The thing was, in the West, where G came from, even supervillains apparently had standards.

You didn't get supervillains who tortured people with slow slicing, for one. Their version of the thousand cuts was exsanguination, cuts thin as paper cuts, literally causing their victims to bleed out rapidly and die from bloodloss. They didn't go around torturing people for information, that was what psionics were for; literally ripping information out or reading minds. That was what you had scry and fry for.

They didn't allow pedophilia, and heaven certainly wouldn't help the goddamn paedobear that targeted actual children instead of the people who went around childlike avatar skins.

The Western system had uplifted a forum that strictly stuck to the eighteen and above only forum rules.

True, they did go for the planetwide genocides, but whatever else could be said about them, they had standards.

The thing was, even the supervillains had actual, understandable reasons for their behavior.

You didn't get pointless sadists there, short of the NPCs made specifically to be torn down, because anyone stupid enough to go around tormenting their fellow players and torturing them was basically putting a massive target on their own backs, asking to be tortured and torn down in return.

Acting with less than a hundred percent adherence to the forum rules?

That Banhammer was going to go in deep and hard, and with no goddamn lubrication.

And if your mods didn't beat you to oblivion, your fellow players would hunt you down like the hounds of hell.

Between the players, the gms, the mods, and the Unholy, Eldritch Abominations that were Reaperman and Earthscorpion?

The West had been very, very well regulated.

The mods and admins were tyrants, yes. Despots, yes.

But a western mod didn't bother to cover up shit.

If a mod was going to goddamn come down upon this base earth to smite you, he was going to goddamn well come right down, full latin chanting, full ominous background music, all obliterators blazing and anima banner covering the fucking sky.

And he wouldn't make excuses for his behavior either.

He would just tell you where you fucked upand then ban you so hard your descendants to the fiftieth generation were going to feel the burn.

As it was above, so it was below.

As the mods did, so did the GMs. A proper Western Gm admitted to tyranny without even blinking, enforcing the forum rules with the ferocity that was in their nature.

    Mandate of heaven?

Mandate of fucking Malfeas, you mean.

In the West, the appearance changed as the players saw fit, and it didn't matter whether someone looked monstrous, or had a non euclidean form- what mattered was what you did with your life.

Look at your life, look at your choices.

It wasn't like the whole 'cool and elegant, free and easy' righteous cultivators, hiding their blackbellied face bullshit.

In the West, it didn't matter if you called someone a motherfucker, or a bastard, or anything else for that matter. It didn't matter what you looked like or what race you were. What mattered was whether you lived by the forum rules.

You had a problem, you pvp-ed it out until you settled things.

You had a plan or a plot, you laid it out, and hashed things out with your fellow players.

You didn't go around backstabbing people in Game. Not if you didn't want to be blacklisted and set to spend the rest of your in and out of Game life getting pvp-ed and pk-ed by everyone you pissed off.

If a Western Player was going to help you, what you saw was what you got.

If a Western Player offered a straight up alliance, that was exactly how things would go.

Western players were direct, vicious, sharp and fast, but they were also reliable, loyal and principled.

You did not get a Western player who was going to wreck your shit after siding with you. It was all or nothing.

This was exactly why G had honestly admitted to hating the so called righteous cultivators of this world. He hated them, frankly, BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T REALLY RIGHTEOUS.

If they were going to go around wearing the title of 'Hero', godfucking damnit, they were supposed to be heroic! Anything less was an offense to the term 'righteous'!

When G had been among his own kind, he had been a card carrying villain because he wasn't the kind of man or woman who made excuses for shit!

"If I'm going to goddamn blow up a fucking planet, I'll own up to it. If I wreck someone's goddamn day, I'll own up to it. And if I'm going to goddamn loot, pillage and burn, I'll fucking own up to that too!"

Those words had been spoken during one of the defining moments recorded in G's past lives. Right before, "I DO WHAT I WANT!"

Of course... the context had been that he had been burning down an entire human trafficking ring and looting the slavers to the bones at the time.

The thing was, everything the Western players did had context.

For one, G's guild had pretty much specialized in wrecking entire territories once someone pushed their berserk buttons. That was why the guild's players were known to be card carrying Evil Overlords in the first place.

The vampire was an anarchic communist who had personal freedoms as his big thing. The Trap GM had gone around genderbending everyone and everything for the lolz and G? G and his tentacled (or bearded or metallic skeleton) BFF had been the Papist Inqisition.

The West didn't make for uniformity when you could look however you wanted, whenever you wanted and had complete control over your form.

