Well, the reason she is lying bcause the ML forbid her doing anything but waiting for him in bed with 'dinner' plate, she knew perfectly well the ML only show kindness if she behaved like obedient dog licking his hand (literally), so if he knows she has a job, only heavens know what's gonna happen to her.

He wouldn't allowed her to, beside they are in a contract relationship where he could discarded her at his please and FL was scared of that, FL just want to be a writer, it's her dreams, but ML just want a doll, there is a time when she is sad bcause the talk about her being a mistress so she keep quite during the ride home, the ML 'punished' her to take off his glove using her mouth, there is also a time she is late or something, the ML didn't visit her for a weeks, she is afraid and lonely, she has no one in the mansion she could rely to, the ML is her lifeline. You shouldn't forget the ML investigated about her at the beginning and found out she is a 'Prostitute', he feel betrayed and fooled bcause she looks so innocent but then he think it was better it relieve his guilt, he could play with her till he is bored and throw her away, but they are so compatible in bed and she is such a cute and obedient puppy, he feels like there is no reason to abandoned her yet so he keep telling himself 'I'll throw her away later' and just like that another year passed, even when the FL whispered 'sweet love' everytime, he think's it's a lie, a lip service by the skilled 'Prostitute' Iirc, the truth wasn't really matter to him after all she is a 'Prostitute', he just need a reason to throw her away, but it's beyond his calculation that he would have insomnia after she left, one of the reason why it took him so long to found her bcause he didn't realize what he lost, it took him a few years to put himself together before he finally began searching for her.

If you have read under the oak tree you know that maxi even though she was abused all her life she she wanted to achieve smthing and she argued with riftan and disagrees with him even if she loves him. Then the love in this novel and the determination of this fmc is just laughable. She was raised in a normal family yet hangs on to ml content of what he gave her knowing he might throw her away one day without any plan for the future, she has zero learning ability.
though I do agree with you, but I kinda understand her, she wasn't raised in normal family, she lose her parents when she is a child then her relatives took over her inheritance (or was it debt, kinda forgot), getting tossed her and there till her maternal uncles took her in, but he is a busy Writer, he travels a lot too, FL practically growing up by herself, she is barely legal (one of the reason why the ML gave up to play with her at first) when she came to the capital with the persuasion of her friends but the so called friends has been using her name working as prostitutes. When the ML first investigated about her, he found out that 'Rowena' is tricking several nobleman and taking a huge debt with the loan sharks, he knew she is in dire situation, but he didn't 'saved' her right away, he is waiting till she is so desperate so she would be more indebted to him later and it would be much easier for him to wield her around, the FL was getting chased by thugs when ML rescue her like a knight in shining armor and offered her the contract, sure he wasn't an abuser but he is manipulative and ever since then she has been groomed by the nanny/headmaid to fit his taste, she instilled it in the FL brain 'the ML doesn't like inexperienced virgin, so from now on you should learn how to appease a man unless you want to be kick out', 'You should wait in his bedroom before he comes home', you should do this and don't do that.
