A Dream Demon's Odyssey
Aka The Gods Must Be Crazy

The Dream Demon's greatest fear and the main subject of his worst nightmares ever since his tribulations was for his soul to dissipate and for each piece to fly away, scattered to the four corners of the heavens.

To lose all his cultivation, the fruit of all his hard work, to become nothing more than a whisper on the wind.

He had clung to life for so terribly long, even dwelling in dream realm after dream realm like some sort of parasite rather than taking a chance with reincarnation, that the mere thought of having his souls fly apart gave him a constant sensation of terror.

Then he had found himself in that horrible, horrible world where people could lose their humanity or their souls after they were killed and the creeping sensation of losing his souls, of losing his 'humanity' had been even worse than he had ever imagined.

He had been shoved into a corpse. He then had to claw his way frantically out of a grave to reach air. Then he had to fight undead monstrosities in a graveyard before he could reach relative safety, only to find there was no safety at all in that world.

Then he met The Bun, a being that resembled a giant.... steamed meat bun... thing that somehow still managed to wear armor and wield weaponry.

The Bun was a fiend. A backstabbing, prank pulling fiend. He was also the only one who had bothered to try to teach him how to survive in that demented hell realm, so the Dream Demon had put up with him rather reluctantly.

The first time the Dream Demon had died and lost a soul, he had frantically killed every single monster in his path right after the moment he had been revived, trying to get his soul back. He had only felt relaxed enough to stop murdering everything from the right to the left when he had felt that soul of his rejoin him again.

Then he was flooded in souls of all the things he had killed, drowning in their memories and their resentments until he managed to break free and center himself. That was an incredibly disorienting experience.

Losing souls, losing humanity, feeling the pieces of him being scraped out, or flying away from him each time, leaving him terribly empty had terrified him.WWinning the battles and being buried in memories of the undead and monsters that he sent back to their graves was just as overwhelmingly discomfiting.

His only consolation was that despite all of that he hadn't been reduced to a whisper on the wind, and all because of the strange resurrection system that hell realm had.

Apparently the reason he hadn't ceased to exist upon his first death and subsequent deaths was that the king of the gods and several other deities and mortal kings after him, had sacrificed themselves. They
had set themselves on fire and turned themselves into Cinders in order to grant all beings a chance to keep resurrecting.

Or at least that was all that the Dream Demon could confirm.

There were myriad rumors, he said, she said, about the gods motivations or what the possible consequences of the flame going out could mean for all those who lived in that realm but all of them agreed that the king of the gods had done it to prolong the Age of Flame. That is to say, the current civilization.

The Dream Demon didn't really care why the gods had done it or what for. He didn't care about their reasoning or the beliefs of the people around him. He didn't care about how the flame's continuing to burn or being snuffed out could affect them or their whole civilization.

What the Dream Demon did care about was simple. The Flame kept his souls from dissipating.

The Flame kept him alive.

The Flame kept resurrecting him and giving him more chances to live, to get out of this hellhole.

Therefore, in the Dream Demon's estimation, the Flame was good and it had to be kept burning.
At least until the Dream Demon could finally escape from that place.

And that is exactly what he did. He helped one of the people that he came across become the next lord of Cinder. Then he defended the man's throne while he continued trying to find his way out.

Finding his way out was easier said than done. The Dream Demon had no idea how many battles he had been forced to fight against former lords of Cinder, with and against so many other people who had all their own ulterior motives.

Some of them wanted to use him as a tool to kill their enemies. Others wanted to use him as a borrowed knife in their assisted suicides. Some wanted to rekindle the flame to take power for themselves in the current order. Others wanted to snuff out the flame to make a new order, a world ruled by men instead of the few remaining gods.

Luckily, the Dream Demon himself wasn't even the kind of being that could be set alight to further the Flame or snuff it out, so he managed to avoid most of their schemes by dint of not being what those schemers needed.

Of course, to his great confusion and initial dismay, even after he had managed to find a way out of that realm by taking advantage of the Fire's ability to link events all across the continuum from the distant past to the uncertain future in order to find the exit, he found himself in yet another world.

At least, he thought, at least he still had a working body. A real body. It was an incredible stroke of good fortune that he had managed to keep the body that he had been initially shoved into, upon his arrival in that hell realm.

At least, the Dream Demon was relieved, in this realm his souls and humanity would remain intact, in this body, right where they were supposed to be.

Of course, the Dream Demon hadn't reckoned on the fact that this new realm he had found his way to, had a whole society that had developed around the drinking the blood of beings that were ancient and eldritch as their main method of cultivation. A cultivation method that could result in people becoming horrifying mindless Beasts as well as Hunters.

The Dream Demon's first encounter with the cultivators of that realm had been with the Good Hunter, the First Hunter Gehrman, and the lady who would eventually become his wonderful wife, the Plain Doll.

Old Gerhman was clearly tired of living but nevertheless he cared for both the Dream Demon and Good Hunter as best as he could manage, training them diligently in how to keep themselves alive and sane. The Plain Doll was so sweet and gentle, caring and kind, it was like balm on all of the Dream Demon's wounds.

The Good Hunter was a decent junior martial brother, a bit naive, but he tried his best.

To the Dream Demon's delight, he had apparently acquired some companions who would not, in fact, kick him off cliffs for the 'lols'.

The Dream Demon then tried that blood drinking cultivation method out in order to strengthen his current body further. Since he was currently an undead, he had hoped to find a way to return his body to true life.

Of course, he succeeded but with... plentiful side effects.

For one, the Dream Demon had rapidly grown even more eyes than anyone should ever have. In his brain, of all places. He gained Insight at a truly frightening speed, gaining knowledge that had always managed to drive lesser men mad.

Knowledge like the fact that the plain Doll whom he had come to love so much was in fact an eldritch being called a Great One. The Great Ones' eternal yearning to have children after their own offspring had been taken from them had been the catalyst for their many attempts to either raise humans into being their children through evolving their flesh by continually feeding or transfusing their blood or train humans to bring their children into the world from the Great Ones' own flesh through various experiments that were undertaken by the humans who they made contracts with.

In the end, while the Good Hunter opted to be released from the dream, the Dream Demon in his stead consumed the three umbilical cords and challenged the Moon Presence to claim the Doll for his wife. He won and became a Great One himself.

That evolution combined with his flight through the Flame, a flame that bound causality and time together, opened his understanding of the greater cosmos.

Now he could see worlds where decisions and events went differently or worlds where all decisions were the same yet something fundamental about the universe was sometimes different, often gender for some strange reason.

These sights and knowledge granted him a deep understanding about some of the forces that drove the universe... like Fate.

This would likely come in handy later, but the most pertinent piece of information he had quickly gained was this:

The people who were currently running the universe were sick bastards who fed off the faith, the pain, the emotions of all the people who dwelt within the worlds under their control, gods, demons and humans alike. They also stole the creations and effort of others rather than enrich the universe themselves, arbitrarily granting blessings and curses according to their own amusement.

*humanity in the world that the dream demon was flung into doesn't refer to any virtuous behavior or conscience nor is it humanity in the sense of being a human being. humanity in that world means the ability to have higher cognition and the ability to feel any emotions at all.

The lamplight was low and gentle, the shadows kindly concealed the worst damage done to the body of a young man who lay helpless in Aoguang’s arms. The young man whimpered softly like an injured animal. He clung helplessly to Aoguang's strong body for a steady support.

Aoguang had found this young man in a brothel he had visited while he had been traveling. The brothel was in a country that wasn’t as big as the Empire. Although this backwater could not hope to compare itself to that giant, its remaining royals and nobles seemed to be quite happy to put on airs. Just like every other two-bit country’s royalty often did when they were all just small frogs in a well with too little knowledge of the outside world.

The young man had been sobbing all the while as he was being used as the entertainment. His legs were held open as man after man took him from behind. The clink of coin on coin heralded the fact that this was not the first abuse he had been forced to suffer this evening.

Aoguang had simply purchased the helpless young man to get that disgraceful sight over with and stop the abuse from continuing.

The disappointed crowd had reluctantly dissipated after having been prevented from venting themselves upon the helpless victim. That victim had simply been picked up and handed to Aoguang, while he was still twitching and dripping blood and white fluids from the continuous assault.

Aoguang had immediately taken the young man ‘home’ to his traveling carriage and then sent the drones out in droves to find out everything he could about the victim and the abusers alike.

The young man was a delicate beauty. His body was also visibly weak and the constant abuse he had suffered had done his health no favors.

It hadn't taken Aoguang long to get a diagnosis from the young man’s pulse and a careful examination from head to toe.

Dehydration, internal injuries, torn ligaments...

Aoguang gently stroked the shivering, whimpering young man, reaching for the healing potions and salves that would be needed.

The young man was clearly beyond speech right now. His throat was probably damaged from screaming, so Aoguang simply stroked his back gently as he poured warm healing energy into his abused body.

The young man's body relaxed, then tensed up again as Aoguang began to wash him clean. His fingers clutched at Aoguang even more fiercely than before. Tears dripping down his cheeks while Aoguang shushed him gently and told him he wasn’t going to be harmed. Aoguang kept a firm but gentle hold on him to prevent any flailing. Fortunately, other than a few false starts, the young man quickly calmed down. Once Aoguang could be certain that the young man wouldn’t accidentally injure himself by struggling in the metal tub, he continued soaping every part of the young man's body and washing the grime off.

The young man’s skin was soft and pale but it was marked with injuries from... perhaps a whip?
Hm, and not just a whip. The young man had other injuries that indicated other tools of torment. Fortunately, he didn’t seem to have lost any appendages.

Aoguang didn't care much about brothels or the people in them other than as a supply for his entertainment but he had been partly raised by Shizun and Shizun didn't like torture.

Kill if kill, fuck if fuck.

Aoguang could to some extent, understand why Shizun was so adamant about caring for one's lovers (or in his case, playthings) when he looked at the shivering, naked form in his arms.