Thirty players in the guild, and no two were exactly alike, with at least half being nonhumanoids, anywhere from beast-formed, to monstrous to mechanoids.

Thirty players who worked side by side and treated each other like siblings.

Gentle fingers brushing his hair away from his face, tucking strands behind his ears, warm arms to hold him close, a kind, soothing voice and the press of soft lips onto his forehead.

Luo Binghe was warm and comfortable, feeling treasured and well loved.

This..the last time he had felt this much affection poured out upon him was when he had been a child too, then in the arms of his foster mother. Those years of childhood had been fleeting and short, but he remembered them deeply, missed her even to this day.

Even when he had no food, even when he had been hungry and cold, he at least had his foster mother's love.

Those years had passed so fast, leaving him grasping. The worst had been that he had never been able to give his mother all the things he had wanted to give her. Now that he was strong, she was long gone.

When she had been alive, he had barely been able to get her food and medicine, barely been able to care for her the way she had cared for him. She had slipped through his fingers as all good things seemed to slip through his fingers.

When he had been an adult, women had sought him out, had 'loved' him and admired him, but the way they felt about him...they 'loved' him because they saw him as a hero. As an incredibly strong, elegant, handsome man with a smooth, polished manner.

If so, what did they 'love'? Did they even love 'him' or was it just what they thought he was?

He knew that Sha Hualing, for one, was obsessively desiring his attention, but she didn't know 'him'. She just thought she did.

Would she even have been so greedy towards him, would she have fought so hard just to have his children and want him as a person if she really knew what he was like under the facade?

    ***
He had gained Liu Mingyan's attention and desire when she saw how strong and skilled he was in battle against demons when the peak had been invaded by Sha Hualing, and held it by helping her get her vengeance on...on the Shen Qingqiu who had made his life hell. Two birds with one stone; he had gained the beauty's 'love' and desire while ridding himself of an enemy.

He had gained Wanrong and Wanyue by helping them in the Jue Di Gorge during the immortal alliance conference. They and the others had followed him because he had saved their lives.

If it wasn't for his 'heroic' actions, would they even have 'loved' him?

Ning Yingying, he had also saved time after time, promising to make himself strong so he could keep her safe. And before that, she had liked him because of his looks.

Wasn't it then his looks and strength that she also desired from him?

If so, what other than his strength, his skills, his techniques and his 'free and elegant', 'smooth and polished' demeanor did people love about him?

He had saved so many lives and been praised for those. Such a reputation he had.

He had ruined that Shen Qingqiu's reputation but where all the others had abandoned that Qingqiu, that Yue Qingyuan had still stayed by his side even when that Shen Qingqiu had nothing left to offer. Had died trying to save him.

If that had happened to him and he lost his reputation, his wealth, his power and his looks, would anyone still stay by his side? Would anyone still try to save him if that had happened to him?

Now, here he was again, small and helpless imprisoned in the weak body of a child, and even if he didn't like it, it was worth it to be held like this.

To be loved again. Not because of what he was capable of giving or what he was capable of doing, but because... because he was loved. An affection that wasn't rooted in anything Shizun could gain from him, or in anything he could hope to gain.

Shizun loved him now, just as he was, and asked nothing from him.

    ***
The problem was, Luo Binghe needed people to need him. He needed people to want him. He needed those around him, especially those he cared for, to crave his presence, to desire him.

Sha Hualing's very obsessiveness towards him made her valuable to him. The more she fought the other women in his harem for him, the more wanted and desired he felt. That...was why he didn't really interfere with the struggles in the harem. Because the more they fought, meant the more they wanted him. They were fighting over him, fighting for him, because they wanted him. Because he was valuable and important.

He knew it was an obsession of his, knew that being wanted and needed by those around him provided meaning to his life. Being desirable, being desired made him important, made him special, gave meaning to his life and a reason to keep going.

His parents hadn't wanted him. His father hadn't wanted him. His mother had wanted his father, not him. Shen Qingqiu hadn't wanted him. Yue Qingyuan had put Shen Qingqiu first; Luo Binghe had been but an afterthought until he was too strong to suppress.

Everyone other than his foster mother had wanted something from him.

His harem wanted sex. They called it love but what it was, was really sex and attention, fine things and physical pleasure.

Luo Binghe had come to understand that that was what most people wanted from him.

What Luo Binghe needed, for himself, was for everyone whom he cared for or wanted to want him and need him in some way in return, so that they would never leave him.

That...that was part of why he liked sex so much. It felt good, it made him feel he was good, gave him control over others, over himself.

