Best of luck, if you really arent sure about doing it yourself, many computer stores have an area you can bring it to to have them apply it, but its truly simple just a bit nerve wrecking the first time since it is after all your computer, dont want to mess it up.

this reminds me of when i was helping a friend over the phone with removing his graphics card, i said "press on the lever it might give a bit of resistance but take it gently and do not force it." 2 seconds later i hear a pop and a "FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!"

Pretty much just drop a very little amount on the processor to prevent it flooding out of your processor. I think that simple enough?

Thermal paste is a very high heat conductive paste that is used between two objects (usually a heatsink and a CPU/GPU) to get better heat conduction. It fills in all those microscopic imperfections on the heatsink and CPU/GPU that can trap air in them and cause a loss in the heatsink’s performance. Air is a very poor conductor of heat. Thermal Interface Materials (TIM) can be up to a 100 times greater conductor of heat than air. (stolen from techpowerup)

So basically, it helps keep your CPU cool.

In regards to OP, drop it in the center to make sure of an even spread. Be wary of spillage.