Well, he could fix those injuries first. Right after he finished bathing his new acquisition.

The former owner had assumed the young man would be back. Either taken back or sent back by the new owner, it was all the same.
Too bad for him and whoever had given him the young man, there was no way that Aoguang was going to send this one back. He had picked this new pet up. The pet belonged to him now and Aoguang wasn’t the kind of person who let anyone take his things.

Aoguang was gently coating the young man's injuries with healing salves and holding the potion cup to his lips so that he could drink it. While this was happening, the drones he had sent out to acquire information were having a field day.

Because the man who had given the victim over to the brothel owner to have him tortured had come to find out where his torture toy had vanished off to. The toy in question was missing. And the brigands the owner had sent off to try to retrieve the boy were now very, very dead.

In a ditch.

The man who had originally thrown the victim out to be violated, tortured and sold in a brothel was the newly inaugurated young king of the country that the brothel was in.

It was this same king who ordered his eunuchs to 'prepare' the victim to be violated, causing the helpless young man to be forced to learn how to submit himself sexually to anyone that the king wanted to have him violated by. Then, the victim was given to be used and abused by the king's royal guards. Then the king had the victim paraded naked through the streets to humiliate him. After that the king threw the victim to the army to be abused by his loyal subordinates.

The king had intended the victim to be used and abused by customers of the brothel.

Right now, the king was enraged that his torture toy had been purchased by someone else and had been taken from the brothel. He had intended the torture to continue until his victim died from abuse.

It was only to be expected that the king was furious when he had found out his victim had been bought free by what the brothel owner assumed was a rich prince from another country. A rich prince who could take the victim out of his reach. Thus, the king took his frustration out on the victim's former owner, having the brothel owner and his senior staff all whipped mercilessly then sending his own men out to get information about the 'buyer'.

Unbeknownst to the king in question, he and his men were being investigated in turn. Even his country's palace and places of governance were being infiltrated by the miniscule drones.

There was no shortage of information flooding in. After all, the king had wanted his victim to be abused as thoroughly as possible and having him publicly violated and humiliated had been a part of that.

There was no shortage of discussions among the guards, the army or even the other customers of the brothel about how they had enjoyed the body of Aoguang's new pet. The same pet who was now shivering up against Aoguang and looking up at him in a mute entreaty, because his throat was still too injured to speak.

There was also no shortage of information about the crimes that Aoguang's new pet were apparently being punished for. Despite this Aoguang intended to confirm the sordid details of those with his pretty new pet once his throat was healed enough to speak.

It seemed that this small kingdom had recently been through one of those regime changes that were normal when the previous king had a multitude of concubines and consorts to go with his queen.

Suffice it to say, his newly acquired pet had once belonged to a noble family whose name had been expunged and whose 9 generations had been exterminated as a casualty while the princes battled with each other to gain control of the country and the throne. The family this new pet came from, had been the family of the legitimate empress and deceased former first consort (who supposedly died in childbirth with her stillborn baby girl), and they had been eradicated when the current king, the son of another consort, had come to the throne.

Apparently the young man that Aoguang had found being abused, had previously been the king’s man and betrayed his family for that king, only to be accused of various crimes and tormented because of it.

Aoguang didn't like what he had heard, neither about his new pet's betrayal of his own family nor his new pet's suffering. However, Aoguang was willing to suspend his judgement about his pet's misdeeds for now. Currently, he couldn't even speak to defend himself.

Aoguang simply gathered his now clean little beauty and began to examine his body intently, gently stroking every part of the helpless, delicate young man. Aoguang also continued massaging more medicine into his skin.

When Aoguang's questing hands began to stroke the helpless young man's abused chrysanthemum and pretty, reddened cock, his new pet flinched and mewled piteously.

Aoguang murmured to his new pet that he wasn't going to hurt him. Shivering, the young man was pleading with his gaze, but Aoguang soothed him with gentle touches, before working his medicine-slick fingers into his new pet's abused, contracting tight heat. Aoguang had washed that place out carefully earlier, and then, as now, the young man had clutched at him, eyes damp and all but silently begging for mercy.

Fortunately for the helpless young man, Aoguang didn't have any intention of hurting him, instead soothing him with a healing spell that made the young man relax even as his opened bud was gently tended to.

As Aoguang had every intention of taking his new pet out of the country, the young king had sent men out several times to retrieve what he saw as his toy.

The first time had been a few hidden royal guards. These were men who had previously assassinated people the young king had seen as political obstacles or threats.They were by mortal standards, masters of poisons and stealth with some skill in qinggong.They weren't his best men but the king had thought they would be sufficient.They were not sufficient. They died quickly, and their deaths had stunned the young man who Aoguang had finished healing.

In truth, Aoguang had taken his time and not exerted himself in the healing process because he had only taken the young man in as a whim.

As it was, it had also given him a chance to see if he could get his new acquisition's trust. That had been disrupted by the fools who had made a spectacle of themselves in an attempt to assassinate him.

Wei no longer had a family name.That was, after all, part of the punishment that the new king had inflicted on him.

The young king had purged almost all of Wei's family. The king had told Wei that if he fled or tried to kill himself to escape his punishment, the king would inflict that same suffering he had experienced on his niece and nephew. That was why Wei had never fought back or tried to flee from his abusers.

That was also the reason why Wei’s first words were to beg the strange nobleman who had bought him, to return him to the brothel.

It was a fact that the brothel owner had pulled this bait and switch before. He had sold Wei off to prosperous men and then accepted Wei back after the king had sent a man or two to talk to Wei's new owner. Invariably, the owners had sent Wei back to the brothel after having their way with him, because they were subjects of the king, or because they didn't have the strength or influence to oppose his 'request'. They also hadn't considered Wei to be worth the risk.

Of course, Wei knew that was only normal, because he was only a whore... and a sinner to boot.He was, after all, the reason that his entire family was dead, with his last surviving nephew and niece as the only exceptions.

Wei had loyally served the new king when that king was still a prince, because he had loved him.

Wei had taken his family for granted, used their wealth, influence and power to suppress others without even considering how much they had sacrificed for his sake. In the end, his family had lost their friends and allies because of his unthinking actions, their strongest supports had been taken from them one by one- and all of that was because of Wei's mistakes.

Wei's endless, fruitless attempts to court the king had availed him nothing, and at the end where all the king's other supporters had been rewarded, Wei had been reduced to a plaything to be violated.

He had poured all his efforts out for the king's love and all he got in return was contempt and degradation.

Wei regretted everything.

He regretted that he had wasted so much love, loyalty and effort on the king, when his family had deserved it far more. They had treasured and sheltered him in spite of his many mistakes, his myriad sins and his lack of appreciation for their steadfast protection and devotion.

Wei had suffered countless times at the hands of the king's eunuchs, the hidden guards, the officers and soldiers of the military and most recently, those of the brothel's customers.

Wei had put his full efforts into learning the arts in order to avoid the abuse as much as possible. He had studied weiqi, musical instruments, painting, poetry and calligraphy as if his life depended on it... because his survival in the brothel did depend on it.

And yet no matter how hard he tried or how skilled he became, he was still constantly violated.

The only real difference was that the brothel owner was now making a fortune from his suffering.

Every time his body was broken, there were people who healed him so that he could be violated and abused again.

In truth, being bought had been something he was now used to. Being healed on the other hand- at first Wei had believed his new owner was only tending to his injuries so that he could violate Wei as soon as possible. Those touches were so seductively gentle that they only made Wei feel more bitter, more worried that it would hurt so much worse when his new owner decided to act upon the privileges of ownership. Thus, Wei had acted as pitifully as possible, clinging to his new owner like a helpless pet, fawning upon him in hope that...his suffering might be reduced.

Apparently the fawning upon his new owner was working, because the nobleman who had bought Wei wasn't hurting him. If anything, Wei felt much better than when he had been tended to by other people in the past.

His injuries had stopped aching. The salves being used on him clearly had anesthetic properties. Clearly high class medicine. Most likely it was very expensive. That probably meant his new owner would expect him to serve him well, and might lash out at Wei if he was dissatisfied, right?

This originally had made Wei very anxious and thus, Wei clung to his new master and did his best to act affectionate, sell meng and look pitiful.

This seemed to have an effect. His new master, Li Aoguang, didn't hurt him and instead contented himself with caressing Wei's skin and stroking medicine-coated slick fingers over Wei's jade staff and inside Wei's chrysanthemum. At least it didn't hurt.

His new master's hands were very gentle, to the point that Wei's body...reacted and he ended up spilling himself.

By the time Wei's voice had begun to return, he had begun to hope that he could stay with this new master instead of being taken back to the brothel.

The arrival of the hidden guards sent by the king had once again thrust Wei into despair because surely this meant his nightmare would start again. That Wei would be bought back or would be taken back by force. That he would be returned to the brothel owner and suffer the unending abuse of the customers.

Except it didn't happen that way.

Wei's new owner refused to sell him back.

That was when the hidden guards attacked.... Only to be mercilessly slain so quickly and effortlessly that Wei's new owner wasn't even scratched. His new owner's 'qing' blue and green robes weren't even splattered with a single drop of blood. The hidden guards on the other hand, were reduced to wrecked piles of gore, so fast that Wei couldn't even follow his owner's movements, and could only stare in shock at the slain foes and the massive pools of blood.

The young man’s request had come out of nowhere. Aoguang was severely disconcerted to the point that his mind had been utterly derailed. In fact, Aoguang’s mind continually played it back while also frantically attempting to cross reference it to what he remembered from every other brothel, slave market, noble’s estate and rear court that he had ever encountered.

In general, prostitutes who get bought out of brothels tend to be overjoyed. It is, in fact, what most prostitutes yearn for and work their hardest to achieve.

In general, people who cried as they were pushed down and taken by force really don't ever want to go near the places where such horrible things happened to them.

So logically, Aoguang's new pet should have been blissfully clinging to him or praising him enthusiastically now that he had proof that he had been taken away from the brothel permanently.

