I just got too emotional about the topic. Also, I'm surprised that someone has a mental image of me. :blobxd:
Tbh, I'm more of a sadist than a masochist. :sweating_profusely:
Speaking about memory block. My family always told me about when we go to a mountain or something. I was a small child and stupid as heck. I rode my bike down the mountain when no one was seeing alone without any protection. Although they say that I'm perfectly fine and did not suffer any injury because some kind people at the foot of the mountain managed to catch me, I have none of the experience within my head.

What if I tell you that the protagonist is the exact opposite of what you think? He is certainly not a weak-willed loser character. He just went through too much that it broke his steel mind.

Like the building, a weak hut would not do too much but could collapse easily. However, a strong skyscape, although hard to fall, would do enormous damage upon the impact.

now now, if one likes tragedy novels doesn't mean one needs help

I liked tragedy novels, I specifically like how realistically or dramaticalize the reality about the world and social world being unfair, the romance of overcoming the pain and learning from mistakes.
and you know, sometimes there are moments you need to look something or someone who's having it harder in life than you, be it fictional or realistic to help you getting through your current personal affairs. it sounded twisted, but it actually helps.
also tragedy novel shows both side of the story, how or why the other party did that, or why things concluded like that, why it is justified or not or what circumstances lead a man to do that. it's a storytelling that always put myself on the edge of the seat

and what I really like to find in tragedy is what were both parties found their action justified, but end up with a tragic ramification, and there was no one to blame, it was just life being unfair and THEY JUST FALL DEEP IN DESPAIR, CRYING FOR HELP, WITH THOSE SWEET TEARS DRIPPING ON THEIR CHEEKS DUE TO HOPELESSNESS HAHAHAHAHAHHAHaHahahAHHAH!!! *COUGH* i need help

i don't think i ever experienced any kind of trauma, maybe a tad bit cheeky touch of deppresion.
but i recently watch this video about describing trauma in a movie i know movie is different with novel but maybe this will help you find a certain inspiration. the movie itself not bad.. maybe you should watch it if you have the time.

Character development is pretty important for the most part. Especially if you write about younger characters you will rarely get around one trauma or the other.

My current work has multiple mcs, of which 3 suffer from past traumas. Being born with an eidetic memory sucks if you went trough some bs.

I'll just chart out the younger of the three: Luana.
Luana is a young fox-kin. 16 years old (which is close to adulthood for her species). She looks pretty, but falls short of gorgeous to to her height.
Before her teachers picked her up she was a slave. And that in the most racist and degenerate part of the empire. Beatings occured several times a week. She was treated like a pet by her owners daughter (probably the only semi save haven for her). His wife was especially bad due to some history with another fox-kin in the past. The one she feared by far the most was still the man owning her tho. Needless to say it was outright hell.

When Ophelia and Yarah, two of her future teachers generals, pick her up it takes them a solid week and some of the most advanced healing magic in the empire to undo the accumulated damage. Ophelia (who looks like an elf at that point) notices that something is wrong with Luana fairly early on. Yarah is a grandma at that point but she barely notices anything (As she herself is not an elf).

When she meets Liur for the first time it is pretty ok. They eat dinner together, he shows her her options and gives some advice on what is likely to give the best results. However, when they want to shake hands she flinches back, unable to touch him. Her rational consciousnes tells her he has no ill will towards her. Heck, history (and yes, in his case thats the right word) has shown that he is very much indiffierent towards her race unlike a large part of the empire. But she still subconsciously rejects him. He tells her its alright and that time will most likely fix the issue.

Regardles of this he ponders on how to get this issue out of the world as fast as he can. Runes are better the earlier they are applied, and only he has the ability to actually do so with the ones she needs. Applying them also hurts and he is well aware that doing so any time soon would trigger devastating PTSD attacks.

The next day is a change of plans. Instead of one of the maids showing her around town one of his students will do so. Liliana is a bright young woman. Barely older than Luana, and most importantly a loyal beast-kin. He realized that he needs time, but also a bridge towards her if he wants to fix this mess.

The two hit it off really well and she eventually becomes her best friend. Just according to plan. In her presence she can cope much better with Liur and slowly but surely her PTSD lessens. Eventually she makes more friends, male elves among them. After little more than a year most of her subconscious fear is supressed. Not completely gone, as she learns out painfully a while later.

In this time she also learned advanced magic. And since she is a paragon she is absurdly powerful. When one of her friends pulls a prank on her she nearly kills him with her innate magic. And while he doesn't hold a grudge against her and is fully healed the next week she can't really forgive herself. Liur told her she had to be careful as paragons cast magic more trough instinct than knowledge. Now she knew why.

Eventually Liur gets her out of that shell as well and at this point she greatly depends on him. Just in time for her ascension to the tricky 6th stage of magic, because for what is about to come she needs to unconditionaly trust him.
