Xu Bing has always lived a carefree life. After waking from a dream he can't remember, on a whim he began to write about a group of villains living within a locked land of wilderness, trying to escape from their prison. However, one day he was forcefully pulled into his unfinished novel with a single task - kill the leader of this group of villains, Meng ZhongGuang, lest he upset the world order. To this end, he was put into the body of Meng ZhongGuang's older senior brother, Xu XingZhi, whom was greatly adored by Meng ZhongGuang and died falsely accused of murdering his Shifu (whose death was caused by Meng ZhongGuang). Between trying to maintain the facade of Xu XingZhi in front of this group of villains who knew the original well, mustering the courage to kill Meng ZhongGuang, and trying to separate himself from the ever increasing memories of Xu XingZhi's life, Xu Bing tries to survive the desolate, harsh and deadly sealed land. As the days pass however, Xu Bing is left with more questions that sway his original goal: What drove this group, and all the other criminals and traitors that number in the hundreds if not thousands, to foolishly and blindly follow Meng ZhongGuang into betraying their sects and try to steal the heavenly treasures, an act that landed them in this deadly prison? Why do these villains, not behave like the scum they should be? And why would Meng ZhongGuang, who obviously loves Xu XingZhi to the point of obsession, ever plot against and frame Xu XingZhi? --- While I'm only 3/4 way through this novel, I've fallen absolutely in love with it. It's a beautiful tale of love, obession, betrayal, friendship, family and loss. I'm currently at a very gut wrenching part which makes me unable to read in public because it keeps making me cry lol. It's a HE though for the main pairing. It's also full of twists which I wouldn't tag on the main page because that would spoil a lot of revelations. More similar to The Villain's White Lotus Halo than Transmigrating into a Mob Character or I've Lead the Villain Astray. Does have some stereotypical dub-con and non-con (to a minor character) if you're not into that. Barring no restrictions from the translator, do ask away on any spoilers. My chinese is bad though so I may get some minor details wrong.

mild edits This is going to look real weird on a spoilers page, but I actually highly recommend reading the novel without spoiling yourself. Otherwise it's similar to reading a crime novel knowing who the murderer is. There's quite a number of major plot twists which might wreck your enjoyment of the novel, so I'll provide the basic premise first, and let you judge if you want to read this novel. If you want spoilers after that, I'll answer your questions after a while properly, but consider yourself warned. The story alternates between the present day in the sealed wilderness and flashbacks of Xu XingZhi's past that lead up to the present day. A two-parter post due to size. Present Location: The Wilderness. A sealed land without day or night, where all sorts of ferocious beings are locked in. A prison for the group of villains after betraying their sects and attempting to steal the heavenly artifacts. The group is currently looking for the 4 shards that forms the key that will let them out. Main Characters: MC (shou): Xu Bing/Xu XingZhi (XXZ), mostly called XXZ throughout the novel. A free-spirited, cheerful youth. Inhabits the body of XXZ, who died after having been stripped of his cultivation and tossed into the Wilderness. Lost his right hand when he was a child and has a wooden prostheses, which was carried over to XXZ's body. ML (gong): Meng ZhongGuang. The yandere lol. Likes to bind MC up with vines to keep him close while sleeping. Is the highly possessive type who says stuff like "I only want Shixiong to look at me." and "wouldn't it be good if it was only the two of us", but can't bear to have MC be angry with him, or harm him in any way. MC refers to him acting like an obedient puppy very often (also often puts on the waterworks to get his way lol), but he's cold or mostly indifferent to everyone else. De facto leader of this merry bunch of villains. Ensemble: Lu YuJiu: A ghostly cultivator (i.e., a shaman who controls ghosts). Master of Zhou BeiNan after coming across him and saving him from dispersing. While he has a lot of control over Zhou BeiNan, he respects Zhou BeiNan's autonomy. Zhou BeiNan: A ferocious ghost who formed after dying horribly in the Wilderness. He's loud spoken and kind of hot-headed. As Lu YuJiu's most powerful ghost, he doesn't need much power from Lu YuJiu to maintain his presence in the world and thus hangs around like a totally normal intangible person. Zhou Wang: Zhou BeiNan's niece who was born in the Wilderness and thus has never seen the sun. Dual-wields swords that are as big as her. Refers to Qu Chi and Tao Xian as godfather and mother respectively. Qu Chi: (the godfather of Zhou Wang) A powerful cultivator who has the innocent mentality of a 4-5 year-old after being grievously hurt in the Wilderness. Protective of Tao Xian and is essentially inseparable from him. Tao Xian: (the godmother lmao) A mortal without cultivation, he looks after Qu Chi. Has a gentle and caring mien. Pretty inseparable from Qu Chi. Yuan RuZhou: A skeleton girl who is the healer of the group.