He should at least be attempting to curry favor.

Except, nothing was going according to traditional logic right now.

Rather than being overjoyed that he had been defended, even from a general with an army....Aoguang's new pet had instead begged to be returned to the brothel.

Given that in the brothel, the young man had been victimized and repeatedly raped while the rapists threw coins into a collection box, or paid directly to the brothel owner for the privilege of fucking him... his behavior made no sense.

The young man's requests for Aoguang to return him to his place of torment was going against all reasonable and sane human behavior.

Aoguang was particularly confused because this new pet of his hadn't spoken a single coherent word for the first two weeks of their travel despite being continually being fed healing potions that surely should have fixed the injuries done to his throat before now.

The young man had not even introduced himself or thanked Aoguang for saving him from continued violation. Instead the young man's first understandable words were frantic pleas for his new master to return him to the brothel.

Naturally Aoguang was unwilling and confused. This made no sense whatsoever. No matter how many times Aoguang’s mind attempted to make some sense out those requests, it still didn’t add up. Thus, Aoguang told him he would not be sending him back, because this sounded very much like the Darwin Awards thatt his Shifu had told him about.

Aoguang had originally thought his new pet was mute, as other than the whimpering, mewling and sobbing, he had not made a sound.

Even his fawning had been silent, when attempting to curry favor by flattering one's new owner was something any concubine, courtesan, prostitute or slave would have known how to do in order to try to improve their living conditions.

It was a fact of life that seeking favor from those in power with sweet words was a survival skill in the brothels, so why were things proceeding in this fashion? Why were his first coherent words a request to be sent back to a hellhole?

Originally Aoguang had thought the inability to speak could either have been from throat damage or from severe mental trauma. Because as far as Aoguang knew, forcing people who suffered from both those kinds of muting could cause serious physical, emotional and mental damage, worsening the victim's condition. As a result, it was generally a bad idea to push them to do anything.

That was why Aoguang had reluctantly resigned himself to wait until the young man recovered before asking him about his past and clearing up rumors. Except it looked like the young man had lost his mind.

Right. Aoguang reviewed the events. The young man had been silent during the first group that Aoguang had exterminated. Aoguang had chalked that up to shock.

The new pet had fawned on Aoguang but he had spoken not a single word of gratitude towards Aoguang for saving him from the brothel or the attackers. He didn't even try, so Aoguang thought his throat or mind was still too badly damaged and let it pass.

The young man had also been silent during the second group's attack though he had been clearly overjoyed by the way he kissed Aoguang’s fingers and then curled up next to Aoguang in an endearing fashion, like a little kitten.

However, his first coherent words hadn't been thanks to Aoguang for the medicine or energy used in healing him. He also hadn't thanked Aoguang for bathing him, feeding him, bandaging him or sharing his own bed when the night turned cold, which was slightly frustrating.

Just as strangely, the man hadn’t even introduced himself. Anyone who had been called a number of unsavory epithets like ‘slut’ and ‘bitch in heat’ should want to correct their new companion’s impression of them by offering their name, right? Anyone who had heard other people saying all sorts of vile things about them should be trying to defend his or her own reputation by trying to give an explanation, right?!

It was certainly not what any prostitute, courtesan or newly bought concubine in Aoguang's experience would have done in order to pave the way for good relations in the future.

The young man had only been willing to speak after Aoguang had crushed the third attack, which was the one led by an actual military official. Such reticence implied a refusal to acknowledge Aoguang's kindnesses that was …mildly annoying. It also didn't give Aoguang a good impression of this new acquisition of his, however that was outweighed by the sheer oddity of what the young man had chosen to use his first words for. Those words were still stalling Aoguang’s mental processes.

In fact, the first moment Aoguang had heard the young man plead to be sent back, Aoguang could only think, ‘What.’

What felt like an eternity later, his mind had progressed to the second part of the sentence, ‘…the fuck?!’

Right now, his mind was still spitting out an assemblage of vicious cursing which basically boiled down to, ‘are you fucking with me?!’

There were tales that if someone devoured the body parts of the reincarnation of a holy being or having intercourse with such a being could attain immortal life.

Some of those rumors were mutations. There were rumors that claimed such macabre meals or perhaps using the yang and yin of such rare individuals to nourish oneself by dual cultivation or yin and yang stealing techniques could return or extend the youth of mortals... among other things.

Such mutated rumors had always existed since the text 'Journey to the West' and 'Investiture of the Gods' had been written ages ago, long before this dynasty had put down roots.

Those rumors resurfaced, began to spread and took root not long after the Pavilion incident had revealed that such an immortal could have returned to walk in their midst.

There had indeed been a vital, defining moment that had given credence to those monstrous old folk tales in the Pavilion's playback and it was even incontrovertible fact.

Shen Qingqiu's past incarnation had a beloved son. This son had clearly been an immortal. As those who had been lucky enough to be in the pavilion or gain a copy of the recording by fair means or foul could attest to, that fair immortal beauty had been betrayed by mortals and his body had been defiled for raw materials.

His death had been horribly avenged by fire coming down from the heavens, and both the forces of the heavens and the hells working in a joint assault to purge mankind for this effrontery, but that didn't change facts.

To some unscrupulous people, this was evidence that such a scheme would work.

It was a fact that such fates of being harvested for raw materials had happened to weak spirits, to demons that could be trapped and those had rumored efficacy as methods of gaining immortality too. However, a true, reincarnated immortal might be far more potent.

There were myriad attempts in the cultivation world to raise human panaceas for similar reasons.

There were sects and clans who raised poison humans or even human gu. Some methods for those involved forcing people to host gu in their bodies or dosing people with poisons from childhood or even infancy.

Some methods to create human panaceas involved dosing people with medicines and soaking them with medicines for decades. Some involved feeding the bodies and lives of innocent people to monstrous trees that could produce miraculous fruit. Others involved forcing people to raise creatures as parasites within their very bodies so that those creatures could be harvested as life saving and life extending straws later on.

All these experiments were performed for various merits.

Some experiments were to raise living weapons.

Some experiments were to raise fatted calves, people whose blood and bodies could be used to extend life, heal or poison.

Some unscrupulous fiends used their outer sect disciples, refining them to be fertilizer that would feed life extending medicinal plants. Other scheming elders forced their disciples to burn their lives away to fuel attempts to make immortality pills. Many cultivators, either roaming free or from sects took people as cultivation furnaces, devouring their lives in various ways.

It was all the cause of countless tragedies, and it could be said that many influential families and sects willingly soiled their hands with blood in this manner in order to gain advantages in this dog eat dog world.

It should have been no surprise to anyone that some of those proposals were actually intended as traps.

It was also to be suspected that the number of people who would have ill intentions, desiring to kidnap and devour the Qing Jing peak lord did not merely include the powerhungry demons, but also humans hungry for immortality and fellow immortal cultivators, even those from righteous sects.

Yue Qingyuan naturally had no intention of letting Qingqiu out of his eyes.

Liu Qingge had originally been ambivalent to the sect master's desire to have Senior brother Qingqiu under watch as much as possible... At least until Yue Qingyuan pointed these facts out to him.

The Bai Zhan peak lord was upright, loyal, and.... rather uncomprehending of several of the sordid realities of the world.

Of course, once informed, the Bai Zhan peak lord became alarmed and... exceedingly overbearing.

It hadn't taken Lian Yunying, Ao Jiang and Wu Guen long to figure out that the first male wife, Ziming, knew exactly how best to coax Wang An to do things his way.

One of the ways he did it was by calling Wang An, 'husband'.

Some men enjoyed being called, 'Master'. Li Aoguang, who was Wang An's fellow disciple, certainly seemed to enjoy being addressed in that way . Some other men of rank tended to enjoy being called, 'my lord'. These men would often refer to themselves as, 'your lordship', 'this lord', 'this prince,' or 'this king'.

While Li Aoguang enjoyed being called, 'Master', Wang An really liked being called, 'husband'. In fact, he liked it so much that when Ao Jiang had experimentally called him that while they were having sex, Wang An had visibly shuddered. The movements that to an observer would have looked like minute shivers had sent helpless waves of pleasure deep inside Ao Jiang's body. Then Wang An had proceeded to thrust into him far harder and faster, having completely lost control over his lust.

Skin gliding against skin, Wang An's eyes had been fever bright, completely intoxicated as their bodies moved against each other rapidly, bumping and grinding.

After that Wang An had embraced Ao Jiang with unusual fervor, all the while trying to make Ao Jiang keep calling him that.

They had tossed and turned all night , like fish in the satin waves of the bedsheets.

The next morning when he had recovered Ao Jiang had given Wu Guen and Lian Yunying that information as a tip.

The word 'qie' was both a way for a woman to refer to herself while speaking to her husband and also a term for a concubine. While Wang An had never stated an interest in such self referencing words, nor ever used illeisms to refer to himself, he did clearly like being called 'husband' and so it had occurred to his new spouses that it might be a way for them to coax concessions out of him.

Ao Jiang hadn't been willing to lower himself to calling himself 'qie' as some wives –particularly those in the higher ranking families- did. While Wu Guen felt that even thinking the word put an uncomfortable lump in his throat.

The first person who referred to himself as 'qie' was Lian Yunying and he did it out of a desire to coax Wang An to... not have sex with him.

Lian Yunying was so ill at ease about this whole relationship that he all but begged to not have to go to bed with Wang An. Since Ziming had called Wang An 'husband', Yunying had very reluctantly gone one step further in the hopes that by lowering himself to this level it would make Wang An more willing to grant his request.

Wang An had looked visibly unhappy when Yunying had used that word to refer to himself.

"You are not a concubine and I don't like any of you using that word at all. In addition, I know that some men want to hear the people in their rear courts refer to themselves as 'this slave'. I don't ever want to hear you say either of those words ever again."

Wang An had then kissed him very gently. The surprised Yunying blinked in shock as something in his chest fluttered, just a bit.