    ***
Shizun didn't want the adult Luo Binghe. He didn't want to touch him, didn't want to be near him.

Shizun....Shizun was the one person who Luo Binghe wanted to be with, who didn't want Luo Binghe back. Not as an adult.

As a child, Shizun loved him. As a child, Shizun treasured him. There was literally no way he could doubt that, not after Shizun had protected him this many times.

As a child, Luo Binghe had nothing he could give him to make sure he would continue to love him, continue to stay by his side, but he stayed anyway.

But as an adult... As an adult, Luo Binghe could offer Shizun the world. He could offer Shizun all the luxuries of the world, all the physical pleasures he could think of...But as an adult, Shizun wanted nothing from Luo Binghe.

    No, that wasn't completely accurate.

As an adult, Shizun wanted to be as far from Luo Binghe as possible, and Luo Binghe couldn't accept it.

    ***
Actually, he had thought...Maybe Shizun just didn't like sex.

But he'd been proven horribly wrong when he had caught sight of Shizun with Yue Qingyuan in one of those dreams.

That....that was when he learned what making love was supposed to mean, because there was really no other way to describe how Shizun was with Yue Qingyuan.

Shizun caressed Yue Qingyuan tenderly, kissed him lovingly, held him close, snuggled against him.

Shizun stroked and touched every part of Yue Qingyuan's body as if every part of him was perfect, flawless, precious beyond anything Luo Binghe had ever known.

Shizun coaxed Yue Qingyuan into ecstasy over and over again, taking his own pleasure from Yue's comfort and pleasure. He lavished attention on Yue Qingyuan as if he was the only person in the world, pressed fervent kisses to his skin, completely lost in Yue Qingyuan's embrace, all dignity forgotten.

Shizun was an eager, considerate, careful, gentle, tender, affectionate and intensely focused lover whose greatest joy was his partner's ecstasy.

Shizun....Shizun liked sex. Shizun liked sex as much as he did. Shizun.... just didn't want to have sex with Luo Binghe.

    ***
It hurt Luo Binghe to see it.

To see that Shizun was completely devoting everything to Yue Qingyuan in a way he refused to share with Luo Binghe.

A part of him wanted to hurt Shizun for not giving him that, not...not giving him everything. Another part of him wanted to wail and beg and demand to know why Shizun couldn't love him that way. Why Shizun couldn't touch him like that, couldn't give him that love, that lovemaking, that complete attention.

The rest of him wanted to peel them apart, rip Yue Qingyuan away and throw him far away from Shizun, because.... because he wanted Shizun to love him like that.

Because he wanted Shizun to look at him like that always, not just when he was a child.

He wanted to be treasured like that, but Shizun gave it to Yue.... It was just as when he had seen that Yue Qingyuan had given that devotion to that Shen Qingqiu.

It was like he was out in the cold again. Like he wasn't good enough, not important enough, not precious enough, not...not wanted enough... because... because Shizun wanted Yue, not him. Shizun was attracted to Yue, not him. Shizun treasured Yue, not him.

Sex was a means of control, something he had been able to hold over anyone, to make them want him, make them stay with him... But the sex he had seen between Shizun and Yue Qingyuan had been more than that.

And Shizun... Shizun didn't want to have sex with Luo Binghe. Shizun didn't want to touch Binghe like that.

Shizun wasn't willing to touch him like that.

Shizun wasn't willing to let Luo Binghe touch him like that.

    Shizun didn't want him.

Three hundred and sixty five places they had been together. Three hundred and sixty five times he had been carried, through fiery, obsidian strewn canyons, through icy wastelands with treacherous waters. Through deserts with cacti and giant vipers, through jungles with man eating plants.

    And now this.

Once again, Shizun was injured because he had been protecting him. His left arm had been broken, the bone partially crushed. It was held together with vines, the flesh itself black with infection from those monstrous creatures' venom and was a gruesome sight. Just looking at it made Luo Binghe nauseous.

One leg too, had been bitten and was black with infection, supported by vines. They were woven into the very flesh itself- the one good thing about the beasts, Shizun had said, was that their poison made one numb.

It wasn't helping to look at it.. To see the vines moving to manipulate the broken limbs in place of bones and ruined nerves.

Luo Binghe himself, once again sealed in the shape of a child, this time was unable to access his spiritual powers. Useless.

Once before he had to watch someone he cared for, die, because he was powerless.

And now, it looked as if that would happen again. And there was nothing he could do, except cling to Shizun as he was carried, his eyes burning with tears that dripped uselessly down his cheeks.

No. No. This was not fair!
He'd torn those arms so many times himself, out of anger, out of jealousy, and yet they kept saving him.

