Depends, usually in pair there are different roles in combat settings (wuxia, xianxia, xuanhuan, fantasy, PA, zombie). One is support and other one is on attack. That remains mostly in different settings and titles it doesn't even depends on country of origin. As the writer you can guess why it was made. There are fictions where both are on same battlefield with each other where one is not in role of damsel in distress or glass cannon or other. But they are rare cases. And yes, I find scenes where both FMC and FL kill monster together are good and cute in some way. [inner censor cut all vivid gory description how look both FMC and FL after final massacre and killing final boss]Then they embraced each other while kissing and watching sunrise together that is symbol of dawn of new world.
Looks like my future yuri cultivation story is going to have some battles I'm sure that the FMC will definitely fight, but the FL might either join beside her, act as support...or just sit on the side and munch on some snacks while enjoying the show. Who knows~
Seriously though if it's xianxia or xuanhuan novels mostly they both on combat or in adventure and very often FMC stronger than FL. Usually saving her life FL falling or completely opens for FMC and after some time completely overwhelms FMC in term of strength. It's when protector become protected. Of course there yuri harem WNs were all or mostly harem members are on "battlefield". And quite active at that. I don't find this as completely good news. First, it's not yuri, still cute though it's veeeeeery slight subtext (not counting demon lord though). Second, LN is licensed and not only licensed but by Yen Press. That one that rode baka-tsuki mostly to oblivion with DMCA. And LN is mostly the same so it could lead to site strike down. I don't want to lose new Flamm (Do You Think Someone Like You Can Defeat the Demon King?) chapters, even for that case. Especially when LN translation further than WN right now (by about 1.5 LN volumes). ----- There were new series for korean webtoons on dex, but it looks like TL made some teasers than expressed desire to translate.

As I said, I do try not to add stuff like that to my stories, so if I do end up adding any tragedy in the present timeline, it would be unexpected for me too But I will try to add it to the tags if I ever end up including any significantly deep sad parts to the story
It would be kinda funny if something like the story being technically not tragic but at the same time like ultra sad... Hmmm... Maybe not