He felt an awkward relief, and oddly, it felt as if he was treasured. The tightness in his shoulders eased.

"You are my wife. All my wives should be able to speak to me without any of these illeisms to separate us."

Wang An, Yunying decided, was very strange.

But at least he didn't ask them to sacrifice their dignity in that way or insist on claiming his marital rights while Yunying was so unhappy and afraid.

While Wang An did enjoy pushing Lian Yunying until he cried, that was just in bed. It had taken him a while to realize that Yunying really was frightened and miserable.

When he had married Ao Jiang, Wu Guen and Lian Yunying and brought them in, he had taken it upon himself to personally show them around Qing Jing Peak. Wang An had also taken them down to the fortified trade towns that his Shifu had made from the formerly small villages. He had also shown them the completely terrifying Beast infested woods and the terrible traps within . He had given them teleport tokens that doubled as defensive artifacts in order to let them pass through the territory unmolested if they had to .

With those items now in their possession , Wang An could relax. There would be no Beast attack or trap accidentally killing them. Of course those tokens wouldn't let them run away from him or be used as weapons, their parameters had been very clearly delineated.

Wu Guen and Ao Jiang had been visibly afraid when they had been shown those things, given an idea of the true extent of the defenses of the peak and the sect.

They now knew they were lucky to still be alive. The places that they had formerly tried to infiltrate had now gained some far more lethal deathtraps and the whole area was more of a killing ground than before.
While Ao Jiang and Wu Guen had been traumatized by those death traps that they had run into before, Lian Yunying was only seeing them for the first time now. Naturally, he was also terrified.

Although Wang An had noted their fear he had thought that by taking the time to impress on them that from now on those traps and Beasts would be a protection for them, instead of against them, they would eventually lose that fear and settle down.

While Ao Jiang and Wu Guen had seemingly recovered their courage after hearing that, Yunying had not.

Wang An had prepared rooms and gardens for them that would be as luxurious as those of emperors, by mortal standards.

Wang An didn't want Yunying, Wu Guen or Ao Jiang to think he didn't care for them as people. Wang An didn't want them to believe that he thought of them like slaves who could be used as sex toys and then discarded. He also didn't want them to be afraid of him or of his brother disciples who would be their in-laws now.

He had even gotten all three I thought he had four wives? of his beauties cultivation draughts, potions and pills- but only the equivalent to those that the outer sect disciples were already getting.

Their cultivation was rising quickly in response, so Wang An had thought they would be happy with him and therefore would not be afraid.

Except it seemed that Yunying was miserable and frightened. Of both him and of the peak.

Yunying's shivering and pitiful figure , with the reddened rims of his beautiful eyes damp with unshed tears... Wang An wanted to see that in bed after having fucked him into a wreck, but he didn't want to see those eyes looking like that out of fear at him.

He wanted Yunying, Ao Jiang and Wu Guen to 'serve' him day and night. He never wanted any of them to be terrified or miserable.

Wang An wanted to dote on them and have them welcome him in return in every way possible, particularly inside of them.

If Yunying was just going to cry or stay silent and let Wang An do whatever he wanted to his body out of genuine terror, that meant Wang An had failed as a husband .

That was why Wang An had decided to be even more gentle with Yunying and to coax him until he would become willing and eager.

In addition, the whole 'this slave, this concubine' thing that woman sometimes did gave Wang An the creeps. He wanted a happy life with his spouses, not near constant obsequiousness, subservience and groveling.

Ziming had, by contrast, learned quite early exactly how to please Wang An. Ziming addressed him as his husband, wore anything Wang An wanted him to wear. He had even bought women's gowns in his own size so that he could please Wang An while wearing them. But those clothes ; the diaphanous sheer silk and gauze robes and loincloths as well as the bridal gowns and marriage robes were to only be worn in private.

In public, Ziming continued to act in all ways like the Marquis he had always been all the while still pouring wine for Wang An and doting on him in all ways as a spouse.
He was willing to let Wang An slide his hands inside the folds of his clothing whenever he wanted.

Wang An had taken him in his carriage once, he had then ruined his robes in a way that had certainly given them both fond memories.

Yes, Ziming knew him, knew how to please him. And he did all those things of his own volition. Wang An never had to pressure him into anything.

Ao Jiang and Wu Guen couldn't quite bring themselves to cuddle Wang An in public. They didn't want to 'play' in areas other than the bedroom. It stuck in their craw to try to coax him. ß makes no sense. They weren't willing to obviously dote on Wang An and let him have his way in all things in public, the way that Ziming was doing.

It embarrassed them and made them feel awkward. They would look so shy and ill at ease. Wang An thought it was all very cute.

In the end Ao Jiang and Wu Guen had worked out that asking Ziming to ask Wang An for things that they wanted was much easier on their pride as men then asking Wang An themselves .
Deferring to Ziming instinctively was easier than trying to walk the fine line of being seductive, coaxing all the while simultaneously maintaining their pride as men. The only place they felt safe to try to act in such a manner was in the privacy of Wang An's bedroom, in their bed.

That meant that due to how all the others deferred to him , Ziming became the gate keeper and go between. It also meant that he held the position of first and favored wife by process of elimination.

Since Ao Jiang and Wu Guen would feel uncomfortable just thinking about 'lowering themselves' to act seductively towards him or softly coaxing him, Wang An had therefore allowed them to keep going in this shy, awkward manner, while only acting soft towards him in private and maintaining their pride in public.

Clearly Yunying clearly needed to be handled in a different manner , Wang An would have to take care to be gentler with him.

Ziming was so clearly comfortable in his role as Wang An's wife that everyone found being around him extremely comforting.

This was because Ziming was in love with Wang An. He had fallen in love with Wang An at first sight and he therefore deeply desired him. Every overture that Wang An made brought him great joy . The enjoyment Wang An took in doting on him by showering him in gifts, holding hands everywhere, kissing him in public and all sorts of other public displays of affection which the other three wives didn't want were all completely to Ziming's taste.

In fact, all these displays of obvious public affection and doting meant that Ziming was completely comfortable with any kind of cosplaying that Wang An wanted because they were all signs of Wang An's desire for him. It also meant he was completely self-possessed? , and completely self assured. He hadn't the slightest bit of insecurity left to worry with.

Ziming was blissfully happy and had made sure his entire family knew it. Especially his perpetually worried brocon brother, Zisheng.

Wu Guen and Ao Jiang were not the scholarly type of immortal cultivators.

Some cultivators could drive people mad, control people, create illusions and injure people's internal organs or even kill them just by playing songs on zithers, singing, dancing or speaking poems. That was actually what people expected out of scholarly cultivators. While it was true that Shifu had insisted they learn how to do such things in their musical classes, those weren't Wang An's type of thing.

Each of Shifu's disciples had some of their own skills that they were better at in comparison to others .

For instance, Zhu Liang and Guo Minghua were the ones who could best use their music to crush his enemies.

Minghua preferred illusions and barbed words, while Liang preferred poetry and formations to focus his energies.

Of course, the other cultivators were more straightforward.

Many male cultivators were either sword cultivators or body cultivators, because apparently these types of skills were very cool. Shang Bo counted as both a blade cultivator and a body cultivator, though he preferred to use axes rather than swords.

Ao Jiang and Wu Guen were quite straightforward in terms of their cultivation. Ao Jiang was a sword cultivator and Wu Guen was a body cultivator.

Neither of them had much interest in poetry meetings even though both of them liked beautiful scenery.

When it was their turn to choose the location for their outings, they tended to prefer visiting auction houses for rare materials, weapons and armor. They also enjoyed going out to explore ruins or kill Beasts in order to get cultivation boosting materials, artifacts or manuals. Even mere scraps of ancient training manuals were fairly valuable in their eyes.

It hadn't taken Wang An long to figure out that giving his wives artifacts with defensive qualities delighted them.

Things such as special robes which could function as armor, hairpins that could expand to be used as weapons, amulets and belt ornaments that functioned as protective charms and storage rings to wear on their fingers were all eagerly accepted. Instead of flowers, he courted them with written cultivation methods, spirit strengthening tecniques and martial arts manuals from the massive library of such things that his master had compiled.

In truth, they had no idea how their master had gotten so many tons worth of different qi, spirit and martial arts techniques to the point that they were tied in twine like bundles of scrap papers.

Wang An spent many an enjoyable afternoon taking Wu Guen and Ao Jiang out to find techniques that were best suited to them.

These efforts of his were rewarded with spontaneous kisses and hugs. Sometimes, these things even pleased Wu Guen and Ao Jiang so much that they pounced upon him to show their gratitude in a... very physical manner.
They loved hunting for Beasts, and camping. The scenery of some ancient forest or breathtaking canyon or rippling body of water would always lighten their spirits. Wang An's cooking was very clearly appreciated by his two lovers when they were on such trips, because they themselves couldn't cook.

Going to auctions to slap faces by selling off cultivation boosting plants while purchasing interesting qi artifacts, trainable pets and anything that caught their eyes really made Ao Jiang and Wu Guen light up with glee. Probably because such outings gave them the opportunity to look down on former rivals and sectmates alike.

Ziming really liked being able to look at good scenery and enjoyed attending events such as poetry parties, flower viewings, moon viewings, concerts and plays.

He enjoyed good food and good music. He never failed to light up with joy and compliment Wang An every time that Wang An cooked food for him. He was perfectly happy with receiving plenty of kisses and handholding, even if it was in public.

Ziming was the easiest to court in a romantic manner , which was something that Wang An thought was quite adorable.
It was also something that heightened Ziming's appeal in Wang An's eyes because Wang An himself liked romantic gestures.
Ah, but then there was Yunying. Yunying whose known favorite activities was to hiring entertainers and courtesans alike to entertain him with their arts and their bodies.

According to Wang An's research, previously, Yunying had been happy to spent his spare time visiting taverns so that he could leisurely sample all the available liquor and food.

