Discussion TLers should be more appreciated and regarding the recent hate of slow translators

Recently, people have been complaining about "slow release speeds," "slow and bad tlers hogging novels," "tlers are dumb for not grouping up," etc.

I will say right now that you guys don't know how much hard work us tlers put into this.

Even the most sh*ttiest of tls, as long as the tler doesn't just copy from google translate (which I think is not allowed on NU), has to spend hours on each chapter.

You might say, "You guys make thousands on patreon, paypal, and ads, so go do tls faster"

The thing is, we don't. No JP translator makes that much, and only the small minority of CN tlers make that money. We are working for much less than minimum wage, and some make no money (see all the wordpress.com subdomain w/o patreon, donations, or adf.ly and baka tsuki).
Many of us are just students who take up tling as a hobby, and can't tl unless they want to ruin their future.

About the "tlers hogging novels"

It's impossible to hog a novel. You can't.
It's just that people will frown on people taking on a project that someone already is actively translating.
And, complaining on how people hog novels? Does nobody realize that, right now, there is an abundance of raws and not enough translators? Even if that tler didn't hog the novel, it's highly unlikely that somebody would pick it up.

"Group up?"

People lost their originality, people lose the recognition, people lose whatever that they get from solo tling.
Is what some people would say, but the most correct answer for many people is that they really can't.

Most tlers start off with a novel, and go with it until the end (years later). Really, there aren't that many people who group up from the start.
Yes, they still could group up, but that would mean the dropping of a novel.

I will say right now that I am one of the people that would be willing to group up, and I'm sure that @Doomr would be willing to work with someone else on My Pet Is a Holy Maiden.
But, nobody will go up to us and ask to group up.
If someone knows CN, JP, or KR and is reading this, most likely they are already preoccupied with tling their own novel or have rl in the way.

Regarding the hate towards slow tlers:

If you're complaining about it, shut up.
Tlers aren't gods; we have a life to live.
It does nothing but make slow translators, who you really want to tl because you are taking the time to complain, less inclined to translate.

About how being in a company helps tl: (read "if you think QI is good")

If you want sh*tty english, inaccurate translations, and translators who don't give a single fig about their quality, then go ahead, support them.
While you're at it, donate money to google translate, because it seems that it's the perfect companion for you, quick translations and bad english.
That's what you want, right?


tl;dr
TLers do more work for less recognition than you think. Don't hate, for it just makes translations slower.

Edit: if you want to have faster releases, ask the tler nicely instead of insulting them!!

True~

TLs translate novel they like. Why they aren't grouping up or picking me existing translated novel might because they don't like the story. Translating novels they don't like makes them unmotivated to translate it.

But what is bad about translating a long novel even though they can't keep up with it.so better stick to shorter novel.

some of their complaints are valid though, you can't just throw all the arguments under the bus simply because you don't agree with them or because you don't think they appreciate translators enough.


you're right about JP translators not making that much though, most of them don't even make 100 a month, let alone thousands. heck, a lot of them don't even have donation buttons, a far cry from the CN scene where everyone and their mother takes 15-100 per chapter + patreon


no one wants to wait a decade or two for a novel to be finished, this isn't an issue of appreciation, or whether the TL does it for free/in their own free time. it would probably be a lot better if all these damn CN novels didn't have like 1500+ chapters :v

It wouldn't be bad if they could improve google translate though... just being honest. Maybe I won't curse at someone in their native language when I mean to say that the weather is nice or something.

 

As a leecher i agree with this.
Most of what Im reading doesnt go over 1000 so its ok to slowly release than getting forgotten on the novel pick up forum.

Im thankful that I get to read something good due to the fact that my country has a stupid, idiotic and money hogger internet provider thats too slow to even watch anime in 144p. Not to mention data capping.

 

Grouping up killed some novels like konjiki no wordmaster

 

I've already said this, but if the translator is being apparent with their fanbase, they will get alooot more leeway.
Translators like Zen and the one that TL'd Grasping Evil (even slower than Zen, shocking I know) don't get any respect from me.
If you respect your readers at all, you will let them know what's up.

It kills some, and it saves others. There are exceptions, just like in any scenario.

 

for people that hate slow releases, why not just go to LNMTL? i mean, thats where all the others go to when they want a quickie. might ruined your body, but it fast and will make you more or less satisfied.

 

Being frowned upon is more than enough to discourage any tlers from taking up active projects. The white Knights of group owning exclusive translation rights are really annoying and full of vitriol.

 

i dont want to lose interest in the novel completely.. made me avoid MGA, ATG and LLS