Flashback Location: The normal world, which has 4 great righteous sects. Characters: Xu XingZhi: A free-spirited, friendly and cheerful maverick, and of head disciple the FengLing sect. Very confident to the point of being shameless lol (see: chapter 3 - the writing on XXZ's fan). Uses a spiritual fan to fight. Adored by almost everyone and especially doted upon by his perpetually drunk Shifu (head of FengLing sect). Keeps getting into trouble though lol. Extremely close friends (true bros) with the other head disciples, Zhou BeiNan, Qu Chi and Wen XueChen, and calls them by an assortment of nicknames. Dotes upon his two younger junior brothers, Meng ZhongGuang and Jiu ZhiDeng. Zhou BeiNan: Hot-headed son of the YingTianChuan sect's head. Has a amiable rivalry with XXZ and often has friendly quarrels with him (or gets teased to death by XXZ). Uses a spear (I think). Zhou Xian: Younger sister of Zhou BeiNan, and lover of Wen XueChen. Gentle and strong-willed. Qu Chi: Swordsman and head disciple of DanYang sect. Is a very gentle and steady person who beat XXZ at competitions for many years. Wen XueChen: Cool, calm and collected. Head disciple of the QingLiangGu sect, and specialises in seals and arrays. In love with Zhou Xian. Has a heart condition and thus is on a wheelchair. Meng ZhongGuang: ML, and XXZ's junior martial brother in the FengLing sect whom XXZ picked up. Hasn't really gotten anywhere cultivation wise. Very sticky. Jiu ZhiDeng: Junior martial brother of XXZ in the FengLing sect, and vies for XXZ's attention with Meng ZongGuang. While Meng ZhongGuang acts very useless to get XXZ's attention, Jiu ZhiDeng tries to be a good and reliable junior martial brother. Side characters that feature more heavily in the present: FengLing sect: Yuan RuZhou. Junior martial sister of XXZ. DanYang sect: Tao Xian (much later). A mortal. QingLiangGu sect: Lu YuJiu. A junior member.

I'm fond of spoilers even for mysteries. I always read the end of mystery books because then I can see if the author did a good enough job leaving clues throughout the story.
EDITS BECAUSE I UNDERESTIMATED THE NON-CON The novel is not romance focused but still an important part. However, it's not like MXTX's works where the MC/ML gets together at the end - they get together quite early. And then proceed to have a very shameless relationship lmao. Warnings for both main and side characters: Dubious consent, Implied rape/non-consensual elements, Death, Violence, Torture, Gore, Body Horror. I would put it at NC17 and not R, and more for the action and not romance. It's a harsh xianxia world. Spoiler: Some spoilers for comparison to other novels for context Similar to Mo Dao Zu Shi, the four great sects got wiped out. That's the base of all the violence, angst and tragedy. In terms of romance, not much bad stuff happens between ML/MC. Some misunderstandings but they do not greatly affect the plot or their relationship with each other. In fact, the final pairings all have very stable relationships without melodrama between them. It's more of an us against the world situation. Rape happens to a side character, and non-explicit. Does not explore aftermath of the rape. However there are a lot of other dubious/non-consensual events, both physical and mental. If you'd like a list of such events so you can judge if you'd like to continue, please just reply and I'll add to this post so you don't have to dive through the later spoilerific pages. But but I thought ML bound MC with his vines every night and did him (non-con)...... MC wakes up with a sore waist and never knows what happened during the night. There was one scene where MC dreams of the past (this happens a lot) and he felt something going up his legs while he’s speaking to the crowd. He has to maintain a poker face while the vine-something’s crawl up and do unspeakable stuff to him down below... When MC wakes up, he goes ‘wtf was that dream’ and ML looks like the cat that got the cream the next morning.