He also enjoyed visiting brothels to 'enjoy' their courtesans. He had poured money out like water in order to 'taste' all the most beautiful, talented women in the red light district.

He had also eagerly poured out more money and had taken his guards to pressure beautiful maidens into his bed so that he might have the pleasure of devouring them. He had compensated those victims with money, uncaring of their later circumstances in life.

In short, to anyone who read novels, Yunying was a picture perfect hedonistic, lecherous cannon fodder.
Now, he was Wang An's man, so he could no longer continue to indulge his lusts in the bodies of whatever beautiful women caught his eye as he had done previously .

Yunying still had some beautiful tongfang and he didn't even have the courage to tell Wang An that he had them.

In the past, Lian Yunying had enjoyed indulging all his senses. The finest music, the most elegant clothing and ornaments, the most delicious food and the most beautiful women he could afford were how he chose to spend all his time and money.

Right now, traveling to the brothels were a topic Yunying was frankly too frightened to bring up.

He could admit that Wang An took very good care of all of his male wives. He never skimped out on anything when it involved them.

Lian Yunying also had to admit that the food which Wang An cooked was absolutely wonderfully made. If he hadn't been so ill at ease to the point of losing his appetite, it might have cast his previous most expensive food trips into the dust by comparison.

The liquor that he was given in his new home was also probably the finest he would ever be able to taste.

It was simply the fact that his position as a wife made Yunying very nervous and being ill at ease robbed him of any pleasure that could be gained from the food and liquor.

The knotted ball of anxiety at the centre of his stomach made the flavors flat and made him feel as if he was eating ash. In addition, going with Wang An to some of his previous haunts confirmed that even if he ate the food he had previously enjoyed on his past visits, with Wang An there by his side, he still felt too anxious to enjoy anything.

In the end, the only outing that Lian Yunying wanted to go on was a return to his paternal home, where his grandfather was.

Elder Lian had always been the strong support in all of Lian Yunying's childhood.

Lian Yunying didn't remember his parents. They had died early in his childhood. The best he could remember of his mother was the scent of her perfume and the sound of his parents' voices that occasionally echo in the wisps on his dreams.

His grandfather, Elder Lian, had raised Yunying for as long as he could easily remember. It was his grandfather who had taught little Yunying to hunt, and trained him in their family cultivation and martial techniques. It was his grandfather who had wrangled Yunying's entry into the sect and it was also his grandfather who made sure that Yunying hadn’t been bullied.

It was because of his doting grandfather that Lian Yunying had happily run rampant, because he had never been introduced to the concept of consequences.

Consequences happened to other people, not to Yunying.

Elder Lian had covered up for all of Yunying's previous mistakes and had handed out dowry money to every single woman that Yunying had deflowered or paid off the ladies of the night who Yunying toyed with.

Yunying had completely accepted that it was Elder Lian who would eventually pick out his bride for the Lian family's profit, but along the way, he could have as much fun as he wanted so he had been alright with it.
Elder Lian favored Yunying as his favorite grandson because he was only child of Elder Lian's heir.

Elder Lian had one wife and three concubines. He had children by all four of them, but his heir had been his favorite son. His heir was the son of his first wife who had been the love of his life. Even if he had children and grandchildren through from his concubines , they just didn't compare.

Elder Lian's beloved wife had died far too early from an illness that they didn't have the rare medicines to cure. Her son and his wife had brought Elder Lian great joy and pride but they had also died early, as casualties in a large scale Beast hunt that had gone very wrong .

It was inevitable that going into dangerous zones like that to hunt demonic, spiritual or magical beasts would result in a fair share of casualties.

Elder Lian's beloved son and daughter in law both were slain by the creatures they had been hunting. It hadn't been a quarrel between immortal cultivators or backstabbing or schemes.. It had just been very bad luck that had set Yunying's parents up against a monster that the two of them didn't have the strength to slay.

These deaths had caused Elder Lian such grief that his only comfort was his young grandson whom thereafter he spoiled rotten

Wu Guen and Ao Jiang had been able to easily enjoy their hunts of dangerous creatures, and their exploration of ruins, but such things weren't Yunying's cup of tea, because of all the stories he had been told of how his parents had been killed.

Since hunting in a dangerous area like that had killed his parents, Yunying had spent his childhood being shepherded around by his grandfather, he was kept away from such dangerous places.

Because his grandfather had kept him so safe all these years, Yunying naturally felt far more at ease when he returned to the paternal home.

Wang An had insisted on going with him. That was the only fly in the ointment, but being able to meet his grandfather and coming home again was well worth it.

Lian Yunying had relaxed the moment his home was in sight.

Where the Ao and Wu family homes were elegant but sturdy, clearly the homes of strong warriors and elegant scholars of really good families with excellent reputations, Lian Yunying's home was rather gaudy and grandiose by comparison.

Wang An had done his research when he had built the rooms and gardens for his wives. Ziming's rooms and gardens were styled in a way that was worthy of an Imperial prince of a much higher rank than Ziming's own father. These rooms were timelessly elegant and awe inspiring, with plenty of masterpiece art and furniture works on display. Wu Guen and Ao Jiang's rooms were both furnished with the strongest, but most simply elegant furniture and decorations, and they both had their cultivation caves and martial training dojo for sparring. Their martial training dojo was customized for their fighting styles. Their gardens were far simpler than Ziming's, every curve and turn planned out specifically for the purpose of promoting their understanding of the Dao.

And Yunying's rooms and gardens were the flashy rooms and gardens of a young master from a nouveau riche family, eager to show off.

Those rooms and gardens had all been based on the styles of their homes.

If anything the Lian family home, a courtyard house with large gardens, was simply Yunying's rooms writ large.

When Yunying got down from the carriage and saw his grandfather, he lit up like a lantern and ran to embrace him, any attempt to show off a noble and elegant bearing had been completely forgotten.

Yunying had been spending his days ever since the wedding feeling unhappy and anxious.

Logically speaking, he knew he shouldn't have been feeling this unhappy. His new rooms were wonderfully well made, they were done in a style that was as if his husband had taken into account what his home looked like before he had even built them. They had columns, pillars carved with floral designs, smoothly polished tiled floors, windows with exquisite designs, fretwork dividing walls, carved rafters, carved coffered ceilings. His rooms were brightly painted and decorated with blues, greens and highlighted with gold leafing. They were luxuriously furnished with sweet scented wooden furniture. There was plenty of brocade, silks and satins, some of which had been embroidered, others had been hand painted. Those rooms were in every inch exactly the kind of rooms he should have found pleasing. Here and there he could see details that called back to the home he grew up in, but it wasn't the same.

Yunying's food was excellent, cooked by his husband. The other wives had clearly happily settled in. Ziming was a blissful beacon of peace and calm, Ao Jiang and Wu Guen were by contrast, rather more intimidating. It seemed there really was a difference between how their sect had trained them and how Yunying himself had been trained.

The fact that they kept suggesting that he should come with them on dangerous outings to hunt Beasts like those that had killed his own parents was proof enough of that.

Yunying... honestly had no solid complaints. All his daily needs were seen to with great care. Wang An hadn't even hurt him. There had been nothing weird, no forceful actions, no pain inflicted on him. All Yunying had to go on, was a deep creeping feeling of unease.

Yunying had never been subordinate to anyone other than his grandfather and sect elders before, and this was a completely different, far more powerful and imposing sect that he was now living in, as the wife of one of its inner sect disciples.
The death traps, the killing fields, the many dangers ringing the sect as they acted as its defenses had turned his bones to water with fear. Yet, he had never been dragged out to experience any of it himself, nor had he been threatened with them. He had simply been informed that they existed and why they had been built. All that Yunying knew was, he couldn't leave without his husband so he was trapped here. He felt like he was in a gilded cage.

Yunying felt helpless and at a disadvantage. If he upset anyone or did anything wrong, he might be punished. Maybe, in his worst imaginings, all that would be left of him might be bones.

Yunying wasn't even sure what was 'wrong' or what his 'punishment' might be. It was simply this ominous, formless mass of possible mistakes and consequences which was causing him to wake up sweating in the night or to shiver occasionally when the thought crossed his mind

Ao Jiang and Wu Guen were showing an enviable ease at dealing with their new lives as wives. They seemed to be quite pleased with their quarters. Neither of them showed any unease at their food and they clearly enjoyed everything that was being given to them. They even had started venturing out into the sect grounds and making acquaintances amongst the outer sect disciples of the peak.

Ziming was so clearly completely happy with his lot the joy radiating from him had could be clearly felt to the point that just being around him could calm others down. Everything seemed to be to his taste. Ziming had gently told him that there was nothing to be worried about, but Yunying was worried, so obviously there was something to worry about, right?!

Ziming kept saying Wang An genuinely wanted to look after him, citing this and that example of Wang An's pampering. Ziming was of the opinion that Wang An was a perfect, doting husband, and wouldn't ever be cruel to them, but then Ziming had never upset Wang An nor had he ever faced the consequences of his wrath, so how could he know?
Yunying was making himself quite sick with worry but he had no solid evidence of anything to be worried of.

Worst of all, Yunying also felt perpetually homesick. He missed his Grandfather.

Yunying had never been further than the breadth of a city away from his Grandfather. They were always in the same house, the same city or the same province.

Cang Qiong was so very far away from home and everything was so unfamiliar. Yunying yearned for his home and his grandfather near constantly.

He knew he hadn't any real reason to feel upset or anxious or worried. Still, that didn't stop Yunying from holding a secret inner hope that having his grandfather nearby could make it all better. His grandfather had fixed everything before, and helped him out of all the other previous dangerous situations, so surely, somehow, if grandfather was here, then things would somehow be better, right?

Yunying didn't even have any concrete wants or desires to improve his situation . All his physical needs were met. He wasn't being hurt. He just... felt that having his grandfather here would make everything better. Somehow.

Naturally, when Wang An offered to take him home for a home visit, Yunying jumped at the chance.