He'd ripped off those legs over and over to make sure Shizun never ran from him, but those legs brought him back.

Did one year's worth of encounters, of such care and loyalty, such kindness and protectiveness outweigh five years of misery and abuse?

One year of shared meals, of bandaged injuries, of warm embraces, did they outweigh five of bitter beatings, starvation and bullying?

Why had he been hurt then but not now?

Viper bites and poison stings, claw wounds and fang bites... over the time they had been together the monsters had grown worse and worse. More and more numerous. The damage worse and worse.

And now this... A monstrous catacomb full of something Shizun called plague undead but were nothing like the Jiang Shi or undead that Luo Binghe was familiar with.

Himself unable to fight back, only carried in Shizun's good arm as Shizun did his best to avoid the traps.

Poison arrow traps, pit traps with spears, flyin darts, acid pits... the seemingly endless stone niches with their hidden snakelike winged monstrosities, the bipedal no longer humanoid slimy beings that Shizun called draugr, created from drowned men..

If Shizun died, Luo Binghe would not last long and he knew it.

Shizun's voice was bitter, as he seemingly spoke to thin air. "I know what I'm being punished for, but what the hell did this kid ever do to you to deserve this shit?! He's just a kid!"

    What.

    What was Shizun speaking to...?

To Luo Binghe's great surprise, an alien voice, like metal and ash, sepulchral and cold resonated through the cold tunnels, seemingly out of nowhere replied to his indignant Shizun with four chilling words.
    [You care too much.]

"What the hell's that supposed to mean?!" Shizun demanded, clearly enraged by this inadequate reply. "You cryptic sonobabitch, give me a damn answer!"

But the voice did not return. With no other recourse, Shizun ran for their lives, still carrying him, trying to find an exit.

Five times the winged creatures flew out, not merely one by one, but in groups.

Four times Shizun blew them to gore but the fifth, ah, the fifth group aimed for Luo Binghe.

He had squeezed his eyes shut, afraid of the pain, but felt nothing. When he opened them, his master was bleeding from another bite and extricating the cresture's decapitated head from his flesh.

The wizened, skull like head with its lamprey maw and its myriad fangs, falls to the ground, twitching.

He had been shielded. Again. Again. Why was it that he was kept safe with such devotion here and not treasured then? Why was he so kind here and never before, there? Why was.. why was he...

Why was it Shizun fled from him as an adult, hated him when he had been his student, but loved him as the child?

What had gone wrong with him...?

He knew. He knew. All those times he had hurt Shizun when he could not run fast enough to escape. All those times...He could not lie to himself.

Something was wrong, with him. Not... not this Shizun, but him.

After seemingly countless dead ends. After barely missing an acid pit, the end was in sight. It was a teleport formation.

But as they turned the corner, and Shizun ran with all the might he had left, the plague undead caught their scent. The monsters quickly took up the chase.

As they were sliding past them, Luo Binghe thought that they would soon be free.

But his hopes were dashed at the last minute.

There was a tentacled thing in an alcove, almost to the teleport formation.

It caught hold of Shizun's ankle dragging them both.

If Shizun put him down, he could blast the thing's tentacles off. He had one good arm left and Luo Binghe was carried in it.

He could get away, but Luo Binghe might die. That creature might take him instead.

With no options and little time left, Luo Binghe saw his master's jaw tighten as he made his decision.

The last thing Luo Binghe sees as he is freed from this nightmare, is Shizun.

Shizun who throws him into the teleport formation even as he is pulled back by the mawed tentacle beast.

Shizun, whose torso and legs are crushed to a gory, black, pink and red pulp, bone splinters gleaming white in the cold light, ruined by a crushing stone block that rises and falls like an executioner's sword.

    Luo Binghe awoke screaming.

In general, waking up from one of those dreams when he was being cuddled by Shizun as a child or even as a small dog tended to leave Luo Binghe in a very good mood.

Well, mostly a very good mood. Luo Binghe never liked being a dog and those dreams always started off with a certain bastard with wings being cursed out.

This time he had fortunately not been a dog. As a four year old child, he had clung, pouting, to his Shizun all throughout the day, refusing to be separated from him, seated himself in his warm lap and traced letters onto paper as Shizun had taught him writing...which he already knew.

Faking being a child was tedious, pretending he didn't know things and was just learning them was boring, but being cuddled and praised was sweet and negated every bit of that boredom and tedium.

He hated it when the people in those dreams had been looking at his Shizun too closely for his liking.

