's mother. So she knew about how precious the necklace was. The Countess kinda knew that Damian was Killian'son. She got his glimpse at the carriage. Actually I kinda forget was it at sea or lake. The place where the escape happened. But I'll assume it was the sea. The next spoiler will be about their second reunion and the appearance of 2ndML.
it turns out that FL is not that weak, she doesn't even give killian the slightest chance but just takes advantage of it. This man needs to roll more, so he knows what it's like to be abandoned by a loved one.