Elder Lian had worked hard these many years. A long time ago, he had been picked up as a disciple of a small sect. In the decades to follow, Elder Lian worked his way up from disciple to hall master and finally to sect master.

But to Elder Lian, that wasn't the most important thing. The important thing is that when he was younger, Elder Lian had fallen in love with Miss Rui Xiang, a beautiful and delicate maiden from a scholarly family. She had even given him one precious son before she fell ill.

Their only son, Lian Junwei, had great filial piety. He was also intelligent, strong, reliable, a diligent scholar and cultivator. He was the dragon's pearl held closely in the palm of his fathers hand .

Of course, Elder Lian had some children from his concubines but it wasn't a stretch to say that none of them could possibly compare to Junwei.
Despite the fact that he had explicitly told them the sect rules, those brats tried to use the fact that he their father was sect master to bully their fellow students. Elder Lian had been so enraged that he had beaten them with his cane, much to the shock of the other sect members.

Junwei wasn't anything like those good for nothings. Junwei never tried to cheat. Junwei never caused his parents any trouble. He worked hard, didn't get himself entangled or addicted to vices. His cultivation was high, and his parents were proud of him. Even when picking out a wife, Elder Lian never had to caution Junwei about who to marry, because Junwei had excellent eyes. Junwei chose to marry Miss Hong Ying, the treasured daughter of a small medicine hall, because he fell in love with her. Upon investigating her background and finding it clean and pure , Elder Lian had been truly pleased to welcome her into the family. This marriage brought in a medicine hall to be partnered with their sect. Indeed, this connection also brought in more doctors and more medicines with which to treat Junwei's mother.

In addition, Junwei's wife was a wonderfully filial child who had carefully looked after her mother in law, feeding her medicine which she made with her own hands. She deserved every bit of the love and affection her husband lavished on her.

Elder Lian had searched far and wide, used every single connection he had, to try to get a cure for his beloved. In the end, the hard work of the godly doctors had only prolonged her life enough to see her son married to his true love and for there to be a child on the way. Then, her longstanding illness had carried her off.

Elder Lian had nearly crumbled, but his favored son's earnest care had been all that had kept him going. But terrible events happened in threes.

Not long after the happy event of the birth of his little grandson Yunying's, both Elder Lian's dear heir and his wife were slain by a rampant demonic beast which they couldn't slay during a beast hunt .

They weren't the only victims... A full thirty other cultivators from various small sects had also died in that terrible hunt. But to Elder Lian, only those two deaths mattered.

He quickly let go of his sect master position and retired to raise and look after his grandson instead.

As little Yunying grew up, he received the lion's share of his grandfather's love and attention, just as several years ago, his father had also received the lion's share of Elder Lian's doting affection.

Over the years, there had been a few instances where Elder Lian's other grandchildren had attempted to use his reputation for their own purposes, assuming that a starving camel was still much better off than the horse, just like their parents once had.

They were very, very wrong. Like their wayward parents, the only thing they got were massive beatings from the enraged Elder's cane.

Naturally, this did not endear Yunying to the rest of Elder Lian's descendants.
Lian Junwei, they could not speak ill of. Firstly, he had been a filial son all of his life, he had won glory and wealth for the sect, strengthened both the sect and the family. His good judgement had put him in line to possibly have succeeded his father as sect master- if heaven hadn't loved him so much that it took him away.

Lian Yunying on the other hand, was clearly just as bad as they had once been but he wasn't being censured or punished by his grandfather. That was just putting salt on open wounds.

For years, Lian Junwei's halfsiblings had resented him bitterly because they felt he was always looking down on them. Junwei couldn't be cursed out for it as his behavior was impeccable. Now his son was here and his behavior was very far from his father's spotless record but this second generation was still spoiled by their mutual grandfather, where the other grandchildren weren't given any partiality. Naturally there was great bitterness going around .

Bitterness that they had to suppress, because to the great disgruntlement of his concubine-born sons, Elder Lian looked to be one of those sly old bastards that just refused to die, no matter how much they tried to scheme against him.

Wang An's proposal was like a giant meat pie falling from the sky for Elder Lian. It meant that his little Yunying's position in the sect was unshakeable, that Yunying would continue to have a strong backer and protector even after he himself died. It meant that Yunying would have the finest luxuries, that he would be forever pampered and cared for.

However, Elder Lian still felt conflicted because his beloved grandchild had gotten married away from him , and he had given away his most precious treasure. He constantly worried that Yunying might not be cared for as well as he could have hoped. Thus he was both simultaneously secretly happy and deeply anxious for his grandson.

Yunying, of course, knew nothing of his grandfather's troubles as he eagerly ran into his open arms to cling to him like a baby koala and let the knot in his heart unravel.

Elder Lian was very pleased to see his precious grandson clad in the finest silk robes, with a beautiful jade hairpin and matching belt ornaments. Even from just a glance and a hug, Elder Lian could already tell that his little grandson was very much doted on, because he could sense the energy from all the many different qi artifacts on his grandson's body.
For instance, Elder Lian could tell that despite how pale his face was , little Yunying's cultivation had improved.

The question of course was why did his little Yunying have such reddened, teary eyes and why did he cling to him so tightly despite the evidence that he wasn't being bullied.

Yunying had even been accompanied by his husband, who had held his hand and helped him down from the sedan. Why then was his little Yunying so upset?

When Elder Lian asked his grandson these questions, the corners of his grandson's lips turned down and he pitifully floundered for words before finally settling on, "I missed you, grandfather."

"You are still such a child," Elder Lian felt both helpless and flattered, his eyes itched with tears he couldn't shed as he hugged his grandson and stroked his head like he was a little cat.

"I'm sorry this child has inconvenienced you. It seems that he still hasn't grown up properly until now." Elder Lian sighed, trying to make apologies to Wang An who was seemingly being ignored by his clingy little grandson.
Wang An's lips twitched up into a wry smile. "This wife of mine had completely lost his appetite for food, no matter what dishes I cook, he still barely picks at it. So this was why, he was feeling homesick!"

Elder Lian felt even more helplessly fond and flattered. This little grandson of his had missed him so much, he really wasn't mature at all, was he?
After they entered the house they walked through the gardens as Wang An quietly asked Elder Lian how to make Yunying more comfortable in his new home.

"I built and furnished his rooms. I grew him a garden. I gave him fine clothes and jewelry. I cook his food with my own hands. I have done the best I could to try to make his new residence to his tastes, but he is still not comfortable." Wang An explained. "And I don't know why."

Wang An's efforts to win his spouse over were obvious in the way he cooked their meal and poured their tea. Yes, Elder Lian nodded to himself as he savored the food, he truly had managed to find little Yunying a good spouse.

"The Cang Qiong mountain sect is very big and the forests around it are frightening and full of Beasts which the disciples hunt." Yunying ventured, his eyes were shadowed with worry. "I'm not used to such things. I don't understand the way things are supposed to go or what I am expected to do . I feel intimidated and lost."

Ah. That explained it. Elder Lian could only ask Wang An to continue to help Yunying familiarize himself with their sect but also keep Yunying away from the Beasts, and to never take him on a hunt... because his parents had died on one such expedition.

The discussions continued in a similar way for quite some time. In the end it was decided that Yunying would be returning to visit his grandfather once a month so that he could be acclimatized to his new home with the least possible discomfort. Part of what they needed to discuss were the rules of the household that Yunying had married into and how things differed from their smaller sect.

As Elder Lian saw his grandson and his grandson's husband off, he caught sight of one of the scheming brats frowning in Yunying's direction.

That brat could frown all day and stew in envy all he liked, it was still little Yunying who had married a fine man and risen to heights they couldn't even aspire to.

Wang An marital life

I haven't been allowed to lift a hand to do anything since yesterday morning.

I woke up to excruciating pain and my Yue's screams, yesterday.

When I woke up, he was already calling for Mu Qingfang,

Apparently the burns didn't kill me but they still transferred over to the waking world.

Fortunately my throat was fine and I was able to tell Yue to pick me up and carry me to my laboratory and put me into a healing vat.

The vat was full of translucent, green liquid that was normally used for healing potions. This vat and those like it had been made specifically to heal any massive bodily injury like amputation or full body burns.

Even though my burns quickly closed over and healed under the green potion, Yue Qingyuan was still quite obviously traumatized. His eyes were red-rimmed, wild with fear, damp with tears. My poor darling.

I reached up, out of the vat, to try and touch his face, but he caught my hand, kissed my fingertips and then gently put my arm and hand back into the green liquid, telling me not to move.

In addition to healing from the burns, my other task had been to purge myself of the poison while still within the vat.

That didn't take long either, but it must have seemed like an eternity for Yue Qingyuan because he was pale and wan.

When my burns had all peeled off, revealing only smooth new skin, Yue Qingyuan had scooped me up with the greatest care and delicacy. Not letting me move on my own, Yue took me to the bathroom, put me into a tub and bathed me with his own two hands.

Because the new skin was extremely sensitive, I felt exquisite pleasure as Yue Qingyuan gently washed my hair, soaped and rinsed my body clean.

Every time I raised a hand to try to take over and bathe myself he firmly said "NO!" and pushed my hand back down.

The problem with that was, the extreme skin sensitivity had me aroused very quickly. There was literally no way to hide it.

Yue Qingyuan looked like he was torn between laughter and tears while I struggled to hide my arousal.

In a voice that trembled slightly, he told me,"Be good, Jiu, I will take care of that later."

And he did keep his promise, because after he covered... that.. with a towel and had me examined by Mu Qingfang who certified me to have been fully healed, he sent Qingfang out of the room, put the towel to one side and slipped his hand into the water to... relieve me.

I came so hard under his ministrations that I passed out while clinging to him.

Yue Qingyuan hasn't let me out of my rooms since. He hasn't let me handle any work, he hasn't left my side.

