The thing was, there was a very clear line drawn between inter-cultivator sect or lineage business that was mostly jianghu business and actual inter-country warfare.

Cultivator lineages fought each other covertly or visibly all the time, but actual warfare? Not so much. The empires could afford to lose this or that cultivator, minor sect, lineage or small clan rather than commit themselves fully to war.

Starting a war was quite different from sending assassins, mercenaries, saboteurs and murderers. In wars, even the civilians had raised taxes imposed on them, and armies were sent out, massive resources were martialed, war chests were spent, supply lines established, at visible cost to both countries involved with significant financial repercussions. So as a result, the covert cultivator war had been what ensued instead.

The empires would turn a blind eye as Shuiyan sent assassins and rogue cultivators or evil sect members out to kill her former family or as that family fought back, as long as nothing else other than that family or Shuiyan herself went down in flames.

That was why Wu Meiyan had come to Cang Qiong Sect.

The Chen clan was all very good and well among minor cultivators, but they had suffered setbacks from a group of drunken kung fu masters who apparently had been insulted by a Chen clan young master and as a result taught them consistent bitter lessons in defeat because they scorned them for their behavior, and her own Wu clan needed a stronger shield than that.

When it had become known that her former fiance had become a well known, powerful, demon exterminating Qing Jing Inner Sect disciple, the elders had jumped at the chance to send her there in hopes that she might get him and his peak lord to intervene on their behalf.

Cang Qiong was one of the four great sects, not a minor lineage like theirs or the Chen clan's. They had more artifacts, more firepower. Even if it was only Wanyong who came, he would still be an immense help, since he probably could also make artifacts, like the rest of his peak.

And everyone remembered that he had been head over heels for Meiyan. That was why she had come; everyone was counting on her.

She hadn't reckoned on his peak lord's refusing to let her near him or sending him out on constant missions so they would not meet at all

She's really shameless along with her clan elders... after what they've done to Wanyong they had the gall to seek him to be their shield? Where's Smaug? let's just roast the bitch slowly..keeping her alive long enough to really regret it....