Bad enough that Luo Binghe now knew that he had fucked up their initial interactions, ruined their first year of meetings and left Shizun so utterly terrified of his adult self to the point that he avoided him as much as possible; he didn't need any competition for Shizun's attention when he was a child, too.

Luo Binghe hadn't liked the loss of Shizun's attention at all. Fortunately for his temper, Shizun had only laughed at his sulkiness last night and kissed his cheeks more often, rubbing his back.

Mmm, Shizun cuddles. Even now he just wanted to go back to bed and look for him.

Sticking his hand under his pillow, though, gained him quite a surprise.

    Clay figurines.

Very familiar clay figurines. Just big enough for a child of three to play with, without being able to swallow them- figurines that were a year old at least.

His heart beating madly, he reached out to sense the qi inside.

Ah, it was familiar. So familiar. So warm. That qi was so recognizable, so filled with affection. His eyes itched and soon were damp. Warmth flooded him.

Did... did this mean that person was real?

Real like the other Shen Qingqiu who loved his counterpart? The Shen Qingqiu who he had met, held, touched and almost managed to claim?

It had been bitter to him, unacceptable to him that the other Shen Qingqiu had cared for his counterpart while the Shen Qingqiu he had first known had not been like that for him.

    But.. these toys changed things.

Was his Shizun, the Shizun who treasured him as that child in the dreams at night.. was he out there? Could he claim him, bring him home?

But... But that Shizun was so frightened of his adult form. He had to find some way to undo that first. Some way to soothe him and coax him and make Shizun love him.

There had to be some kind of option, some kind of method that would put him at ease.

    CANDIES, YAAY! Time for binge-reading~:blobpopcorn:
Those 'Righteous Cultivators' are traitorous backstabbing bastards:blobdevil:
    Curb-stomped them G!:blobhero:
I can literally feel Bing-ge flame of jealousy and gloomy cloud of depression :blobpeek:
Must be pretty traumatic for Bing-ge to wake up screaming... How many times did G dies saving Bing-ge and Bing-ge watch them all happening?
...er, I don't think it will ever be possible for for you to claim Shizun, Bing-ge. Similar to an uphill battle with the hill taller than mt. Everest and invested with eldritch abominations eagerly out for your blood; and you're just a normal human being. Or maybe Sisyphus and his impossible task (punishment) in hell.

The Pavilion of Past Lives was one of those incredibly rare, valuable Qi Artifacts that was known throughout the world, one that was too big to uproot and too valuable to even try to, because of the possible damage.

It was the pride and joy of the Empire and its Imperial Family, throughout all the dynasties of the past, said to have been built by The Yellow Emperor himself before he ascended to divinity. Its ability to show the past lives of all the people who entered it had made it the most well attended, treasured artifact in the Empire... because it was the most entertaining ...and the most scandalous.

People still gossiped about the Wang Fei whose past life was that of a fishmonger's wife, behind her back, for instance.

That Wang Fei had prided herself upon her scholarly air and lineage of a well known scholarly family. She had looked down on her sisters in law, seeing them as inferior.

Walking the Pavilion had thrown all her pride into the sewer. To this day, the entire city laughed at her behind her back.

Her husband had hated everything about her when she had been bestowed upon him but only when she walked the Pavilion did he finally know why she was so unsatisfactory when compared to his elder brother's wife.

His elder brother's wife, you see, had been a virtuous court dancer who had prevented a war in her past life by coaxing two diplomats into smoothing over an argument.

While she, the scholarly Wang Fei of impeccable lineage?

She had been a fishmonger's wife, loud and strident, and prone to throwing tantrums, all traits she had retained in this life, which her husband now took as a reason to break their marriage and divorce her for, citing continual disrespect towards her in laws and sending her back to her family with every evidence of relief now that he had an excuse to do so.

What could you call a completely platonic relationship that lasted for literally multiple lifetimes?

What could you call a friendship, a brotherhood that lasted not merely one life, but myriad lives, one after the other?

What did you call the kind of relationship with its own in jokes, several of which came from long ago lives, but were still so current between them that Shizun tended to collapse in laughter, reduced to clutching at his friend and wheezing like a small, trapped kitten?

What kind of relationship could encompass a friendship where it didn't matter what the body looked like or what species it was, both people still called each other brother?

The thing is, while people knew the god in the moon set up people's love lives, tying them together with red strings, and people knew that one's blessings in this life came from the karmic merits of one's past lives, while it was known that one's relationships from a past life could follow one to the present, often in the forms of love affairs spoken about in romances...

No one had ever seen this in actual, visible action before.

    Not until now.

And certainly no one had ever seen or believed that anything could happen like this.