He brings me food, feeds me by bringing each portion of food to my mouth with his chopsticks or spoon. He insists on carrying me everywhere. He refuses to let anyone else other than Mu Qingfang into the rooms for daily check ups.

Yue Qingyuan constantly massages medicines into my skin and makes me drink bowls of even more medicine by bringing the bowls to my lips.

When I'm not wrapped up in bandages, he's washing me clean and inspecting me for any signs of scarring. When he's not inspecting me for signs of injuries, he's finding out how sensitive my new skin is, with his mouth and hands, skin on skin.

He is utterly adorable and I haven't the heart to tell him no about anything.

By now, Yue Qingyuan was very, very familiar with his Jiu.

And familiarity in this sense certainly didn't breed contempt.

Instead, it bred sensitivity and pleasure. His Jiu now knew every sensitive part on his body and he knew every single erogenous zone on his Jiu.

By now, Yue's body knew Jiu's hunger well enough to shiver in delight and begin to harden obediently at the glint of lust in Jiu's eyes.

And it was not merely his body that Jiu desired. The fact was, they were in dual cultivation so often that Yue Qingyuan's soul could recognize his lover's soul and feel his lover's own soul caressing him
He thrilled to that constantly loving touch. Yue Qingyuan was constantly drowning in desire, pleasure and such an endless ocean of tender, greedy affection, that he felt warm and elated, intoxicated in every single part.

There was no way to doubt that he was fervently desired, loved and treasured.

"I know my own colors. I will never take yours."

In terms of subjective time, I've died by the guillotine, felt the sharp cut along my neck, seen my own corpse as my head fell down from the block after defending a king that I was willing to serve, because he was a hell of a lot more worthy of my attention than This Man.

I have died in battle, burnt to a crisp from the flames of a dragon, fighting side by side with my friend for the sake of his people.

I have turned to stone slowly, funneling my energy into a spell formation that would keep my people alive that much longer, even while I sat on my throne.

I've been bitten in half or clawed to death by massive beasts.

I've been crushed by falling stones, or died from having been shoved off a cliff and felt my body tear as I landed upon the sharp rocks below.

I've been stabbed, assassinated and poisoned.

I've fought on the battlefields, felt the blood bubble up in my lungs, as my ribs break and tear into my internal organs. I've died miserably from burning out because of poisons or infections.

I've died a hell of a lot of ways, but I never got the chance to die of extreme old age.

And each of those deaths had a purpose. Each of those deaths benefited my people. Each of those deaths bought an advantage for my people, my family, my Guildmates, my friends.

Which is the point, really. They were MY. People. MY. Friends. MY. Brothers and Sisters. MY. Personally coded and crafted subordinates and children. Minions, peons, civilians and all.

They. Were. Mine.

I fought and worked side by side with those Bros of mine. They had my back, I had theirs.

I've raised my children, doted on them, treasured them and been loved and treasured in turn.

I've raised cities, feeling the mana drain of overexertion like blood loss that chilled my bones. I've been intoxicated on an energy high after using energy drain one too many times. I've dug my hands into soft, moist, pungent earth to plant forest cities with Mokuton until the smell of greenery filled the air. I've cooked feasts for my friends from slain beasts and harvested fruits until the scent of rich, savoury meat and wonderfully sweet, ripe fruit drew people in droves.

I've dyed my hands with blood for those people, and not counted the cost even if it was my own.

That Man is not mine. I don't want him.

So if he's trying to erase my attachments by tormenting me and fucking me in turns, making myriad promises and coaxing or threatening me in order to replace those ties with an attachment to him with goddamn Stockholm syndrome or Pavlovian bullshit...

He is shit out of luck.

I've fucked plenty of people before and all of those were far more enjoyable than what That Man did to me.

As for dying in bed, at least when I was assassinated in bed with someone before, the death was a hell of a lot more painless and far quicker.

I know myself. I know what moves me. I know what draws me, what drives me away. I know what I want, what I hate. I know what I value, what I can ignore and what I despise.

The whole 'hide a smile behind your fan' thing that Yue Qingyuan's got going on comes across to me as being coquettish because I associate it with gorgeous french women during the renaissance era and it is a massive turn on.

There's the love that covers for their beloved' s misdeeds and enables them even when enabling them will only let them destroy themselves.

There's loving someone from a distance and never acting on it, because the lover wants the illusion of the object of their affections and not the actual person.

Or there's the love wherein someone is inspired to artistic pursuits by the illusion of the object of their affections, but isn't really in love with the person.

There's the love that starts with being completely enamoured with someone but the moment they act in a different way from what the lover envisions them to be, this love falls apart and the relationship ends.

There is the love full of resentment, wherein someone feels like they have given up their dreams for the object of their affections, which drives them to resent the person they love because of what they regret sacrificing.

There is the love where the lovers cannot stand losing to each other and continually try to one up each other, which oftentimes leads to resentment.

And there is the relationship where one person puts in greater effort than the other, and their lover takes advantage of this without reciprocating, sometimes dissolving the relationship when it is convenient.

I have seen plenty of relationships in my time. I have been in plenty of relationships.

In truth, the greater part of my relationships were Storge and Philia. I loved my bros. I loved the npcs I made with my own two hands who I viewed as my people, my children, and my family. I loved my parents and the rest of my family.

I have been in love before.

For me, loving Auk and Syl was the cosy, comfortable feeling of fitting together perfectly. We knew each other as people. We were friends before falling into a relationship with all the inevitability of sliding down a slippery slope.

The problem was, for Auk and Syl, the eros part of the relationship was not as strong as they would have wanted for a permanent match.

We loved each other, yes.

We did our best to help each other be all that we could be. Syl kept me on the straight road, I did my best to support her dreams. I kept Auk from floating away, Auk kept me feeling warm and safe. We did the best we could to support each other and keep each other from making mistakes. We made compromises where compromises were needed.

The thing was, I was more deeply invested in both relationships.

They eventually had to end the relationship with me because they found people who filled in all their gaps and fit them perfectly, like the other half of their coin. I could never do that. I was the tail to their heads.

I never stopped loving them and they never stopped loving me.

It was just that difference between being a perfect match that fills each other's gaps perfectly and being good for each other but not quite enough.

Now, of course, I am in love with Yue Qingyuan. Yue is everything I could have hoped for.

He is comfort and safety. He is sweet, caring, considerate, loving, warm, gentle and kind. He is everything that is good and perfect in this miserable place I call Special Daoist Hell. I could fill a book by describing how wonderful he is.

If this place was going to be razed like Soddom and Gomorrah, Yue Qingyuan would be one of its few truly righteous men.

I want to dote on Yue Qingyuan all the time, make love to him day and night. I want to massage the stress from his shoulders and back and kiss the tension from his brow. I want to cook him delicious food and put the choice portions in his bowl while snuggling against him. I want to grind his ink as an excuse to lean against him while he is busy with work. I want to pour his tea and drink it from his lips. I love Yue. I treasure Yue.

If I didn't have Yue Qingyuan, I would have been driven mad from this abominable place quite early and then it would have been fire and blood all the way.

If this is how Syl and Auk felt when they found their matches, then it's no wonder that they chose to marry them instead of settling for what we had.

I somehow think that That Man has never had that sort of progression of relationships. He doesn't seem to have ever gone through a puppy love that ended with grace and amiability on both parts, or a casually affectionate, friendly hookup with a lover who wasn't going to deepen the relationship but who would still be his caring friend in the morning.

He's probably had plenty of one night stands given his displayed level of erotic skill but the question would be if he'd had one with a close friend who he could trust or a short term relationship with someone who cared for him as a person.

Of course, I'm just making conjectures based on how strange I think his behavior, towards me, is. For all I know That Man has got a loving family, a doting wife and kids and has just fixated on me for whatever reason.

I don't want to ask because that might encourage him.

Sometimes, I wonder, if I gave That Man the sex he wants, would he fall out of 'love' after he had it?

If he did, it would be great, but if he doesn't, I'll just have dug myself a deeper grave.

I don't need a deeper grave, goddamnit. I dug myself a deep enough grave when I treated him so well as a pomeranian.

We don't share any common morals or opinions. He doesn't even know me as a person.

I don't think he loves me. I think he loves an illusion of me or whoever he thinks I am.

I've done my best to politely and quite a lot of the time, desperately, convey to him that I'm not interested.

I don't want him. I don't want anything to do with him. He enjoys inflicting pain and I don't want it.

And yet he keeps coming back, trying to claim me and keep me for himself.

I once told That Man that his constant assaults were merely going to break me down to the level of being merely a flesh puppet. If he wanted this body so damn much, he could have it as long as I didn't have to be in it at the time. He looked appalled and horrified at the idea for whatever reason.

He vehemently refused. He said I was wrong, and that he loved me.

He said he wanted me, but let's face it. He doesn't even know me so how would he know that it is me that he wants instead of this shell?

The logical answer is that he doesn't. The second logical answer is that he intends to try and mold me into whatever illusion he sees when he looks at me, and I am not willing to be his goddamn blank slate.

Yet when I point this out, he says he loves me as I am and doesn't want me to change. What he wants is for me to love only him, and look at only him and be as close to him as possible, which, let us face it... That is completely anathema to me, given my myriad bonds to my family, friends, people and npcs.

If he wants me to be focused on him and him only 24/7, it is impossible for me to give him what he wants. I've told him this already.

The worst of it is that I can't even stop myself from feeling compassion for him.

It would be so much easier if I could just ignore his emotions, wipe the slate clean and get lost somewhere far, far away from him.

And yet I can't ignore him when he is in pain, and he knows it. Worst of all, he is banking on it in hopes of gaining a foothold in my life.

Jiao Gui of the Du noble demon family had always been considered as an oddity among his own kind.

Most demons did play around with their food, while their food was still alive.

This tended to lead to gory, agonizing, traumatizing deaths for sentient beings such as humans if they were on the menu- which was considered normal for a lot of species in the demon realms.

No, Jiao Gui wasn't considered odd for dissecting all sorts of prey animals while they were still alive, when he was younger.

No, he could find plenty of peers torturing humans animals, spirit beasts, demon beasts and even fellow demons who had humanoid forms. While all humanoid demons counted as his peers, torture as entertainment was not really that unusual in demon society.

Not when demons did whatever they wanted just based on the precept that the strong could do whatever they wanted to the weak.

Jiao Gui on the other hand, experimented constantly with the goal of improving the durability, longevity, powers, skills and abilities of each and every species he came across.

Well, every species that could be of use for him, that is.

All living things were so inefficient! It was incredibly frustrating that no one else saw this but him.

He was considered to be unusual for continuing to capture all sorts of creatures, dissecting them down to the bones because his reasoning for doing so was that he was doing it to see how their bodies worked.

Other demons among his peers did it because it amused them, and some of them did it to make trophies. Catching and tormenting dangerous game.

Jiao Gui did it because he could use every single piece of information he got from a dissection to improve something.

Jiao Gui constantly went around capturing samples. Because samples were important as a reference for later experiments. Such as his favorite, trying to transfer abilities, internal organs, blood and other bodily appendages across species.

Human cultivators were plentiful as samples because they kept attacking demons, And often Jiao Gui caught them while they were attacking him. Animals, spirit beasts and demon beasts were also plentiful for samples. The only reason he harvested less humanoid demons could be boiled down to the fact that they were supposedly his peers.

The problem was, there was always a dissonance between the way he thought and the way they thought and it was infuriating.

At least his specialties kept him well funded.

Part of his money came from his research in making custom-made monsters for other people's sport. Another part of his money came from transferring powers and abilities from one demon or demon beast to another.

He was also known in succeeding years for cutting open pregnant demon beasts to see what the reproductive organs looked like in the stages of pregnancy.

It was an annoyance to him that people kept assuming this was a fetish of his.

Jiao Gui didn't like most people because they don't understand his love of learning how things work inside all living creatures.

Jiao Gui tended to meet a lot of people who were were sadists and took pleasure in tormenting others.

At first he thought,"Aha they were like him! They also also liked learning how things worked!"

Except, no. He was wrong. They just liked tormenting other living creatures.

It was a never ending cycle. He continually hoped to find someone who understood how frustrating it was that sentient living beings were so inefficient, he found someone who was interested in, say, flaying, but he kept finding out that instead of being interested in testing out regeneration, his acquaintances were only interested in the screaming and agony of the victim.

So inefficient! So sloppy!

They weren't learning anything. They weren't improving anything. They were just making a mess!

He didn't like the fact that no one else seemed to share his drive in improving all the living things he came across.

Demons hold grudges, so torturing people they had grudges against was normal.

Demons generally didn't have sexual taboos and indulged however they liked as long as they were the ones in power.

That meant a lot of things were glossed over or ignored or even indulged just because the ones inflicting all the pain were the ones who had the strength to enforce their wants.

Jiao Gui gained an even worse reputation when he took his own acquaintances down and dissected them.

True, he had done it because he was offended, but what kind of reason was, "They aren't learning anything, they're just making a mess!"

This vague rejoinder only made everyone think he was crazy.

He thought he was alone.

And then he caught sight of the Cang Qiong Mountain Sect's advisory and saw Han Zemin, Medicine Peak disciple, who had just captured a demonic cultivator.

Han Zemin who was telling his prey that he was going to benefit all of mankind with the medical knowledge taken from his corpse.

Han Zemin who thought like he did, and wanted to Improve Everything.

Jiao Gui didn't need much time to get rid of all the unnecessary things, burn down his laboratory and pack his bags. He headed for the human world immediately.

Jiao Gui knew he had found his soulmate.

He just had to propose marriage to his soulmate before anyone got there first.

Jiao Gui of the Du family awoke woozily. His skull throbbed dully, as if it were a drum filled with cotton, being energetically pounded on by a thousand tiny squirrel demons.

His body felt lethargic, his limbs felt both weak and tingly. He couldn't even raise a hand.

And he had no idea what kind of poison this was, which... was an excellent question.

"I want this poison. Where in the world did it come from? It's not from the demon realm, I would know. I collect demonic poisons."

Oh, look, his filters were gone and he was saying everything that came into his head.

And he hadn't even tried to open his eyes yet either.

Jiao Gui cracked his eyelids open just the tiniest slits and was consequently blinded by the light.

And also by the brief glimpse of his one true love standing in front of him in white and grey robes but mostly the light.

Which was coming from behind his true love's head, and... not from a window?

No, it was brightly glowing orb plants, huh.

Jiao Gui soldiered on, squinting until his eyes had adjusted.

He noted that he was strapped to a bed even though he didn't need to be, because his limbs were limp as soggy noodles and his body was so sluggish it was a wonder his heart was still beating regularly.

"Are you going to start the experiments now? I don't see any knives." Jiao Gui said as pleasantly as he could manage. This was his one chance to charm Han Zemin. He had to make it count!

He had originally actually intended to break into the Medicine Peak and kidnap Zemin, but he had run into so many interesting new beasts and creatures and plants that he couldn't stop himself from taking samples.

In the end, what should have been a stealth kidnapping mission had become a straightforward break down the walls and proclaim your true love declaration.

"I don't need knives to experiment on you," Zemin adjusted his robes. "Needles are enough for right now. The knives can come later, if you don't satisfy my curiosity enough."

Jiao had stormed Cang Qiong for this man. He had taken apart so many interesting creatures and plants while trying to get close enough to proclaim his love for this man.

It was totally worth it.

Speaking of which... "Where did my samples go?"

"A man after my own heart, I see," Zemin's murmur was filled with wry amusement. "The samples are quite safe in cold storage."

Jiao Gui felt a certain part of him go rock hard at the sound of Zemin's voice and knew from the way Zemin's eyes were filled with mirth, that Zemin had noticed it too.

Zemin, Jiao Gui noted, was now smiling at him. That smile was probably incredibly frightening to anyone else in these circumstances.

Jiao Gui found himself blushing instead.

"You're so perfect."

"And you're very cute." Zemin grinned. "Questions first, my dear research subject. Why did you come to Cang Qiong?"

"Because I've fallen in love with you and wanted to kidnap you, lock you up and kill all the competition until I could find some way to impress you and then make you marry me." Jiao admitted.

"How direct." Zemin noted down, having returned to his calm demeanour. "And how futile. I could have killed you fifteen times over in the first few minutes of your arrival. You had so many openings." Zemin then pointed out some of his weaknesses with clinical detachment.

"....I have never been more aroused in my life." Jiao would have been embarrassed about his unfortunately inappropriate erection... except it should have been expected when his soulmate was capable of picking out his weaknesses so quickly.

Hnnng!!!!

"Are you going to cut off my clothes now?" Jiao asked, cheeks flushed all the way to his pointed ears. He was well aware what he looked like at this moment, helpless, strapped down, completely at his beloved' s mercy and.. "Can I look at the experiment results later?"

"Maybe if you satisfy me properly." Zemin's lips twitched.

Ah, Jiao Gui could tell he was off to a good start!

A high ranking, powerful demon in broad daylight, breaking out of a massive, blood drinking bramble hedge and then, marching, bruised, battered and bleeding to one of the inner desciples from Medicine Peak before he bent on one knee and declared: "I have fallen in love with you at the first glance. You are so strong, vicious and merciless! Please marry me! I will do anything for you!"

That sight was quite memorable, so it was recorded by drones.

Just as the sight of the subsequent events, wherein the Medicine Peak disciple who was the prospective bride tranquilized his husband to be, and dragged his prone form off, while muttering about running experiments was also recorded.

Of course, what happened after that, was left to the imagination.

Interrogating Jiao Gui had uncovered several things. The first was that, apparently the Cang Qiong advisory recordings found their way in a trickle down effect, all the way from sect cultivators to roaming cultivators, to devil or demonic cultivators making their way even into the demon realm. Some disciples from Cang Qiong Mountain Sect's Medicine Peak now had many fans in the Demon Realms.

Jiao Gui was one of those fans, and the only one both powerful enough and deeply enough in love to attempt a full frontal assault on the sect.

Alright, it had originally been intended to be a stealth kidnapping mission but he had gotten distracted by all the interesting creatures that had been trying to kill him on his way into Sect Territory.

Since Jiao Gui had tried to thrash himself free of the binding straps and declared that he would kill anyone else who courted Zemin and anyone who tried to take Zemin away from him, since Jiao Gui had declared Zemin would be married to anyone else over his own cold, dissected corpse... His being fitted with artifact restraints was inevitable.

Jiao Gui himself, unbeknownst to his erstwhile compatriots, was settling in quite well as a sect hostage and uh... medicine corpse. Or guinea pig, as the Qing Jing peak lord put it.

Jiao Gui had been fitted with an artifact that would keep him on Han Zemin's leash. This artifact was integrated into Jiao Gui' s body. It bound him to never cause harm to any members and dependents of the sect, or any of Han Zemin's family members.

Han Zemin had personally talked Jiao Gui through the installation process, logically and concisely explaining how the device worked and what it did to keep Jiao Gui from becoming a problem to the sect.

Jiao Gui had been absolutely delighted, because this was exactly how his soulmate was supposed to act. Plus, he really did get to see the results of the installation and experiments performed on him.

The fact that Zemin jokingly referred to the artifact as their wedding ring only cemented Jiao Gui's unrestrained glee and complete belief that he and Han Zemin were meant for each other in place.

His erstwhile peers had been on edge around him because of his propensity to subjugate and dissect anyone who he felt was a dead weight. They now were overjoyed at the news that he had received his comeuppance in the most ironic way possible... That is to say the man he had proposed to was going to experiment on him until he died.

Given that immortal cultivators did use demon parts to make weapons and medicine or whatever else they could come up with, Jiao's former peers threw a party and celebrated until they keeled over in drunken or intoxicated stupors.
